I currently ride a bike powered by the Bafang Ultra - 1000 w of power. It's a monster, and it gets my oldish, biggish self up the mountains where I ride - my typical ride days are a slow climb up 10 miles of fire road to the top of one of the Cascade foothills, taking in the view, and then zooming back down. But I look longingly at rigs like a Kenovo and love their true mtb soul - but balk when I think of the total power of the Bosch. I hear that the Bosch motors convert their power ultra efficiently, but I still have concerns that all of the Bosch clones just don't have the beef to get me to the top. So my question is: is comparing these two motors true apples to apples, just looking at numbers? Or is there more to the picture that I am not seeing?
Thanks in advance, all.
I need, however, to ask all participants of this thread to come back on topic.
John wanted to compare his powerful pedal e-motorcycle based on (technically illegal) Bafang motor to "class" e-bikes based on mid-drive 250 W (nominal) motors like Bosch (Shimano, Brose/Specialized, Yamaha/Giant). His concern was whether such e-bike would allow him climbing hills in Cascades via fire-roads.
The definitive answer is YES.
Powerful "monsters" rely on the motor power and a large battery, making them heavy. The "Euro" type of mid-drive e-bikes sold in the North American market are lightweight as for e-bike, are equipped with quite lightweight battery, sport high peak power and offer high torque, allow long range riding, are capable to climb any hill, are reliable and are supported properly by the LBS. Period.
@John Thompson was referring to Specialized Turbo Kenevo. In my opinion, the Kenevo is "too much of e-bike" for the OP's purposes. That's an Enduro e-bike, with main functionality to make downhill rides fast and possibly safe (with some jumps involved). My feeling is John would be well off with a Trail e-MTB from a respected manufacturer. Turbo Levo Comp comes to my mind as the e-MTB Holy Grail, or, the latest Giant Trance X E+ 29 Pro for better value for money. Both e-bikes sport the most powerful motors in the class with proper gearing, offer the geometry appropriate for mountain riding, have excellent brakes, and are fully suspended. Add to it wide, grippy tires.
I think I have answered the OP's question and don't want to say anything more.
