Lugging a Motor, Why it's Bad

Yes, it is niche. Custom colors are available, its what she wants that counts. It will be a one of a kind in North America. Not like a Walmart or Mike's Bikes bike. And better than anything Taylor Swift, Buoyance, or Michelle Obama has access to ride in the Vineyard this Summer.

Maybe the cheap aluminum got bent in shipping, I don't know but it wasn't going on the bike, it was not a narrow/wide chainring but many teeth differed from each other. Actually it was comical but what does one expect for 6 bucks, it might have been LESS, I don't remember. I see the wolf tooth chainrings are like 70-80 dollars. I know spending more doesn't always mean better quality but in this case, I hope that's true, I may order one
The Wolf should be fine as long as it fits as I've yet to hear a negative comment. Everyone seems to be very happy with them
Did you ever get an answer on using the Bafang Fat Bike 48t with the standard spider?

Awesome bike and aptly named... and don't think I didn't day dream about that for a moment myself. But reality is that I would never use that bike these days to it's potential so I went more suited to my actual riding. Good to hear that it's programmed better than the standard CANbus motors as there's been more than a few complaints on here and some have even gone through the process of converting to UART.
That said I do love the personal customization of the UART motors. You can tweak power output/acceleration curve as you desire and each PAS does exactly what I want. I ride mostly for exercise so trimming it's stock aggressive delivery in lower PAS makes for a much more natural feel. But you still have the power when you want/need... so there's no downside.
I’ve been tempted to buy a UART motor whilst there still available for a future project bike. Would love play around with the tune to see what can be achieved with the programmable motor.

I find it desirable as I'm often looking for minimal assistance and a natural feel.
That said on my way home today it started to drizzle and I rode that bitch home in higher PAS averaging >25mph even on hills and it was such a blast.
These motors seem to have unlimited power and just want to run.

Yep, I found I was riding my old Haibike with 250 watt Yamaha motor less and less. Actually I had expected more assist from the get go with that bike so it was always a disappointment. With the Ultra motor, life is good, no life is GREAT

Well it happened again. I tell people to downshift in anticipation of slowing, to pedal lightly and quickly, like swimming with fins. Then they don't downshift, lug the motor in high gear at low speeds while clodhopping side to side. Then they destroy their drivetrains and motors. If you took your brother-in-law's manual shift Corvette and left it in high gear when launching from stops, you will kill his nice motor and transmission. Please be kind to your bike. It is your pet and your good friend. Also, the highest power level, like with a Corvette, is reserved for very short bursts. In a few moments I need to tell a guy that he killed his motor and how and why. Then I have another this afternoon at a house call to a cargo mom who forgets to downshift.
I'm about to pick up a discounted Yamaha mid drive. My question: if the motor assist is set to "OFF", will starting out in high gear still lug the motor?

Not that I want to start out in high, but smelly brown stuff occasionally happens. Just wondering if turning off the assist is an alternative to dismounting and shifting while lifting the rear tire.

It can't lug the motor if the motor is off. It will lug the drivetrain though
Good to know! Motor is the expensive part I don't want to take chances with. Just thinking of those times I've had to suddenly and unexpectedly stop. Motor off is quick and easy, just press the button a time or three.

My ebike has the bafang ultra motor and if I stop in 9th gear and then try to take off in that gear, the bike will wheelie and it's mr. toad's wild ride. It's not any better using throttle. Similarly, if I MUST stop in a high gear, I turn the motor off to start out again but pedaling with no motor assist in 9th is brutal, can't be done on an incline.

Non issue with my finely tuned Ultra... not to mention shift at any time Rohloff.
Yes I'm being a _ _ _ _ 🙃

Exactly... as I'm using a disk with a Rohloff

I wish I could tune my ultra but it's canbus so no can do.. I can't afford rohloff unless my wife goes back to work.. Hmmm, not a bad idea!

I've learned to anticipate really well and where I ride has little traffic so it's rare for me to be caught at a dead stop in a high gear. It does happen though and the 1st time when I just said "oh well" and started off in that high gear on high assist? Well, it would have got a lot of youtube views.

I have another luger. He has not shifted his bike in three years. And it has always been in high gear, so all the pressure is on the fewest number of teeth of any cog. The chain measures as fine. It is just the smallest cog that is worn. It is funny that yesterday coincidently I met him and his wife at breakfast in the next town. We rode back together and I showed them how to pedal and shift.
