High Visibility & Reflective Socks

I saw someone recently that was wearing high visibility socks. I never gave them much thought until seeing them. I have done some Google searches and there are some that are hi-viz yellow/neon green and others that are not hi-viz, but have reflective material in them. Are they worthwhile or a waste of money?

I use those velcro pant leg bottom straps at night, on both legs. I have 1 velcro one and one slap on. Easy on/off and they are very reflective. I'll try to get a picture as I'm not near the bike right now.

Ditto, but with 1 or 2 reflective day-glo LED slap-on ankle bands. Easy to use and a huge visibility boost in the darker hours— in large part due to the pedaling motion.

Couldn't hurt during the day, but not sure how much visibility I'd gain over the high-vis jacket or vest and daytime bike lights I always use.

Now if the high-vis sox were also aero — well, that'd be a no-brainer. If TdF legend Mark Cavendish was willing to spend $1,200 on a pair of aero sox, imagine what they'd do for my riding!

there have been studies done which show that the single most recognizable thing to a driver is a pair of reflective/illuminated objects going around in circles. it just inmediately registers as CYCLIST to the brain’s image recognition system. our brains are also very attuned to spotting motion, and if you’re coming towards a cyclist on the same trajectory there isn’t much lateral motion.

when I’m on a long ride, I wear very bright aero socks - they also make you much faster, so much so that the UCI has a height limit on socks - and if I rode a lot at night I’d consider some kind of lights as well.

i like these

but make sure you’re within spec before you head to a race 🤪

The velcro one goes on my right leg because I wear pants during the week and the slap one goes on my left leg if out after dark. The slap one was free from the Fairfax VA bicycle safety coalition. I've had it for almost 30 years! Still works great. I put them on my trunk bag handle when not in use because I loose stuff all the time.

My rechargeable LED slap bands are more like this:

No velcro. Just straighten band, slap it against your ankle or wrist, and watch it wrap around on its own. Secure, comfortable fit.

For night cycling, I'd recommend at least one ankle band. Still debating whether to put the 2nd on the other ankle or on the wrist I use for hand signals.

Work commuting before dawn always had me concerned with being hi-vis from all directions. I don't think drivers from a side streets can see my socks because of parked cars or shrub/hedges sometimes. I like having side illumination on my ebike, hi-vis jacket, and front/rear helmet lights during work commuting.
