Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

A decade or so ago, a nearby town was plagued with kids riding ATV's on the street. Laws were passed but mostly ignored. The fix was to impound these $7K+ ATV's until a hefty fine was paid. They were held at the impound yard for 12 months and if unclaimed in that time, they were auctioned off. It was surprising just how many of these expensive machines were never claimed. The town put the proceeds into more enforcement and after 2 years, the problem went away.
So you see.... it can be done. 👍

This is insane. Over here in the US, New Jersey just banned e-bikes from almost all bike trails and are now treating all classes of e-bike as motorcycles. Knee-jerk reaction and nanny state out of control. I sure hope this doesn't spread to other states. I will be beyond livid.

I don't know about New Jersey, and they aren't doing that in Tennessee, but it seems like that's what happens when there's no enforcement mechanism in place. They pass another law. I get the irony. Aside from educated common sense, enforcement is the only real solution. Speed limits or bans are pissing in the wind if no one enforces anything. Who's gonna pay for cops on every MUP and greenway?

Do we have green goals? There are floods and fires and hurricanes with record weather every week. We face unprecedented Record weather/climate instability extremes every week due to fossil fuel codependence leading to global warming. If people can take a kid to a local school on an low impact, totally clean bike, that is somewhat assisted, isn't that a really good thing to be encouraged? Cargo moms are the best! I am not personally a throttle person, but maybe a mom facing a red light who wants to get a little boost when it turns green with two kids on the back, and wants some help safely clear an intersection; is that not good? We are talking about assisted bicycles with usable pedals, and not unlawfully pegged overpowered motorcycles that happen to be electric. It is about moms and normal commuters like me who are doing everything right for our nation's well-being and for our planet. Would one really rather have monster SUVs and Trucks around town with tonnage destroying streets, clogging traffic? If the Dutch can do it, so can we. It is called green micro-mobility. Electrically assisted bikes are good. The problems are caused by cars and motorcycles, regardless of their power source. Be free and ride an assisted bike for 90% of errands around town. Paving costs, gridlock, and parking are all solved for cities saving many millions on town budgets. The gradeschool kids love it. I know one kid who when the parents tried to get him in his car seat ran away, climbed on the cargo bike and wouldn't budge.

Government overreach and tyranny.

Taking someone's legally purchased and owned property and destroying it because they were riding recklessly is a bridge too far.
I've seen governments do this with cars too.
What if they submerge it in water overnight and then give it back to you in the morning? 🙃

Sea water.
Warnings in these situations just don't work. No one has the right to harass or endanger others. It's not rampant in my area but I have witnessed juveniles speeding +35mph on MUPS and purposely cutting close to everyone they pass... mostly on scooters.
Confiscating the offending vehicle has proven effective but I do believe it should be tied to reckless behavior.

For about six-months there was a guy doing 40 on a scooter with a helmet that had an acid green Mohawk attached. He had large 2" black rocks in his earlobes with an extra smoke cloud vape. Couldn't miss him. Then he disappeared. It is like a self-weeding garden!

When I say "throw them in the slammer", I mean lock them up until Mom and Dad come pick them up. That's what happened in my day. Maybe that's too harsh for today, I don't know.
The problem there is that in 2026 "the slammer" is a freaking dangerous place, especially for most teenagers. I've heard multiple accounts of kids being thrown into adult jail and being sexually assaulted, not always by inmates. I think riding an unrestricted e-bike is bad, but the rape is an inappropriate punishment.

For temporary holding, I like house arrest with ankle bracelet and absolutely no phone access. Even for one night, to drive home what they're flirting with.

The ones who actually cause death, bodily injury, or serious property damage, or with repeated offenses, will need a much more memorable experience. Maybe in some kind of halfway house?

In most states, Juvies have to be separated from adults. I'm talking about minutes to a few hours until Mom and Dad can pick them up. The local police station, not a SuperMax.

You'd be horrified how often that gets honored only in the breach.

They will claim "lack of resources" or "bureaucratic error" when they put the 16-year-old who mouthed off at them in a room full of hardened criminals. Yes, it happens. And it is more likely if they perceive that the kid's family doesn't have the resources or the knowledge to fight back.

good boy[ teach a child the ways of the Lord when young and they will never depart from it](or something like that) was watching a you tube show( about the monetary system) and it was amazing the the trim and well dressed people back in the day, now a lot of the woman and men defile their bodies and dress in tatters, not to mention the Walmart "walrus" syndrome.while the vehicles become gargantuan fuel hogs, that wont go 10 k miles without fortune costing repairs[to white,to whit! while "greasy Joan" doth keel the pot] or something like that( gotta the "mage" from"Stratford on Avon" in other words the "cuckoos will get you if you don't watch out!" thanks Annie. "hell" for leather into the next extinction event we go,flipping birds and living in the "cyber illusion",remember the Bible quip about the 'Prince of the power of the air"? dear reader "caveat emptor!".

Very profound, except "The Lord" is often the father in the eyes of these kids, and he's the one who bought the kid the Surron in the first place.

it’s not “tyranny” to enforce the rules. i’m pretty sure most governments which build roads on public property for the public to use will impound motor vehicles which are repeatedly used illegally on said public roads. it seems like some people want no restrictions on the bikes themselves and then no real enforcement when the bikes are ridden recklessly. and that’s exactly why we’re now starting to see overreach in new laws like in new jersey. who’da thunk.

tyranny is arbitrary, extreme, oppressive behavior regardless of the law - not a rational enforcement of the law.
