Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

A decade or so ago, a nearby town was plagued with kids riding ATV's on the street. Laws were passed but mostly ignored. The fix was to impound these $7K+ ATV's until a hefty fine was paid. They were held at the impound yard for 12 months and if unclaimed in that time, they were auctioned off. It was surprising just how many of these expensive machines were never claimed. The town put the proceeds into more enforcement and after 2 years, the problem went away.
So you see.... it can be done. 👍

This is insane. Over here in the US, New Jersey just banned e-bikes from almost all bike trails and are now treating all classes of e-bike as motorcycles. Knee-jerk reaction and nanny state out of control. I sure hope this doesn't spread to other states. I will be beyond livid.

I don't know about New Jersey, and they aren't doing that in Tennessee, but it seems like that's what happens when there's no enforcement mechanism in place. They pass another law. I get the irony. Aside from educated common sense, enforcement is the only real solution. Speed limits or bans are pissing in the wind if no one enforces anything. Who's gonna pay for cops on every MUP and greenway?

Do we have green goals? There are floods and fires and hurricanes with record weather every week. We face unprecedented Record weather/climate instability extremes every week due to fossil fuel codependence leading to global warming. If people can take a kid to a local school on an low impact, totally clean bike, that is somewhat assisted, isn't that a really good thing to be encouraged? Cargo moms are the best! I am not personally a throttle person, but maybe a mom facing a red light who wants to get a little boost when it turns green with two kids on the back, and wants some help safely clear an intersection; is that not good? We are talking about assisted bicycles with usable pedals, and not unlawfully pegged overpowered motorcycles that happen to be electric. It is about moms and normal commuters like me who are doing everything right for our nation's well-being and for our planet. Would one really rather have monster SUVs and Trucks around town with tonnage destroying streets, clogging traffic? If the Dutch can do it, so can we. It is called green micro-mobility. Electrically assisted bikes are good. The problems are caused by cars and motorcycles, regardless of their power source. Be free and ride an assisted bike for 90% of errands around town. Paving costs, gridlock, and parking are all solved for cities saving many millions on town budgets. The gradeschool kids love it. I know one kid who when the parents tried to get him in his car seat ran away, climbed on the cargo bike and wouldn't budge.
