Expect change. That is why it is called climate change. Global averages may increase by 2 degrees C. But that says nothing about local averages and extreme events.
Did you know that Tulsa, OK has the same average temperature as San Diego? Tulsa is just more extreme in its highs and lows. The average is the same. San Diego has a more stable climate.

I think we can all agree that this is funny. Very funny.

Meh. A few chuckles, some good points... but kinda 2018, still stuck in pre-pandemic / pre-collapse thinking, a little divisive and smug.

I work at one of the top ten liberal arts colleges in the US. Not a lot of Louis Vuitton, more like kids with anger management problems because they can't stand listening to the free market drivel they hear in their Econ courses, never hear them talk about Kylie-- like Patricia said, they don't suffer fools gladly. And my kids are a pretty broad sample-- jocks, poets, military, pre-med, low income, crazy high income, minority and privileged.

Not wild about pitting generations against each other. I know he's only playing, but still.

Yes. It is entertainment. Funny differences other than between generations are largely off limits these days. Gotta laugh at something.

Idea: What if we pick a place such as Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan and track it over this Winter. Anti-climate science people will bet its weather events this year will be similar to the past. Climate science people will bet that it is significantly more volatile. If the anti-climate science people lose they need to ride torque sensor bikes for one day and document it. If the climate science people loose they need to ride throttle bikes for one day next Spring and show the photos.

What is a river? There is the Herman Hess sense. Then animals such a river otters, salmon, ducks. Rivers require something called water. Without that it is not a river. Water is not wasted in a river and more than oxygen is wasted in the air. Pumping aquifers dry to create unnatural lawn deserts in the deserts is dumb.

Here is the bike I made electric today. No backpack. No ugly wires. No visible connectors. No throttle. White Industries and Paul components. 11-sp.

Just an aside ,River Otters have been reintroduced around here and they have almost destroyed fish stocks and some nut jobs put Muskies in a lower part of our little River(rill) and there is not much in the way of native fish left. Schools of minnows and small fry used to be common, now you are lucky to see 2 "fingerlings". You have to question the results some of the Game Bioligists have come up with, the problem of cougars and Red Wolves is another thing altogether. Sometimes Nature needs to be left alone to find its own balance.

Like the bike.

Search U.S. ground water reserves: (horror show)
I hope the post about water filling a vessel much bigger than our planet was a joke, freshwater( not all potable) is only a small percentage of earths total water most freshwater is locked up in the ice caps and glaciers,Florida is sinking because of aquifer depletion, the western areas that depend on "Fossil water" have to drill deeper and deeper to get water.

If I were mayor of Miami, I´d be looking into gondolas & water taxis as a transit system.

I‘m reading a terrific critique of so-called free markets and other economic truisms. David Graebner’s ‘Bull s*it Jobs’ a smooth read, funny and serious as the Covid that killed him

When they show you it's remarkably hot, it's global warming.
When you show them it's remarkably cold, they say "It's climate change; "Up or down, you see. According to me."

I like bets but I don't like cheaters that are not, at the very least, entertaining.
The first thing to notice here is that you picked what the opposition seemingly must, of course, believe and choose. In your mind, you believe you know. Correct?

I think it would be more fair to say that it's the "climate deniers" who always were pushing "climate variability". It's your side that was against that explanation, Uma.

Here is some history of the struggle to have natural variability recognized. When Phil Jones was trying to recover reputation in the wake of climategate, he made a statement that had Climate Deniers howling in victory when he reluctantly was, after 16 years, corroborating explanation of what their own claims had consistently been based on - natural variability: "We don’t fully understand how to input things like changes in the oceans, and because we don’t fully understand it you could say that natural variability is now working to suppress the warming. We don’t know what natural variability is doing."

Yeah, fair point. I'm a little overprotective of the students, for sure-- and some of that joking about differences does still go on behind closed doors, even in the Civil Rights Department and in my consulting room. What's said in private, what's said in public, and what the media claims is being said are often very different things.

Great idea-- of course, since I have one of each (type of bike) it would be win-win for me!

Definitely a joke!

None so blind as those who refuse to see.
It's a lot easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled. (Mark Twain)
Oh goodie - another addition to my ignore list!
See, the fact that consent can be manufactured and used to fool people so easily was already too much to handle for some here.
Trying to shield oneself from arguments one doesn't like to hear is about the lowest level to which one can sink !
For anyone who is interested in getting smarter rather than shielding oneself like safe spaces students read the book "Propaganda" by Edward Bernays and "Manufacturing Consent" by Noam Chomsky.
