I love to be around water and boats but alas my destiny is this dry desert. Wet weather gear, what is that? We drive over to CA. now and then and hang around the coast, and once a year down to Puerto Lobos, Mexico to do a little fishing on the Sea of Cortez. Leaving in 3 weeks for Mexico as a matter of fact but won't be taking the bikes for fear of sand and salt. Sunrise off Puerto Lobos:

The 'Up' house in Seattle is looking a little neglected these days. The owner turned down $1 million for her property in 2006 and they were forced to build around her.

A 100 years earlier, Seattle homeowners on Denny Hill had to pay to have their houses lowered when the city decided to make downtown a little flatter.

When they move houses over here they are raising them up ... out of the flood zones.

Oh yes! ...Google the street view or the aerial view of 885 Pacifc street Vancouver. The old house is about 3 feet away from a 39 story high rise. At least it is next to a laneway on the other side.
Good spot for a grand lobby and elevators. Or a fountain and benches.

I haven't seen a grouse in years, maybe decades ago in Ohio.
I don’t see them around my neck of the woods either unless I venture further afield. I have fond memories of my dad who used to take me out on grouse hunting excursions when I was a wee lad. We would take the bounty home where my nana would make soup from the meat and carcasses of the birds.

This one seemed to be smitten with one member of our trio as it attempted to jump onto his shoulder.

Clearly someone has been feeding it. Perhaps another cyclist?
Have you named him?

I had one chase me down the GAP trail in western PA. a few years ago. I guess there was a nest nearby. The little fellow kept pace with me for a quarter mile while pecking at my shoelace!

We used to have many grouse around here but not so much anymore. Maybe they all found their way into nana's soup! :)

I have been running into this herd for a few years since moving here. For a long time they just took off and I could never get a pic of them. They seem to be getting used to me now though and the other day when I came across them they moved off a bit but didn't disappear.

Great shot!

Elk can be a problem in some areas. They pretty much take over the town of Mammoth Springs in Yellowstone NP. When I was there in 2008, they had to close the public library when the animals climbed up on the porch and blocked the entrance. The bulls can be dangerous, especially during the rut. I saw one attack a man crossing the street. Luckily, he managed to get back in his car before the animal reached him.

We have them in Elk County in north central PA. as well. DCNR Park Rangers manage the herd and keep the public at a safe distance.

Amazing animals though.

Estes Park, CO is another town that Elk like to roam around in. There is an Elk reserve north of here that has lots of them that congregate there during hunting season. The big bulls lay out by the road to deter anyone from getting close to the herds further back in the fields and is very popular with camera bugs.

The ones here roam between the dune area as seen here and the forest directly to the south and this pic only represents about half the herd. They will wander through a small town going between environments but don't cause any harm and they are not allowed to be hunted in the area they live in.
