no, but I have internet. maybe that was "in the old days" for your old buddy
He wasn't exactly my Buddy, I always default the hands-on doers, of course, anything that works so well on the internet and youtube will always guarantee a novice success.

I'm just sayin' - there are lots of reasons why someone might say what he was doing was difficult - he might have been trying to grow a difficult species or he might have been unable to get good sources or whatever. Corals are not uniformly difficult and individual problems can occur just like with bikes when a person fails or equipment fails or is insufficient in one regard or another.
Anecdotes are like that.

Could have been caused by Mount St Helens for all anyone knows.
St. Helens eruption probably had massive impact on the climate. Mt. Pinatubo eruption caused 2-3° C warming for several years in the subtropics. And meanwhile the fanatics are claiming 1° C is the end of the planet. Here’s what NASA had to say;

Eruption of Mount Pinatubo, Philippines, July 1991

Strong explosive volcanic eruptions, like ones of the Mt. Pinatubo in Philippines in June 1991, inject millions of ton of sulfur dioxide gas at the altitudes of about 15 miles where it interacts with water vapor producing a volcanic aerosol layer that consists of tiny droplets of highly concentrated sulfuric acid.
As a result of the Pinatubo eruption, globally averaged surface temperature decreased by about 0.3 Kelvin (0.3 Celsius) for two years after the eruption and the temperature in the tropical lower stratosphere increased by about 2-3 Kelvin (2-3 Celsius). The tropospheric response over most land areas in the Northern Hemisphere is characterized by summer cooling and winter warming. Credit: U.S. Geological Survey, J.N. Marso, July 1991

Now it probably done more damage to the climate than all Change that People are responsible for... Now add in all the other Natural phenomenon and well I guess we could say it is a natural occurrence that has caused a good portion of Climate Change/ Global warming/ El nino/ El nina and whatever name they will call it next year and so on.

Does anyone take these things into consideration? Or blame humans first and Set policies? Its a wealth distribution setup from the beginning.. Again I am not saying its not happening just saying its not as relevant as everyone thinks.

Looks like that oil & gas loving Supreme Court Justice is stepping down.

Oh my …. that only leaves 6 level headed energy advocates left on the bench. Time to buy more Chevron perhaps.

Corals are not uniformly difficult
Says the Canadian. Lots of coral there and personal experience growing huh? Very small temperature changes have a huge effect. Real researchers have reported this for more than a decade perhaps two or more.

Sadly your coral "anecdotes" are valid research. But I imagine you'll manage to make it a political issue. Regardless of the sources.

In the news today...

Mechanical carbon capture, up and running.

And $1 billion to try and stave off some of the more immediate existential threats to our beloved and beautiful coral reef system (namely farming and development nutrient and soil erosion).

When we lived on Guam, out in the Pacific, in the late 80s, one of my greatest pleasures was diving among the gorgeously beautiful coral reefs with their abundant, equally colorful fish colonies. We visited again a few years ago, and the change was heartbreaking. The areas that were abundantly alive with life and color were bleached underwater wastelands. All of my favorite locations were ruined - and it took less than 25 years to wipe them all out.
My grandpa was from Guam: http://alia.link/2020/04/01/the-spanish-flu-orderly/ I have only been there once, back in 1989...

What a stupid response you gave, Tom. The marbles are obviously going all Joey now.

I was responding to a post that said it was very difficult to keep corals in an aquarium. It isn't, as anyone who has gone to a pet shop probably knows.

Don't know mate, you'd have to ask the plant operators.

Given it's new tech I'm guessing it's prohibitively expensive per ton, and leans heavily on Iceland's abundant geothermal energy, water supply and unique geology.

The only prediction I'll dare to venture is if the process finds a market cost will drop and efficiency will improve. Otherwise, interesting experiment.

What an amazing story! My husband and his family are from Pittsburgh, so most of the locations mentioned by your grandfather are familiar to me 😊.

We loved our time in Guam - the Chamorro culture was so interesting and people were so friendly! We were at a different village with a different fiesta nearly every weekend 😁. I miss Finadene sauce!

Seriously?
Pet shop coral?
Unbelievable at first but then one realizes you're only here to pee on the parade.
Do you know how many coral species exist? Your CA pet shop has a TINY cross-section of the species.

Like plants, there are all sorts of barriers in taking a biological element or plant and moving it to an artificial environment. I grew and collected rare plants for a couple of decades. The same facility had world-class aquarists and marine biologists. Now unlike you and your ilk, I don't claim superior knowledge simply because I know them. But I know enough about culturing various species of plants and coral in an artificial environment. The best display aquarists would never pitch their budget down the tubes trying to display MANY VERY DIFFICULT species of invertebrates in an aquarium.

6000 thousand species.
All easy to grow? TFF!
Old Stevie Wynn bought his way into diverse collections and threw millions at excentric displays. No coral.

Ignorant means lacking knowledge. Stupid means lacking brainpower. While you infer anyone with FACTS that you can't grasp gets called stupid or another inference with the same demeaning tilt.

It's clear you're not stupid, but badly lacking knowledge sure fits. My 9-year-old niece could spend 5 minutes on google and show you how ridiculously ignorant your coral rant is.

I'm the stupid one for not using my head and reading one post when I've missed 95% of your blather and was having fun with thinking adults.

When you read stuff like this do you get so hard thinking you're right that your one brain cell gets deprived of blood?
Your reference states the change lasted 2 years... The 1c° of fanatics is much longer term.
In all cases...what man is doing is still pollution. How can anyone be pro pollution?
I'll update my suggestion for a final flight... Give Pinatubo an offering.
Enjoy the beverage service... 🛩️ 🌋 🔥 🌈

Mt Pinatubo gave us an extraordinarily cool summer and spectacular sunsets for the 91' season.

I didn't go into detail with my acquaintance, I got the impression He was trying to propagate corals ( he didn't say maybe they were pirated{another tragedy) that were from the wild? I didn't even know you get them from Pet shops the semi[local pet shops around here do not seem to have any.
One of the biggest Coral tragedies in fairly recent memory was the destruction of the " Bikini" Atoll in the South Pacific, WTF didn't anyone have an idea these wonderful natural anomalies😔 have a right to exist?

My comment on "Erebus" pertained to the fact that the Antarctic ozone was in large fact attributed to the sulfuric acid emissions from said active volcanic mtn. Now someone correct me if wrong, hasn't the Ozone depletion over Europe decreased since the Ozone saving measures were implemented.?
