The "750W Motor" is a misnomer

Why do I say that, because we have this restriction in America of 750W Canada is only 500W.
Yet simple electrical math tells us these 750W motors are getting way more juice to them.
V X A = W

So a 48 volt battery with a 25 amp controller can and will push 1200 Watts into the motor, breaking the rule on a regular basis.
So are people winking and nodding as the whole Ebike industry in North America does this ?

Because you are able to feed 1200 watts into a 750w motor does not make it a 1200w motor.....

If it could handle that 1200w in a sustained manner (without cooking) then it would be a 1200w motor, not a 750w.

That's NOT to say there isn't a lot of winking going around....

The issue, to my way of thinking, is that there were a lot of rules written in the dark, without proper research or education - just to have something in place. A lot of people know that, and enforcement of anything e-bike related is a rare occurrence.

Most of us are holding our breath hoping some dumb ##s doesn't do something stupid, forcing their hand to legislate rules with teeth that will affect us all. My thought anyway. FWIW, -Al

No m0re than a 327HP is a misnomer. Any engine can be boosted. My brothers 550 is based on a motor more than 100HP less in stock ratings. What's the point?

Look at the Bafang Ultra it's configurations are 750W, 1600W , 3000W so clearly it can take more than 750W no problem, the only difference the embedded controller, the core motor is exactly the same.
Also somebody was testing a Levo for the actual power wattage and it came out over double it's posted wattage, they slagged the posted rating on it on purpose, just for the European market.
There seems to be a lot of this going on.

Maybe so, but that would be a terrible assumption that you could get away with that on any motor.

And because Bafang is allowing 3000w say, does NOT mean the motor will handle that kind of power in a sustained manner. Not knowing a lot about Bafang, is this 3000w controller from Bafang? Or somebody on the aftermarket? What are the warranty limitations with that controller in place?

No choice but to assume that motor's ability to handle that kind of power on a sustained basis is likely a mistake. Betting there's little or no warranty available.

Your most likely correct about the warranty lol but I have seen Andy Kirby running his ultra full on 4000watts with no motor issues, it's a beast of a motor

I guess it depends on your priorities? I really don't care for the idea there's a real potential to smoke major components on a long hill for instance.

Not when I KNOW I can get the performance I need on a reliable basis, without using anything crazy.

If I were looking for performance like that, the bike I would prefer would very likely have a place to pour gasoline in...... call me old school if you like!
