In theory the grocery getter concept appears to be fairly sound, however the rub is that the bike thieves make it unrealistic to risk your bike in the bike rack at the store. I have a loud alarm, Kryptonite Ulock and thick Kryptonite cable and would still not leave my bike unattended in a bike rack fully locked for more than 3 minutes...

Here in Palm Springs the bike thieves are brazen and stike anytime anywhere and know they will not be prosecuted if caught...

I guess Specialized has noticed the success of Rad Power Bikes in the US. I live in Berkeley, CA, and there are almost as many of these Rad cargo bikes at Prius's and Tesla's.

i was shocked the last time we rode our bikes to a playground in the easy bay, the lawn adjacent looked more like a bike shop than most bike shops do these days! so many orange cargo bikes.

This is for the US market only. I am guessing a 750w hub and maybe a throttle?

You're kind of off on your own with that sentiment. Cargo bikes are in wide use. Just not in most parts of the US (but very much in some. CA Monterey Bay Area is one). Theft rates in the Eu are frightful so thats not why they're there and not so much here. I park mine and lock the hell out of it and its fine. Don't forget a cargo bike is oftentimes a 100 lb bike all by itself without the rider or cargo.

That may be true, but not everyone lives in Palm Springs and many areas aren't nearly so bad.

Personally I'd probably just wheel the thing through the grocery store and use the panniers as my buggy. What are they gonna say?

I've walked my road bike through Walgreens to pick up a prescription before; nobody batted an eye.

definitely looks like a hub drive. i wonder if that’s because of much higher power/torque and the expectation that the weight would create too much strain on the drivetrain with a mid-drive, or some other packing/cost issues.

I think the cost matters here, hence another brand name. However, we will all know when the e-bike has been released and we will know the specs, especially the motor power. Because if that e-bike is to be released in Europe, it will have to be assigned to one of the Euro classes. I know there is at least one Euro class that allows a powerful motor and a throttle but the speed is still limited to 25 km/h.

I feel like Specialized with a Class 1 mid drive and current battery as a cargo bike like above could give Tern a run for their money if they did it right.

And if you worry about crime and shopping, most stores (near me anyway) do free store pickup for orders above $35. Order groceries online, schedule time to pick them up, bike to store at said time, load up, and bike home. No leaving the bike unattended.

I have also done that in Rite Aid when I needed to fill an RX. There were a couple of homeless next to the bike rack so I elected to wheel it in. Nobody said a word. Just felt weird walking my bike into a store...
