I almost convinced myself not to bring along a can of bear spray on yesterday’s ride along the backroads outside of the townsite of Sundre, AB just to save a bit of weight and space for other gear. I mean what are the odds of a bear encounter on the highway? Was it coincidental that the name of the community where we stopped for a snack break was, in fact, Bearberry?

My wife then reminded me of the incident during our road ride along Hwy 1A between Banff and Lake Louise. Oh yeah… I remember him.

Bears are weird creatures. They mostly seem oblivious to humans when I encounter them. But then you read about someone who gets treated like Leonaro DiCaprio in"The Revenant"

That’s a lot of bear. It was like a Find Waldo, I had to hunt for him in the picture.
I definitely felt safer among other cyclists who were riding by at the same time. Less odds of me getting eaten. ;) Kidding aside, I think that he was simply more interested in munching on the grass along the side of the road.

I agree. Bears simply want to avoid contact and most encounters rarely lead to aggressive behavior. It’s only when we encroach inside their comfort zone or get caught up in a situation such as with a mother bear and cubs an incident is more likely to occur. I likely wouldn’t find myself in any one of those situations but there’s always an outside chance that if I did, I would be somewhat prepared. We also carry an air horn which strikes me as being a better deterrent as the sound it emits is deafening.

OK, this wasn't on a ride, but on a hike/walk near Las Arenas de Cabrales in northern Spain, next to my hiking pole so you can gauge the size:

And here are two videos of it:

Turns out not only is it spectacular as a caterpillar, it grows up into a 4"/99-120mm moth with a skull's image on it, and thus is called a Death's Head Hawkmoth.

Wow. It's only form of transportation leaves a lot to be desired until morphs into a moth? Even then the way a moth flies leaves a lot to be desired. And the Hi-Vis paint job screams "Eat Me " Why is it these creatures cannot catch a break Mr. Darwin? Answer : " Well Steve some creatures appear to exist only as fodder for other creatures " ( Yes I am talking to myself again but my shrink says that is okay as long as I do not interrupt.)

She said it has a skull ( and crossbones. ) Poison? Coincidence?

Not on Camino, yet we keep turning up where the Camino is. That is, we look at maps and say, "OK, let's go here today, there's a trail that starts down this road..." And we get there and it turns out there's a huge parking lot and a church or cathedral built in three digits AD, and big tour buses with lots of little old Spanish men and women on pilgrimage. We have now happened into the three major stops on the Camino de Sanctuarios. Currently in Oviedo, and there are brass scallop shell markers all over the place.
