There is definitely a place for new bikes. Provided that we do something with the old that is beneficial. Sorry, I have been attacked multiple times by that guy and I feel that it is uncalled for. I shouldn't blow my own cool by acting the same way. You are right. Here is one local project that is doing some good with old bikes by sending them to Africa and setting up sustainable bike shops. I donate weekly. Imagine if having a working bike allowed you to go to the next town to get medicine for your grandmother. Imagine if it let a girl get to school, or meet a better marriage prospect from another town. I like all bikes. The most efficient form of transportation ever invented.

In Tokyo people abandon their old bikes knowing the city will come along and snatch them in a few hours or days if they’re illegally parked. Scrape the registration sticker and just leave it somewheres. Many of them wind up in a city recycle center like the one pictured below for monthly sale at about $65 apiece. 100s show up these days. Others wind up being sold by the truck load to recycling companies who ship them overseas. There’s even a shop that’s dedicated to selling used parts.

OK, he's excited about his bikes - so what?
It‘s the constant poking at builders and anything other than higher end brand name eBikes. A shame really. I find myself taking a break from some posters. BUT When somone gets sucker punched with mean spirited sarcasm and percieved arrogance some find it hard to walk away. Color me guilty. Testosterone!?
Of course you’re right. I also think you may have missed some of the gems pitched...

I’m thinking in HS science, more the 5 decades ago, rating transportation by calories (fuel?) expended and distance traveled put the bike on top. Still true?

Another really well moderated forum with great members breaks into “I like pie” responses. Thus ignoring and not feeding a less than polite post. Snarky gains forum reactions from moderators.

From a 1973 issue of Scientific American, article by S S Wilson. Proving that data visualisation was cool long before the hipsters discovered it. And lemmings shouldn't be used as inspiration for efficient transport design.

There's a bunch of these style graphics online. I haven't looked into the scientific validity of any so take them for what you will, but they make for interesting discussion points.

How long do the eternally frightened imagine that corals have lived on the planet?
I had an acquaintance that raised, grew, coral whatever in an aquarium, it was one of the most difficult things to do in an aquarium, most of the ancient coral reefs in this area are thousands of feet above sea level we use them for roadbeds, lime and agriculture the caveat is they were around when Man wasn't pouring garbage, hydrocarbons, and sewer over everything, the coral reefs are one of the most productive biomes in the ocean, protecting the shoreline and providing homes for divers creatures, most of the coastal fisheries are depleted, don't think so? Ask the hale New Englanders why the cod fisheries are largely gone( you can have all the "Hagfish" you want) mankind is the problem and the solution.
Who sez the ozone levels are back to normal? When I was a little boy( and the Devil called my name) I would never get a sunburn till around the 4th of July, my burn season now runs from Memorial day, till labor day.
You can do the so-called "conservative" bit( ostrich style) all one wants, if you think we haven't mucked things up a bit, get a nice cool drink of parking lot runoff water or maybe munch down on a 'sea cucumber" and top it off with a 'stinkbug or ladybug" tart.
The point is a bleached Coral reef is almost as barren as the deep ocean, these things are problems, we need to fix them and please do not diss this covid tragedy, I have had too many friends dying from this according to some, made up affliction.
I used to work for "good republicans" who thought nothing of burying a barrel of used oil in the ground( No.3 said" oil comes from the ground, we are just returning it) their solution was to bury all problems, it was always a joy to walk the sod planted fields of corn in the spring and smell the accumulated atrazine and paraquat.
I think perhaps Rachel Carson took it a bit too far,.IMHO She was on the right track. So we can keep on fouling our nest in our homeworld, the only world in the Solar system that will support life as we know it or we can be good stewards and care for our Home.( Its not that hard, indulge in a little less greed)

So many people are afflicted with nostalgia. They want to 'put it back' to some past time that in truth really was not that great. Lead gas, segregation and DDT were not nice. I would rather get out front, doing actions that make things incrementally better. Yes I do things like eat beef. But infrequently and only local and free range. It tastes gamey. Unlike beef from a caged animal that has never seen daylight, is force fed, and cannot turnaround.
The big problem with corn feed beef is the corn( Cows are not equipped to deal with these high protein feedstocks) We eat too much meat, OTHO I cannot survive on "Fodder" I admit to being part of the problem( not much longer though)

When I painted it was houses inside and out.. Cabinets, stain, some cars and so on... Try doing that with a n95 mask.. wont work to well..

Just some observation from a skeptic.. Take it for what its worth

Ozone hole was found to be as big as texas at times and so small other times it cant be found..

By international agreement in 1987 (the Montreal Protocol), the use and production of CFCs such as R12 began to be phased out, with automobile manufacturers required to stop using it by the end of the 1994

Parker states that Freon, as discussed by Dr. Ray is an “odorless, tasteless, chemically neutral substance” and is in fact “heavier than air.” This means that according to “the laws of physics” Freon “cannot rise into the atmosphere.” That’s because it is “heavier than air by a minimum of a four-to-one ratio.” Freon, according to Parker isn’t harmful if it is “spilled onto the ground.” He states that it simply becomes “plant food.”

When did Freon patent expire?

In 1978 the United States banned the use of CFCs such as Freon in aerosol cans, the beginning of a long series of regulatory actions against their use. The critical DuPont manufacturing patent for Freon ("Process for Fluorinating Halohydrocarbons", U.S. Patent #3258500) was set to expire in 1979.

The ozone prediction was proved incorrect and modified to a 2%-4% depletion.

So the ozone hole is more intense when there is sunlight over the south pole then where then is darkness (i.e., the austral winter). The size of the hole also changes (in some years it stretches to lower latitudes as the hole size increases).

So what do we know now? As far as ozone depletion is concerned, the thinning of the ozone layer that occurred throughout the 1980s apparently stopped in the early 1990s,

It's the concern that an eroded ozone layer will allow more of the sun's damaging UVB rays to reach the earth that led to the Montreal Protocol. But WMO concedes that no statistically significant long-term trends have been detected

The parallels with global warming are striking. Again we face a real but greatly overhyped environmental problem. In both cases, virtually everything the public has been told that sounds terrifying isn't true -- and what is true isn't particularly terrifying

Now they say the ozone hole has closed... Really? Just in time for the cooling cycle as the cycle continues and we leave the heating cycle.. Perfect timing

I find it interesting that all these Climate guy cry wolf and when it doesnt happen they say " Man we did it, We was able to slow it down or stop it!! See it never happened"..
Dust can rise and I was always under the assumption it was heavier than air, most aircraft are heavier than air as well and some of them seem to get quite high in the atmosphere

From almost all perspectives, nothing is going to look like the last fifty (or even much like the last hundred and fifty) years ever again.

We are already living at one of those historic moments from History class, like the European discovery of the Americas, World War One, or the Moon landing.

This time it's all about population and consumption. Consider that the boomers were both the largest age cohort and the first generation growing up with household electricity. In history.

There were no Radios, TVs, or Internet before them, and few consumer goods available to buy, so there was little advertising, just print, posters, and such.

So for the first time we have a big population with advertising driven consumption habits and every bit of extra consumption requires more oil to both both make whatever is being consumed and drill for more oil.

So yeah, things will have to change, but we don't have to act as blindly as when oil was first found in Pennsylvania and Texas a century or more ago . Things could be much better or much worse in another century , but they'll be very different.
/ end rant
Good aim,AD! I never thought I would reach my current age, time gets away from us(" SMB"time keeps on slipping, slipping into the future") I think its incredulous that the "Jet age" is a bit older than I am, so many ages have occurred during my brief tenure. The only certainty is change, its rather ironic that some 3rd world nations will not have to endure the birth pangs of certain new technologies.

I guess some brave soul will suggest closing the "Greenroom" till then its been a hoot.( I have this urge to recycle soft plastics, the only plastic around here you easily recycle) people used to keep the glass bins full, now they will not even accept glass. As long as scrap prices are up metals seem to have a good turnaround as "PedalUma sez" reuse is very noble.I used to reuse discards to build nice structures and a person can build a nice bike from another persons junk, wait a few months till the stimulus money is gone and the dusty big box bike is discarded, you may find some"diamonds in the rough" especially if you follow "KevCentral".

The big problem with corn feed beef is the corn
Yup acidified the ruminants stomachs supporting E. coli. Making it a ready available treat. And producing a fat better at clogging arteries. Meat is becoming less and less sustainable. Chicken factories are also huge polluters. But a great source of antibiotics to help create resistance to antibiotics. Nuts!

So you guys are done your cross-country joyrides. What's up for next year? It should be even better if prices keep the poor at home.

When people don't know anything, of course. But a rank beginner can do it.
Corals for beginners don’t cost a fortune, are easy to find, colorful, grow fast, and are hardy or tolerant of common new reefer mistakes. These corals are generally considered easy to care for and don’t require a slew of special additives to thrive in your tank.

Ryan put together a list of the top 10 corals for first-timers that we would recommend for any new reef tank owner. Before getting into it, here are a few words of wisdom to keep in mind when shopping for coral.

I probably have missed something - I'm not active in many forums here. I have seen some "poking" on occasion... But, after teaching adult Learners of English as their second (or third, or whatever) language for years, my perspective is different. Very often, it's cultural and language differences that are the root of people's misunderstandings, so I tend to assume that no harm or insult is intended. I'm also a great believer (not always so great a practitioner) in the idea that there's only offense if I choose to take it (sometimes, I do!). I've got no problem with anyone telling someone to knock it off when they've had enough; it's the personal attacks that are an issue for me - some lately have been quite vicious. Ok. Enough said.

When we lived on Guam, out in the Pacific, in the late 80s, one of my greatest pleasures was diving among the gorgeously beautiful coral reefs with their abundant, equally colorful fish colonies. We visited again a few years ago, and the change was heartbreaking. The areas that were abundantly alive with life and color were bleached underwater wastelands. All of my favorite locations were ruined - and it took less than 25 years to wipe them all out.

Chicken factories
There are Chicken Factories. One type is for meat, the other for eggs. Both are wretched. Genetically the factory meat chickens can not stand without breaking their bones after six-weeks. Free range chickens are fun, affectionate and lay eggs that have orange yokes and taste rich. Now antibiotics are in the factory feed.

I keep trying but within hours of unignore, I read another bunch of blather. So back he goes. I guess I'm just weak-willed so ignoring works best. I'm repeating but this thread is fun without D and H especially.

The 25 years in question coincided with an explosive (for an island 40 miles long and less than 10 wide) growth in golf courses and resort facilities to apoeal to tourists, who are a big chunk of their economy (local government and US military were the other foundations). When we lived there, there was one little tourist strip along one street by one bay. When we went back to visit, quite a different Island 😞!

The more I read the responses , the more I see no one reads anything or even looks for the answers.. Kind of disappointing lol..

Record-breaking 2020 ozone hole closes

Several questions asked and rebuttals of Labeling and deflection but no factual rebuttals just name calling.. When I don't have an answer I usually look it up to find out.. Been ready (not listening to tv) about the Covid/illness and treatments both good and bad for 2 years.. Might not have an education like some but obvious the education wouldn't have done me any good as I would respond with my Emotions and tell them how Dumb they are.
Not meant for you Kmccune I am just making an observation .
