Chain Slipping On Smallest Gears!

Bob if you find as I did the Sunrace cassette wears too quickly perhaps try a Shimano XT or Sram PG ( a bit cheaper) next time.
Thank you Steve! Perhaps you already know I am using the 11-40t 10 spd cassette. I have asked around and it seems that nobody is giving me a definitive answer as to which ones with part #s are compatible with my Deore XT setup. Her is the Shimano 11-40t however is over $100 dollars US. I am currently getting the Sunrace for less than $50 US. Here is the Sram Pg-1130 11-42t for approx $65-$87 US. Here is another listing on Amazon for $62 US.
Perhaps these are the ones you are referring to? Just curious.

Funny, on my 2018 Delite Mountain, I find the Sunrace 11-46 cassette shifts better and smoother, has better gradation/progression of gears and lasts at least as long, if not longer than the Shimano XT. Different strokes, I guess. As to replacements for the 11 &13 tooth cogs, I buy the Shimano cogs on ebay which although not painted black work just fine.

Thanks Richard. I am now experiencing a super smooth drivetrain more than I have before after the cassette/chain swap. As far as the 11t-13t cogs here the ZTTO ones are selling for approx $9.00US. You can find the same ones on Aliexpress for approx $2.00US.

Yes perhaps different cadences for different carcassses (-: I use an 11-42 which may account for the diff in shifting. I have an 11-46 in the drawer but only as a backup as I could not find another 11-42. I have read that the 11-46 does not shift as smoothly as the 11-42 ,in particular from the 37t ring to the 46t. But as far as longevity goes I have only had the single experience with the Sunrace which was underwhelming and I am not giving them another chance. I have 2 Sram PG 1130s and another Deore XT 8000 in the drawer but when they wear out I am going to bite the bullet and switch the whole system to the Sram Eagle XX1

Oh yeah bite that bullet. It looks awesome indeed. 👍

Glad things are running smoothly again for you.

Given that I can get genuine Shimano cogs from a US based supplier, for around $10, saving a few bucks for off brand cogs, with a long wait, just isn't worth it to me. I know it is probably way too late to worry about it but giving a Chinese company the keys to my credit card and/or bank accounts would make me quite anxious.

Point well taken. Not a big fan of giving info like that either, now that you mention it.

How often are you having to change out the small cogs you have referenced?

They generally last between 2,000 and 2,500 miles. They effectively double the life of the cassette.

My Trek Allant 9.9+ has an upgraded Shimano XTR M9100 12 speed cassette. It is the 10-51 tooth which has a 510% gear range, just 16% less than a Rohloff. The top tier cassette has the three largest cogs made of aluminum (39,45,51), the five middle ones (18, 21, 24,28,33) are titanium, and the smallest four (10,12,14 & 16) are individual steel cogs.

It is a $360 cassette so I have purchased two sets of all four small steel cogs to get the most life I can out of it. Hoping for over 6,000 miles. We shall see ;)

Yes Bob , the Sram PG 1130 is going on next. I bought them because they were available locally and they are reasonably priced. As Alaskan said ..." We shall see".

Great! This is beginning to be a toss up for me-6 of one and 1/2 dozen of the other with the swap outs. Do I spend $20> on replacement cogs or just spend $45 dollars on a new cassette?! I think I will opt for a new cassette and chain and keep them handy when needed the next time around. Idk, just a thought.
The Sram 1130 also looks like a nice candidate in the mix.

Very nice setup Richard! Never considered a high end model til you mentioned it. Thanks for sharing.

Riding an ebike there has been a tendency to adopt the attitude that the motor will take up the slack if I load the bike down with pumps, bags, convenience items, etc. While that is largely true, it as also the case that it takes more electrons to move more weight and wind resistance takes a big toll.

Riding my new 39 lb. Cannondale Topstone Neo Carbon 3 has turned me into a bit of a weight weeny and much more conscious of the value of an aero ride position. I am getting at least 20% greater distance in all assist levels on a 500 watt battery on the Neo Carbon versus the 625 on the Allant. The Allant weighs 12 pounds more and has me sitting more upright. I get the same speed and exertion on the lighter bike but to do so I have to drop the assist down a full setting. The Riese & Muller Delite Mountain with the gen 2 CX, a 74 lb. dual battery, full suspension bike, which I used to consider a lively ride just feels sedate now.

I have reduced the excess weight and left the wind catchers home, even on my heavier bikes. Handlebar bags are out. Trunk bag only when actually needed. Tools spare tubes, patch kit, etc is in a small seat bag. Pumps have been replaced with CO2 cartridges and fenders will come off as soon as the weather will allow.

Just picked up my Ebike after a full swap out of chain and cassette. The LBS mechanic indicated he was fine with leaving the original wax coating on the new chain. Took my 1st ride and I have to say the entire drivetrain is incredibly smooth with no more slipping in the last 2 small cogs. I am now reaching out to the cassette mfg (SunRace) to see if they have small cog replacements. I will also be ordering the steel ones from Aliexpress for comparison. Happy camper! 😁
FYI- I was able to connect with SunRace -Napa Valley-USA. They have a small cog kit for their cassettes which consists of 11t- 13t & 15t with a locking ring if anyone is interested.

That is great news. Does Sunrace sell direct to the public or does that kit have to ordered through a retailer?
