Looking for a solution for lost key

I'm 1600 miles from home and I managed to loose the key to my Lectric Step Thru.

I have the spare at home, but that does me no good.

Has anyone ever been in a similar situation? How did you resolve it? Can a locksmith help?

Post a photo of the serial number of the bike. We can help that way.

Most likely a locksmith can help, the lock doesn't look like it is that sophisticated. Just call one and see what they say.

my understanding is that the key is made from a Honda Motorcycle key blank, an HD75 also known as an X138 Key. What i do not know is if the key actually needs to be cut or not. I don’t habe my XP yet but i’d be surprised if every battery was keyed differently….

so you might first try getting a honda blank per above and trying that. let us know if that works or not. wish i could validate for ya but i’m months away from taking delivery. haha.

We would really like to see photos of the bike so we can help. What is the serial number? Show a photo of that.

On the Facebook Lectric XP forum, they say this.
"There are 2 key blanks that can be used. The key blank numbers are a Honda key # HD75 or the Toyota key # TR33"

That will make life a lot simpler for your locksmith if he knows the blank. He can cut a new key in a few minutes. I've seen it done for my car. They stick in the blank, wiggle it, and cut away the areas where it gets marked.

Uh....how do they know how much to cut away by just looking at where it gets marked? CN

Cant speak about an Electric step thru brand but I own twoPedago and one specialized Vado and I can open all three without the key. I just put in any key in and jiggle it a bit until the key turns. Pedago only uses one key for all ebikes not sure about specialized.

The marks tell him where the tumbler pins touched. HE didn't file it all at once. Started with one pin and worked down. I sat in the passenger seat and watched as he explained.

I had this Toyota Echo a few years ago. One time late at night at the casino parking lot, I unlocked the door to my car, sat in and about to turn the key in the ignition when I realized something looked different in the car. I had gotten into someone else's car that is same make and color. I could have driven it away without realizing it.

Just a reminder this is a great reason to buy Bicycle insurance, it cost as low as 100 dollars a year. They will replace your bike if it is stolen or damaged. Also, they have Roadside assistance and will give you and your bike a ride home if you have this or any type of trouble when away from your home on your bike.

I am not a dealer for the insurance but I do recommend it: https://www.markelinsurance.com/bicycle

have you or anyone you know had to make a claim against insurance for loss and how was that handled? insurance industry is not the most trusted industry usually. so i am always skeptical of these types of business models…

My home insurance covers ebikes... but... only if the bike is rated 500W or less, and go no faster than 32 km/h (20 mph). Which means Lectric XP, and our Aventon Pace 500 is out of luck most likely. Got to read those fine prints!

Yeah, but like i said, i don’t trust what they say, more interested in direct experiences. difficukty in getting claims covered, do they cancel you if you make a claim, conditions which they’d not cover a claim, etc. they are not going to give straight answers to those questions as it would hurt their ability to sell me their policy.

Lectric told us every bike is keyed uniquely. My daughter thought she lost her keys. I ordered blanks from Lectric then she found her keys. Lectric said without original key you need a key blank and locksmith to cut a new key.

interesting, seems different from other bike manuf who use the same key for all bikes. good to know. may make several replacements before i ride so i have more than one spare. also kind of a pain if you have more than one bike that the same key won’t work in both.

So, my $45 chain lock has a serial number in case I'd ever lose the key. But, my $300 battery doesn't. Why?

I've heard some disappointing stories about the "theft replacement guarantees" provided with some of the more expensive locks. Rather than get the cost of the bike back, they got just a pittance and had to provide lots of documents (which would be expected) to even get that.

Anyway, hope Joyrider is riding again
