Camera damage in handlebar-mounted phones?

No hard evidence except...

A photo from S21 U that spent a lot of time on the bars...

And a photo from S24 U that was always transported in my pocket on the rides :)

I was thinking you could invest in an inexpensive smartphone with a prepaid SIM card but then thought The Solution That Mustn't Be Mentioned would cost money, too :)
Yep, it's gonna cost me a lot no matter what. Just checked: If I keep my old phone for the bike, I pass up an $1100 discount on the new phone. That would almost pay for 2 Wahoo ACEs, so no keeping the old phone.

Ever feel like you've been cornered?

How come you can get such a huge discount on a 2020 phone...
I'll probably never understand America :)

Currently, you can get an S24 U for less than a thousand EUR here.
S25 Ultra is US$1,780 at Samsung Poland including all taxes (converted from PLN).

S25 Ultra is EUR1255 in Germany.
Not sure it has anything to do with America per se, but that's the reality.

Samsung has discontinued the flagship Note line. They point to the S25 Ultra (the only model with stylus) as the successor to my Note20. I want the stylus.

My S24 Ultra has a stylus :) What is the aftermarket gross price for S24 Ultra where you live? It is an extremely successful phone!

To be honest, Samsung has been unable to invent anything better with the S25, and the market rumour has it the S26 could be a disaster.

Jeremy, I edited my post. The price of S25 U in Poland is the official one. We always have the price with the tax included in EU.
Beginning to think that you and Verizon and Samsung and Wahoo are all conspiring together to corner me into a new high-end Verizon Samsung in my jersey and a Wahoo ACE on my bars.

Let it be said that I went down fighting. And we haven't even gotten to how my wife's gonna react.

@Stefan Mikes
I read that the Wahoo ACE doesn't show street names on its maps. Is this true?

How so? It absolutely does! (And the map here is zoomed out!) If you want me to, I will zoom in to the nearest town to show more street names.

A lot of information comes from the time just after the ACE release date. I'm sure the product was greatly underbaked then. After several service software updates, the computer behaves like it should (and I expect even more improvements). For instance, the early ver 3 release presented the e-bike battery level as small icons, which made me infuriated. It is all fixed now.

I'm impressed with the ACE's battery life. In the Auto backlight, the battery feels like it were there for the eternity. However, you need to set the brightness to Auto MAX if you plan riding in the direct sunshine. Then the battery consumption is still slow but noticeable.

Of course the ACE shows street names. It shows POIs, too! (The heart points at Caffè Italiano, and is my own Saved Location).
If you want to see the principal road names, you need to zoom out a little.
The contents of the map is controlled by Layers (see the icon in the bottom left corner of the map).

Music to my ears!

Still married after presenting all this to the missus, so ordering the S25 Ultra tonight and riding down to Cadence Cyclery for the ACE tomorrow. (Same price as Amazon, but I'd rather give them the money.)

A little worried though about new kitchen cabinets coming up again.

Thanks for all your help on this!

Jeremy, I'm sure you will experience some unpleasant glitches on the initial setup (which otherwise should be very easy). If you, for instance, will be met by the device unresponsiveness for long minutes, don't panic :) Long press the main switch to turn the device off and on. I say it because I have gone through it myself and would like to spare you some grievance.

Of course, it all starts by installing the app called just "Wahoo" and registering yourself with Wahoo Sports.

Also, bear in mind you might not get the GPS fix indoors.

P.S. I wonder when you discover how to operate the Bike Bell :) This feature is not really advertised! :D

Thanks! I'll audition the Wahoo bell against my Incredibell XL — best attention-getter I've ever had.

I'm an evidence-based guy. Given that correlation ≠ causation, what's your evidence that your camera issue was really caused by being on a BICYCLE bar?
Hi Jeremy,

I’ve got bupkus really to add to the discussion except that I’ve been concerned about damaging my iPhone 13 mini since I put it on my bars last winter. No sign (yet) of a problem. Whatever the technologies are that the phone uses for motion-sensing, I, too, hope that riding on the bars doesn’t damage them.

I think your experience does point to a problem, at least on your bike, Jeremy. I have no experience with Samsung phones, but have you tried contacting Samsung to confirm/deny the theory?

Anyway, I think it’s very unlikely that you’ll get a true evidence-based response to your theory. Like most things with biking, it might be worth just trying the quad-lock solution.

Dżizaskrajst :) It has been already sorted, Chazmo :) Why should Jeremy jeopardize his new S25 if a better solution has been found?

Agree, but not really my theory, just a high-stakes concern strengthened yesterday by new info dug up by the missus, who got worried about putting her new iPhone on her bars.

Turns out, Apple apparently put out a recent warning against putting iPhone cameras with optical image stabilizers (OISs) on BICYCLE handlebars due to risk of vibration damage.

Will share when I have the official Apple document.

Like most things with biking, it might be worth just trying the quad-lock solution.
Add Apple's new stance to QuadLock's repeated statements that its dampener is NOT for BICYCLES and NOT for bumps in the road, and you have the basis for a rational interim policy:

No phone cameras with OIS or other potentially vibration-sensitive mechanical components inside, and no QuadLock vibration dampeners on BICYCLE handlebars till more info becomes available.

Doesn't apply if you know for a fact that your phone cameras have no such innards.
