Need to choose hub compatible with Civante speed sensor

Hey I realize this an older thread but I have done a mod that will allow any hub to work with the stock magnet set up. I have DT Swiss hubs with 6bolt rotors now. So it’s a fairly easy mod. Let me know if you need the details. Cheers 🍻

I am interested in hearing about the mod to make non Yamaha hubs work with the hub magnet attachment.

I have tested this mod for a few months now without a single problem. Without getting wordy hopefully the pictures will speak for themselves.

The magnet housing is composed of a two piece system that captures the magnet within. One side of the housing is held solidly by a notch in the frame and the other side slides into the centre lock hub nut via the plastic male splines. So the hub side spins while the frame side just sits there.
In a nut shell you are simply modifying the rotor hub nut to slip into your new six bolt hub rotor .

The above stock nut is modified using a die grinder to allow the nut to sit flush against the rotor surface.

Depending on your disc/rotor you may have to grind some of the threads off so the overall diameter of the nut is small enough to slip inside the disc.

Once you have the diameter right ( not critical size as long as it slips in) now check to see if the length of the nut bottoms out or not. You can either observe this by touch or use a set of calipers to measure the thickness of your disc then the length of the bolt. I upgraded to a six bolt 203 Magura disc with DT Swiss 350 Hybrid 6-bolt disc hubs, 32h, black. Boost spacing, HG freehub. With this set up I had to slightly grind the threads and the overall length very slightly.

As you can see the nut is prevented from seating properly because of the six bolt heads. Shown here with the speed magnet c/w housing attached

Here is the modified nut in place with the magnet housing seated properly and working excellent !! No more junky hubs n wheels ! 🤙

Where do you buy the Yamaha parts. I’ve not been able to find any source in the USA, including the corporate offices in Orange County, California. Any help on sourcing genuine Yamaha parts would be greatly appreciated!
 
Hey Leopold parts can be found but it usually means at least 2-3 month wait. I have sourced parts from where ever in the World I could find them. Japan and across the pond. Good luck

I am looking to build a new wheel set for my new Civante. I will need a CLD 12 x 142 hub that is "grooved" on the left side, otherwise the speed sensor will not lock into place etc. (I have already tried to install the sensor an another wheel without the groove and it does not work)

The groove in the end cap only keeps the outer part of the sensor in place, (not rubbing against the magnet holder or against the frame). A hub with a non-grooved cylindrical portion can be modified to function properly, (the cap pulls off).

I had a mishap recently where I ruined the rear rim on my Cross Core. Yamaha is back ordered until at least September and they would not offer any suggestions other than to wait and use the OEM wheel.

I should have a set of DT Swiss CR 1600 Spline wheels on Wednesday. I will bore a collet to hold the cap and machine the groove into it. I will post the result after completion. It’s a fairly simple modification, but it does require a decent lathe and a collet that is bored to hold the flange or the hub.

I will have new rims and spokes laced onto my Yamaha hubs. The rebuilt and upgraded wheels will probably go onto my wife’s Cross Core and her set will become the spares.

Thank you for taking the time to update us on your mishap and new wheels. I got a flat tire yesterday and had to ride my bike for 1 mile on my rims basically so I was worried about what I would do if I bent my rims. I also want to have a spare set of wheels at home now (before I actually need them) for my bike for when the time comes since it’ll prob take 6 months+ to get all the parts to build a new set of wheels. Please post pics of your wheels when you get them on your bike and congrats on figuring this out!!! What a process you must’ve gone through. I think you’re the first guy on here that has actually been able to put on a new non-Yamaha wheel on a Yamaha ebike.

I’m in USA and have seriously tried with Yamaha Corporate in California , and dealer Where I purchased my bike. All to no avail. I need the magnet component, as mine broke. I posted this on my supply line topic as well.

I ended up buying a set of DT Swiss CR 1600 Spline Wheels. The end cap on the brake side had to be modified because there is a groove that is used to locate the outer portion of the speed sensor. The groove is 6.00 mm wide and ends 10.00 mm from the end face. The groove diameter is 19.9 mm.

The CR 1600 has a 130 Kg rating and is also a gravel wheel. A Shimano hub won’t work and there are many wheels that don’t have an end cap that is not already grooved or has wrench flats that would interfere with the groove. The groove didn’t need to be as deep and the one on the Yamaha end cap, (Yamaha’s end cap groove diameter is 17.47 mm).

Everything works as it should. They are nice looking wheels and I have always had good luck with DT Swiss.

Because of the supply issues and being concerned about the vulnerability of the speed sensor, I ordered the parts from PartsPak.com, (a Yamaha outboard motor source). I typed in a search for Yamaha and the part numbers which led me to PartsPak.com. It took a couple weeks, but they arrived this morning. Their site says that they can still get them. If your order them, you will probably have them in about two weeks.

What is that that you used to grind the groove on the new flange? Suggestions/recommendations how we can get it done? Thanks!
 
I used my lathe. The groove width and location are exactly the same as the Yamaha, but I didn’t groove is as deep because the tabs that fit into the groove do not require it to be that deep. I used an “emergency collet” to hold the flange without damaging it. It is a quick and easy job, but it does require a lathe, groove tool and collet. Pretty much any machine shop could dI it easily, (or any friend with a decent lathe).

This is my lathe with the bored “emergence collet”.
