my kiox upgrade review.

I had wanted to get the smartphone hub but that was delayed from mid feb and is still not out. I thought about the old nyon and getting a intuvia installed but I waited. well the Kiox came out and this bike is my commuter and i don't need gps navigation for the post part so I got it. its 275.00 and what it costs to install it. but they have to drop the motor and run new wires for it. my bulls has super tight wire tubing and they had to tear the bike apart to do it. some issue happened and with the pandemic things are slow. so it took a bit over a week they found a faulty battery wire that would be fixed under warranty.
so its easy to connect the kiox to the e bike app and navigation through the kiox menus are not bad. but I have had a lot of practice with my garmin Plus it lets you adjust wheel size and I am tweaking it till I get the same average as my garmin.
you can adjust what each screen shows. I have my main one that shows speed heart rate wattage and cadence. the only other thing I like is the grade but that's a whole other thing. it is easy to read and easy to operate.
But is it worth the money? really the only thing it gives you over a garmin is wattage. but it does show you more at once battery % lights mode and your choice of screens. so its better then the intuvia. but for the cost the garmin will show you more info and will do more. Plus it only syncs with your phone once in awhile. I don't know what causes it to sync but it is not every ride maybe every 4 rides? the app does not sync with apple health or strava or much of anything. only komoot and that's more for maps. sometimes it does not record the gps data and sometimes it does. it does not seem to get any altitude data either.
I would say inf you want to see how much power your putting out I would not recommend it and go with a good GPS. it cost me about 450.00 to buy it and have it installed. you may need a new stem depending on the angle. my bike came with an adjustable stem and that had to go.
the app needs to sync to other apps and more then cone in awhile. I ride from 2 to 6 times a day.

I have dual batterries and the Puran. I would like a decent battery meter which also shows the different batteries . I now have to use miles to empty as a battery gauge which works but not very detailed info. also watts used woud be good , hard to justify an additional 380 installed (My shops estimate) on a bike for this summer‘s use mainly while waiting for my WattWagon after spending for the bike, 2 additional batteries and a 2nd charger. still thinking about it. Also the display kit is back ordered I was told.

ya I don't know if it shows two batteries or not. but I thought they drained evenly? I was hoping I could replace my garmin so it would record the ride put the info towards my daily extersize without the hassle of pausing saving and turning off the garmin each time. but nope. it took them over 2 hours to get the wire ran because the bulls design. I like it but it is not really worth the cost. of the software improves that will go a long way. it only uses bluetooth for heart rate and that's limiting ant+ would open up options. but since you don't really need anything external but heart rate.

@fooferdoggie and @opimax ,

I think you guys are missing the salient feature of Kiox.

My # 1 reason to get Kiox would be to enable the lock feature. Once you remove the display, it would completely remove any motor assistance and render the electric aspect of the bike useless.
This alone is worth the upgrade in my opinion, especially if you live in the city or travel often to densely populated areas.

There are other points:
  • Navigation via Komoot
  • Nicer color display that is visible even in day light
  • Accurate % of the battery
  • Shows your power input vs motor's contribution
  • Connects to Bluetooth enabled heart rate monitors

the lock would not stop the thief it would just make the bike useless to them so they may just trash it or strip it. . I have not checked that out yet. the % on the battery is nice but now that I have been riding so much the miles work out but it is better. but now that I can use less assist I don't need it. on the tandem it would be good. I daid abotuthe bluetooth but ant+ would have given a larger range of things. but I nevewr had a issue reading the intuvia or purion though I like the kiox screen a lot better. but it is a lot of money for it.

Accurate battery and power input only things that interest me but not worth the money at this point to me

I think the Kiox also gives access to custom ride settings like the Nyon?

For me, swapping in a Nyon 1 would be my easy upgrade path from Intuvia, if only they were readily available at a reasonable price.

Thanks for the Kiox review - it's hard to track the difference between the various Bosch solutions since there is so much overlap in their feature sets

custom like in what? you can change the wheel size but you can do that on the intuvia too. you can't change assist levels or anything like that. you can change the screesn. Ya I wanted to go with the nyon but my shop knew I wanted to upgrade to a smartphone hub. so asking for a intuvia so I could use a nyon would be problematic. Plus without support it may cause issues.

I see that it tracks average user power. Does it track instantaneous user power and also the power generated by the motor? Thanks.
yes the bottom left on my pic is watts. it also has a chart of heart rate cadance power and speed. also this screen. but these only happen after the unit syncs.

Yes, it does.
See picture below.
The snail shaped semi circle around the number "19.9" shows two different colors of blue. Dark blue is instantaneous machine power and the light blue is your power.

I like kiox, the size imo is good not too big not too small, it gives your most of the information you need. If a bike comes with kiox I would prefer that.

That being said, the given price for retrofitting a kiox is ridiculous. As hardware this is much less capable than a $50 smartphone. All the features you see here can easily be had by a simple smartphone app, including lock, plus you would have gps, if Bosch gave the option to connect to your smartphone via bluetooth.

I have had a weird thing going on. it connected to my garmin HRM fine and worked. but I dont like wearing it so I got a garmin watch that transmits bluetooth heart rate. with it connects and shows its connected but shows 0 heart beat.

They already do. It is upto the company to chose which display to choose. It is called the Smartphone hub and works with COBI app.
It turns your phone into a very capable display.

This site might be of some help:

one possibility might be the watch is connected via Bluetooth but is broadcasting HR data via ANT, and needs to be set to broadcast HR via BT.

it is brodcasting bluetooth. it needed a update to do it. both are connected and the kiox shows it is connected to the watch and the heart rate icon is there. when I took off my garmin Harm (it worked fine) and tried putting the watch on (it did not work because it needed the update) I tried the garmin harm again it would show connected but the same 0 heart rate. if it is not connected it shows a dash.

ok I bought one of the recommended heart rate monitors and it works fine so if you want to use a bluetooth hrm use on that is supported.
Polar H7
◦ Polar H10 Heart Rate Sensor
◦ Runtastic Heart Rate Combo Monitor
◦ Wahoo TICKR Heart Rate Monitor
◦ BerryKing Heartbeat chest strap
◦ BerryKing Sportbeat arm strap

Thanks for this much needed review. Rather than pay 20% re-stocking fee to swap my Allant +7 to Allant +8, I decided to get accessories.
Although I ordered a Kiox, I was am still confused over SmartphoneHub versus Kiox. Pros And Cons of each?
I also got Bontrager Ion Pro light and a thudbuster.
