Will an 8-speed chain work on the CCX 9-speed drive train?

I recently measured my original chain and found it was time for a replacement. I miscounted the number of cogs in the rear and ordered an 8-speed chain. I put the new chain on anyway and everything seems to work well. Is there any reason I shouldn't leave the 8-speeder in place?

I've always heard that N+1 speed chain fits on N speed cassette, the other way around no.

Well, I think I'll let it ride and see what happens. There are no noticeable issues - no chain drops, no concerning noises, no shifting trouble. I know that conventional wisdom says this shouldn't be okay, but I'll just keep an eye on it and see if anything develops.
