Hey all:

I made my first GoPro purchase. I'm a bit of a camera/photography/videography enthusiast but I never really saw much value in GoPro cameras. I am however a DJI fan and have been using the Osmo Action Camera for every ride for about a year now. I've had a few cheap action cams over the years and never used them much because the shakiness was nauseating. When the DJI Osmo Action came out, I had to make the purchase after watching this comparison video by iPhonedo.

So now I have the GPH9 Black. It's good. I really like the colors it produces. It's bright and saturated. I'm not very well-versed in color grading so it's good enough for me. I love the loop function for commuting which acts exactly like a dashcam (will create multiple video files until the card is full at which case it will start over-writing the oldest file). It's a function that was not present in the Osmo Action so I had to delete junk files every couple days even on a relatively big 256GB card. The stabilization is a toss up between the GPH9 and DJI. The GoPro seems to handle the "yaw" axis better than the DJI, which is important when it's mounted on handlebars. It also retains a wider field of view than the DJI while stabilization is active. Where it falls short of the DJI is on stabilizing sudden small impacts like streetcar tracks and rolling off the driveway. I'm hoping this is not a deal breaker when I take the bike on more technical singletrack. I didn't do any side by side shots but I've memorized the route and how the DJI behaves when in that location.

There are dozens of other things I'm leaving out but hopefully this helps other riders who are considering the camera for commuting and recreational uses.

And here's a 2 minute clip from the commute in this morning:

Looks great. How are you mounting it?
I’m still working my Hero Session 5 as I don't use it very often but I do like it’s stabilization capabilities.

I’m using this bar mount. I’m going to be looking at a different solution since I’m discovering that I get more vibrations since installing my Redshift suspension stem. Will look for something that I can use to mount directly on the headtube or maybe even on my front fender.

The following video is from this morning. I’m using horizon leveling and stabilization so it’s definitely more cropped and not very wide.

I’m officially jealous of where you are riding and of that GP9. Lots of very cool tech correcting that horizon line and stabilizing the image!👍

I took advantage of the recently reduced price on the superseded GPH 8 Black bundle. I'm still learning the ropes but so far, it's a great camera! I use the GP bar mount but have better luck with the helmet mount. It lets me pan more easily without having to maneuver the bike to get the shot I want. The camera stabilization system does a great job of handling unwanted head movement.

For this of course, you need the remote control or the smartphone app. I find the voice control using the helmet mount to be a bit unreliable due to wind noise. It works much better with the camera on the bars though. The only down side is both the remote and the app drain the battery faster, the app being the worst.

Lots to learn but the GP produces great video & photos.

One nice thing about the helmet mounts is that they are visible to motorists and I've noticed that motorists are a lot more respectful of me when I have the camera mounted.

I have the helmet mount set up so I can tap it and shoot some video, and tap it again to stop. So basically I can use it to take photos on the ride:

I have a helmet mount but cannot stand the helmet visible in the picture so bar mount is preferable most of the time.

I just noticed that plane about 70 yards in front of you. Wild!

The helmet mount I have is the strap type. I can place it far enough forward so the helmet isn't in the shot. If I use the extreme wide angle lens, the tip of the visor does show up though.

It seems like it would be straightforward to use ffmpeg to crop the frame if the helmet bothers you.

Great video!
I have the GP7 but that DJI Osmo would be so much better.
Would you strongly recommend GP9 over GP7? or is the improvement marginal?

I’ve never used the Hero 7 but I’ve been using the Osmo Action that you were impressed with for a year now. The Osmo is really, really good. But the Hero 9 is a bit better in terms of stabilization, wider field of view and horizon leveling ability. I see the DJI Osmo action for around $250 and I purchased the Hero 9 for $350. It’s a big difference but I really appreciate the loop recording and wider field of view as a commuter.

Think I need to move now!! Great video, jealous of your riding location!!

Since most of this camera's usage will be to cover my daily commute, I thought I'd share some snippets of yesterday's ride home.

Settings:
4K30
horizon leveling off
hypersmooth 3.0 stabilization on

Thanks for the video. I still have 2 weeks left in my return window and I'll exchange the GP7 for GP9.

I think it's a good idea. $350 is a lot of money but I don't feel too bad about it since it's something I use everyday. And it doubles as inexpensive insurance.

Easy for me to say as I haven't pulled the trigger on an Action Camera yet, but the helmet view with the helmet in the frame does add interesting context to the shot. Post processing cropping will take care of it for any desirable shots, but if it's true photography I want, I'm carrying my DSLR.

Just my current opinion of course. Once I pull the trigger and buy one, I'm sure I will likely have both helmet and handlebar mounts, and that opinion may change...
