How many miles do you have on your Brose system?

Hi,

I have 1200+ miles on my iZip Moda that I bought in November of 2018. I love it so far, but a friend had a failure with his iZip Moda at 900 miles. He thinks the belt is slipping (it only works in low power mode and if he doesn't put a lot of torque in the pedals any more and you hear the system slipping).

I have been searching and can't find how reliable or long lasting a Brose system is.

My other e-bike is a Diamondback Lindau (same as a iZip or Raleigh with other names) and it has over 4000 miles and works as well as the day that I bought it.

p.s. Looking forward to people posting that they have thousands of miles and are happy. So far, I LOVE the Brose system and think it is quite superior to other drive systems.
 
I have about 4000 miles on a Bulls Evo 27.5+ and 1700 miles on my iZip Moda. Both are running perfectly. The Bulls has a little bearing play in the motor but not enough to cause any noise or issues. I also have a Juiced CCX with about 1800 miles on it.

Seems like you can find many instances of people having issue with the Brose (most seem to be belt related). I do love the belt for the low noise.

That being said, I like the Brose motor the best (which is why I have 2). The pedal feel is telepathic and the silence is perfect for me. Brose allows manufacturers to use their own battery designs which allows for bigger batteries (like a 650wh on the bulls which is AWESOME). Could be an issue down the road as your now tied to the bike brand for battery replacement.

I have ridden Bosch units on friends bikes and something just doesnt work for me. Besides the noise and stupid small chainring, I dont like the pedal feel as much as the brose although it has the power. That being said, its probably the easiest to get serviced and the most reliable. While the batteries are small wh wise, they are also small size wise so carrying a second should be easy and getting a replacement should be easy as well. I havent tried the newest gen motors which use a bigger chainring.

I got to demo a shimano steps 8000 system for about 300miles and liked it enough that I had an order on a shimano equipped bike until I decided a juiced CCX would be a better bike for the intended use. The shimano was the loudest(which I HATE) of all I have tried but I just liked the engineering so much like the display with functions tied to a left rapidfire like shifter and the low q factor. I had many people ask about it being an ebike (due to the noise, never happened with a brose).

I just recently tried a Haibike with a Yamaha system as well as a Giant Trance (yamaha derived system) and must say its probably the next ebike motor I would go for. Actually pretty quiet and I like the pedal feedback.

I have also test ridden a 2019 Turbo Levo with Brose and absolutely loved everything about the bike.

So in the end, I love my Brose equipped bikes. I realize they might have reliability issues but I just enjoy riding them so much that for me, its worth it.
 
Just hit 400 trouble free miles on my Moda this morning, and hoping for many, many more. There is a thread going in the ebike forum on MTBR on a Moda with a shredded belt that the guy is trying to self repair. I'm hoping that anything belt related will be an easy fix, although the recent sale of Izip to a venture capitol company and the disappearance of the Moda from the line up makes me a little queasy.

I rented a Specialized Turbo Como in Colorado and went biking all day around Colorado Springs including Garden of the Gods. Just awesome, I went 45 miles and 2600 feet of elevation change. Just loved the bike and it also seemed like it solved the hard shift problem that you have to be careful about on the iZip Moda. On the Moda you have to really back off pedaling or shifts will be hard, supposedly Specialized has special firmware that detects a shift and backs off on the motor. But the Specialized bikes are really pricey.

I'm up to 700 miles on the Brose S that's in my BH Atom X. I've completely submerged it in river crossings 3 times 😳😳😳😳. It's still functioning perfectly afterwards. I hope I don't live to regret those dunkings. One was a depth miscalculation and the other two were done out of peer pressure, trying to keep pace with analog mountain bikers. But so far, so good
 
I have a total of about 6000km (3700miles) with Brose motors on 2 Specialized Vados.
My first, a Brose T or Specialed 1.2, started making noise when I stopped pedalling. This was after only 200km from purchase mid July 2018. The bike shop got a new motor sent from Specialized and the bike ( 2018 Vado 4.0) was fixed in a week. Rode another 3000km without problems but the bike was stolen in late October.
Bought a new 2020 Vado 5.0 on April 30th. Have ridden it only about 2800km but I am enjoying the motor and bike. I don’t commute, my riding is just for pleasure.

Hi, Sorry to hear that someone stole your Vado. I will be very sad if either of my e-bikes get stolen. I only use a cable lock on them both, but try to park it in very visible places where thieves would have to be gutsy.

Thank you also for your input. It sounds like my co-workers problem is possibly an outlier as quite a few people have chimed in with 3000 to 4000 miles with no problems. I have 4000 miles with no problems on my Diamondback Lindau, but it is stone simple and I would expect it to be problem free for a long time. Rear hub motor with no gears or parts to wear out other than bearings.

Also my co-workers iZip Moda sees very hard use. He uses it to commute to work and it is a 22 mile commute each way. Since it is a long commute he runs it on the highest assist level and comes in at 25-28mph the whole way. He has a charger at home and at work and charges it both ways. I think that my usage is much different as I am getting 60-80 miles per charge as opposed to his 25 miles per charge.

no serious issues. The motor feels cutting out split second as if the break is engaged. I had taken the battery out and in few times. May be wasn’t sitting well.
I took to my dealer. He updated the firmware. It is OK now. I need to ride more to make sure it does not happen again.
aside from this it has been a great pleasure to ride it.
 
I have read user reports having problems with the display not going above 10.000km at a Specialized Vado with the Brose motor.

First aid was to switch the display to miles. ;) Specialized is working on that "problem" to get it fixed.

The belt in the Brose motor should be exchanged after 15.000 km but there is advice to do it/have it done before that.

In my experience on the BH Atom X there was no "trying to keep pace with analog mountain bikers," they were so far behind I was riding alone all day. Uphill or downhill that bike rocks, it's one of my favourites.

Well, to be more precise, when I said analog mountain bikers, I meant friends, and when I said "trying to keep up" I meant that I had my assist dialed down to minimum, which they felt was fair to make up for the added weight of my bike.

The buddies figured that crossing a stream was something I'd refuse to do, and would thus have to ride a quarter mile to a bridge....but I called their bluff, pretending all the while that they were dreadfully misinformed about ebikes, and that they were indeed, completely waterproof. 😳😳😳

Lost three motors in under 1000 miles two belt failures one clutch failure, Specialized is taking the bike and refunding money.

Hi there! I live in Denver and also have cabin in Grand Lake (Rocky Mtn Natl Park west entrance). Been riding Vado 6 for several years averaging almost 10,000 miles each year! And most of it climbing from Grand Lake (el 8400) to the top of RMNP and over 4000 feet elevation change in 24 miles (all UP). It's great bike and I've generally been very satisfied with performance. Really the only issues I've experienced have been occasional no power to pedals while riding and occasional no power to pedals at start up. Both issues require restart and problem disappears. Each year over winter lbs sends motor to Specialized and they do the overhaul --- $100. Happy to provide more info... more fun than the law should allow! Oh, did I mention I'm 76?

Update. After changing the display things were ok but the last firmware update (March) caused the old issue of motor not responding reappear.
LBS sent the error log to Specialized. Got a new motor after 1200 miles.
have been riding the new motor 250 miles with no issues. 🤞🤞🤞

The Brose motor is well regarded in a number of areas... quiet, powerful and paired with good KWh batteries.
Full disclosure... I own EBikes with Shimano, Bosch and Yamaha mid-drive systems. ;)

· Brose auto components company developed high-performance mid-drive motors for multiple mountain bike (MTB) and commuter bike manufacturers
· Among the most powerful motors on the market offering a 90 Nm of peak torque
· The belt-drive motor provides the quietest eBike motor available
· Generally has a bigger battery pack providing a longer range

I would consider a Brose powered ebike if it didn’t require a change of the drive belt every 15K kms. For the distances I ride, a motor would need servicing at least twice a year 😩 💵 💰
