You bought from someone else… now you expect the reseller you didn’t purchase from to support you!

Side note, somewhat related: I was in a relationship with the same person for 31-years. I fixed everything from appliances to cars to the roof. Everything magically worked in her world. Then she filed for divorce. The next week she called a plumber for the first time in her life. And had a major wake up call when she got the bill as to the actual value of what was invisibly done all those years. Am I a dick for laughing now?
Not in my world...

Bike it off Tom
Yup! I do. I continue to help by phone and email. Most deserve my respect and I can offer some help. But there are still to many asshats willing to lie about where they bought their kit and try to place their issue on the back of a small shop. I refer people here everyday. Typically they are not customers, have limited resources but are polite and thankful.

If so then we both are, for similar reasons. Dang this is taking an ugly turn.

Now its my turn I shouldn't do this but I was visiting this random internet place so I could recommend a product to someone and this jumped out and freaking bit me. On-screen branding cropped out to protect the guilty.

Which web page? But remember Doug also introduced the -100mm and 120mm BBS02 kits before the BBSHD appeared. No one bothered with attribution, but Doug has always been more supporter than reseller. I f that makes sense. There were several copycats. Including one that came back and offered to sell his clone from India. Still non of the drama acted out by another nutter. Remnants still exist on enfless_sphere.

Its right on the home page. I was really surprised as its a big invitation. I figured you had nothing to do with it.

And oh yeah I've seen the drama. No shortage of bad behavior on both sides for that blood feud. Seems to have burned itself out? Hope so as it was a cancer in the community. I left E-S FB because of it. The rants were displacing the relevant content and poisoned the place to the point where it wasn't worth keeping around.

Those on this thread are all inside baseball, industry related folks, so check out the 48V water bottles that showed up today. Just to keep it relevant, yes I will provide a one-year warranty to local only customers for my builds with these. These are better batteries that some of the other options we see.

I can't agree at all. Not in the real word. If you run your business properly, your back room should easily make as much profit as your front end. More in many cases. If it doesn't, it's most likely being run incorrectly/inefficiently. Check out the successful shops of about any type.

It's about your mind set. If you're burnt out - take a beak or get out completely. If you own the business, maybe it's time to get somebody to run the retail (people) side for you if you can't afford to give it up. There are people who enjoy working with customers, and are quite skilled at steering a conversation. Those guys are called salesmen (OK, salespeople!). Not all people, including myself (like you, too grumpy), get along with this type person - but they make the company they work for money - or they find themselves looking for work.
I agree - If your attitude is "f*ck off" because somebody who didn't buy from you needs service, then you're not going to last long in any business. Some people buy used, some bought in another state and some are trying to save a buck. You make it sound like if they had bought from you, they'd be getting free service for life, but I'm sure you charge those customers for service, just as you should anyone else who needs service no matter where they bought

I agree again - You need an employee with 'people skills' to deal with the public, so you can devote your time to whatever part of the business you're a specialist in

Can you post some specs on the 48v?
Dimensions?
Capacity?

I’m a a nice guy but that doesn’t buy dinner.
I have an opinion on this topic! I know that it's difficult and overwhelming to run a small business, especially a bike shop. You've got forecasting and ordering, lots of expensive inventory to potentially mark down before it gets outdated, insurance against fires and theft, and the rent for a physical location that has decent parking, as well as employing sales people AND technical mechanic type people. It's a big job... This is why I enjoy visiting shops, calling them out in my videos, and promoting them with the dealer map tool thing.

Anyway, from what I've observed, the challenge of servicing bikes seems best met by charging a lot of money for the work. This pays for your mechanic, cuts down on volume, and can create an incentive to buy new or seek other service providers. You can say things like "we have a $20 assessment fee and you need to bring your bike in, we cannot answer questions over the phone and we are unable to get some parts for bikes that we do not sell". It's easy to offer discounts or favors, but difficult to request more money, so the small up front fee and "in person" requirement to do work will save you time and share the "cost" of repair with the customer by requiring their time and energy as well as a nominal fee for your appraisal. You can charge $50+ per hour of labor plus parts... and if a customer feels that your $200+ derailleur repair and full bike clean plus service is too expensive, they can be the one to feel upset instead of you for being "too nice" and giving your time away and then feeling resentful. I just spent $800 having my Uncle's Haibike fully serviced, new tires, new grips, and Bosch motor tunup. I also spent $500 having my full suspension non-electric bike tuned up ($90 for the clean and tune + $400 for hydraulic brakes and suspension rebuild including parts). Two different shops were used, and I was happy to pay and they were very polite to me. We both win.

Charge the amount of money that will make you happy to spend your time and energy, let the customer choose whether it is worth their money and time to agree. I don't know your specific situation, but I have seen way too many shop owners who want to be appreciated, but aren't charging enough for their time and then get hurt feelings when some customers (who are often struggling) take too much or ask for unreasonable things. This is your opportunity to solve the problem by creating boundaries for yourself. Boundaries are healthy! This is why I am not able to review every ebike, reply to every comment, or do a perfect job with my own work. Good luck @tomjasz and know that you're not the only one feeling monetary inflation, environmental overload, pandemic stress, and overpopulation. Make space for yourself, then continue being nice within that space. Let go of trying to do everything for everyone.

@Gionnirocket, Those batteries are 3.5 inches across, the same as a standard water bottle and are 10.5Ah for 504Wh. They are for builds I have in the que. They are about 11 inches long. The side has stacked bars indicating red or green when you push the blue button. The bottom plate of the holder has access for direct wiring to the inside of the motor without any connectors.

Wellllllll...it's my day I guess....
I make and sell a couple archery related items. One is a light to light up fiber optics in an archery scope.
I have a guy that has broken his 3 times in the last year.

I explain I have made hundreds of these over the last 5 years and have only had two others returned as broken,
I ask if he is slamming it in his case by accident, hitting on something as he hangs his bow between shots?
He goes off on me how fragile there are etc. I should change the design, etc.
Now he bought this over a year, I ask if he wants his money back. He says no, he wants it fixed because when it works he loves it!

So I get the returned light in the mail today, it's clearly snapped off at the metal threads, the threads are all jimmyed up and there is MUD packed in the threads! GEEEZZZ did he stomp it into the ground?
Oh well, I'll fix it and get it back out to him.

I challenge anyone to provide free support simply because the resellers you bought from don’t respond. But YES I support all of our customers. Used motors need free support? Use forums. Learn. If you buy a car from shop A and they don’t respond does another dealer owe you anything? News flash. Google can find many helpful threads.

The thing about Google is that 1) It is customized for users so my Google knows that I am into bikes and eBikes and not kittens and celebrities. 2) Search terms need to be accurate. So someone with a "rim true" issue will search for "tire brakes," because they call a wheel a tire and the brakes are rubbing. They do not know what to ask and how to ask it.

A lady just picked up her bike. She had pulled the electrical wire too hard and then tried to charge it on the bike with the battery ON and with the charger plugged into the wall when she as the final step plugged the charger into the battery. Wrong. It made a spark and blew the controller. With shipping delays I do not have the controller yet. So I installed a new motor for free. She knows everyone in the bike communities in Marin County California, just North of the Golden Gate Bridge. She is very wealthy. At pick up she gave me a nice unexpected tip which almost covered the cost of the new motor.

Yeah... Similar to what I've found.
About 0.5 inches too big for my triangle.

I think the quote from that guy with the repacked transmission was, about the incomparable smoothness. I think I will avoid that search, point made. 🤣

Do not Google it but on EBR search for "There is nothing as smooth as.." And do not add an extra 's' at the end for a laugh.
The thing about great service is that it comes back if done well with dividends. It can be far cheaper than advertising because word of mouth is so highly effective. The guy with the smooth tranny is going to tell all his friends abutt it.
