Wiring up bike light to Bosch system

Trying to figure out if there is a good way to wire up commuter bike lights into Bosch system. I don't like the idea of charging yet another battery (or two) when there is a big one available.

I don't have lights picked out - I found few pointers on this forum. I will be commuting partially on gravel road at night with no street lights so quality light is critical.

Any advice or sharing of experience is appreciated.

Have you checked with Bosch or the maker of your bike? When Haibike started coming out with integrated lights I asked if they would be availble to retro fit my FS RX, they said "yes, eventually".
Marketing will keep them off the market for awhile as they induce the early adopters (me usually) to trade in their bike to get the lights.
But truthfully, with LED lights and good batteries, charging is very very small nuisance. Once every two weeks maybe for my headlight and the taillight goes all summer on a set. Both rechargeables.

@Aleks if your ebike is still under warranty and Bosch doesn't currently have a retrofit for a light system, I'd be cautious about modifying this system and potentially voiding the warranty. Those high lumen Cree style headlights are great for night time riding and like MLB notes, don't require constant charging.

It's pretty simple.
your dealer can activate this lighting function using the Bosch diagnostic software tool.

Here is a video showing you how to do that. All Haibikes can accept light that run off of the main battery.

I just wired up my Cube bike with the Supernova M99 Pure front light and Bausch and Lomb rear light. Everything worked without having a dealer activate the software. The lights are controlled using the Nyon display.I ordered the lights and Bosch cables from Bike-Discount.de installation was straight forward although I had to drop the motor to route the cables through the frame. It was no more difficult than the video in the earlier post.

There is also a way to run the M99 Pro with an adapter. The Riese & Müller Delite Rohloff GX uses it. I was very suprised, but it works well.

Bob - The system update will allow to run a slightly higher output light. You'll need to go into a Bosch dealer to get it. The Supernova M99 Pro requires a custom adapter to run the high beam and the low beam, but the Pure+ should not. I'm not aware of anyone installing the Pro as an aftermarket, but it comes standard on the Riese & Müller Delite Rohloff GX. R&M had an adapter made for this system and I don't believe anyone has one of these. We're working on it though.

Alex, We just dropped off a non-bosch bike to Light and Motion to have them work on providing their lights that have the same cabling as OEM lights. They already have a solution for Bosch systems that integrates with the display controls. They make both front and rear lighting options for the Bosch system. And, their lights are some of the best on the market. I prefer their beam patterns to any other light, but that is a personal preference.

It's technically the same voltage, but it allows you to run more amps. The standard is 6 volts at .5 amps and the update allows for 6 volts at 1.5 amps.

Yes, the update changes the light output to 18W max. Before, you were able to draw 6V, 1A-1.5A but after the update the system can draw 12V, 1.5A which is perfect for Pure+ which requires 12V input.
It's a pretty simple firmware update.



I have been a big fan of the Supernova M99 pro. I used it extensively during my Guinness Record ride. I couldn't imagine riding without that light.
But, I have to tell you something, it produces immense heat @ hi-beam and consumes a lot of power. ~35watts and that's roughly 10% on a Bosch 400Whr powerpack. Unless you have 2 batteries, Pure+ would be the way to go.

The stock light is a Supernova E3 E-Bike V6S Headlight, rated at 6 volts, so when I replace that light with a Supernova M99 Pure+ (rated 12 volts), then I would need to get the software updated. Or can the (software updated) Bosch drive unit be configured to support, one at a time, 6 volts and then user changed to 12 volts?

For Sduro (Yamaha models) the Supernova M99 Pro and Pure + will NOT work. I just installed a M99 Pure onto my Haibike Sduro Fullnine and it works well. The system for powering the light is 6v on the Sduro line.

Does the M99 Pure have two beams? One is the running light always shown in the ads (the two 'c' shaped arrays of leds) and a main beam for nighttime use?

The M99 Pure is 6v which is just right for my Haibike Sduro voltage. It has two modes, the first is for daytime running lights (Think Audi lights) and the second is the actual headlight. No 'high beam' like to Pro. I've written my review of the light here.

That M99 Pure sure is a fabulous light. Modern lights are wonderful. I took a look at that one as in a way I would like to put one on my riding mower. There are times when a good light would be very handy. When I saw the price I changed my mind very quickly !! Way over the top !! LOL
