Strange coating on inner rim on my astral wheel.

I bought this wheel earlier this year it came pre tapped with tubeless tape. it looked ok but not great. had some leakage for awhile but it settled now. well I had a flat when We went to ride the bike it filled up fine but next day it was a little low. so I added sealent as thats usually the issue. but then I found a cut in the side. so I gook the tire off put another one on and all the air would come ut around the stem. tried a couple of stems. so I finally figured it had to be the tape and man was it over. what I thought was tape was this black paint? not sure really the tape as you see had rolled up a bit but it also wasn't to wide enough it did not touch the rim walls. so I took a soft brass brush and scrubbed it got all the dried sealant off and was left with whats in the pic. I thought it was tape at first but you cant feel an edge to it so maybe the tape peeled it off? well reaped it with some good tape and it seems fine now, for a 750.00 wheel it seems pretty lame. I bought a 150 wheel locally and they had dt-swiss tape on it.

That's disappointing for a wheel in that price range. Tubeless tape should fully cover the spoke bed and seal properly from the start. It sounds like the original tape either wasn't applied correctly or was too narrow, which would explain the slow leaks. Hopefully the new tape solves it permanently, but I'd probably let the manufacturer know, as that's not the level of quality I'd expect on a $750 wheel.

foofer, I think the confusion might be that the black is the wheel itself, and the silver coating was on top of that. It seems to me the coating got ripped off when the tape was removed, and that’s what looks weird/crappy. I don’t know what the silver coating was originally for but it does look like the original taping job was pretty shoddy. Was that tape applied by the manuifacturer?

That's disappointing for a wheel in that price range. Tubeless tape should fully cover the spoke bed and seal properly from the start. It sounds like the original tape either wasn't applied correctly or was too narrow, which would explain the slow leaks. Hopefully the new tape solves it permanently, but I'd probably let the manufacturer know, as that's not the level of quality I'd expect on a $750 wheel.

they admitted it was the wrong tape too.
