I can’t explain it, but removing the rear wheel, reinstalling it fully engaged in the dropouts, confirming that the wheel was aligned with the frame, made it noticeably quieter. The only revision was leaving the flat retaining washer disconnected from the Allen bolt on the nondrive side so that it would not force the axle out of position.
