Bafang Ultra Noise ?

I have read a lot of comments regarding noise. Is it because of the steel gears ? My three year old Biktrix still have the nylon gears and it is nearly silent. I have replacement steel gears on the shelf but won't change them unless they fail.

Doesn't that motor naturally spike up to 1600W from the factory, but it doesn't run at that?

I put a new chain, derailleur and gear set on and I'm amazed at the lack of noise. Even quieter than it was. And smooth as a baby's butt.

I have the Ultra with the belt drive and it's very quiet, has a slight hum if anything. It's still quite new though so it may get louder as it ages and eats up the miles. That's the thing with the Ultra, you have to be on point as you ride or it can destroy parts or all of your drivetrain. I think they changed out the nylon because the Ultra puts out so much power that if say your in a high gear when pulling away or whatever, the nylon is the weakest part so it's the first to go. I've read about them snapping chains or rounding off gear teeth and stuff. 160 Nm is crazy torque to be putting through a drive train!

I wonder if the solution might be to use a PEEK plastic gear like LUNA does on the M600 that they offer.

If you have an Ultra that's not making noise, you have one of the early ones that was supplied with a nylon gear (early Ultra G510). The later G510's and the newest M620's (same thing pretty much to my knowledge) had metal gears installed, and there's no such thing as a silent one.

I asked Luna about their gear a couple of weeks ago, and was told it was for the BBSxx series only. Would love to hear there's a plastic (or composite, whatever) available that would replace the noisey metal one.

Not that they are THAT noisey. Hum or growl is how I would describe it. But not silent for sure... -Al

Mine is one of the very first ones. Fall of 2017. Metal gears on the shelf but won't replace them until the nylon ones fail. And I show them no mercy.

I guess not, this was EBR own Courts observation when he tested one this year.....
"Yeah, this motor is INCREDIBLE. It’s powerful, responsive like a Bosch or Brose, and surprisingly quiet."

I would think the word "quiet" might be subjective. I'm here to tell you that there are MUCH quieter running motors than a metal gear Ultra, or their M600 for that matter.

What's crazy is NOBODY experienced a huge failure rate running those early nylon gears. It was the "experts" that suggested it wouldn't be hard to take one out - though they never did. Bafang took them at their word, went through the expense of a production change, and now we deal with the steel gear noise.

The M600 with the Luna PEEK gear is pretty quiet, the thing is the tire noise will sometimes overpower motor noise anyways.
Also the BBSHD is probably the most silent powerful motor on the market right now. And could be a good choice if your biggest concern is lot's of power with less noise, it's also rated at 160nm.
For some reason not a lot of companies are using it maybe cause it's an older motor style.

My tyres make more road noise than the motor makes running. There’s a small gentle clunk as the power comes on then a whir as it gets the power down and going until the tyre rolling noise is all you can hear. The belt makes it a quiet system too. You also don’t get that ticking noise you get with a cassette of gears on the rear wheel as they turn freewheel.
But... then you have the gear noise as you change up and down with the IGH that you don’t have to do all the time with the rear wheel hub motor. I like the mid drive as a whole system, I wouldn’t mind trying the hub motor just to see and feel all the differences between the two or the Ultra with a chain.

Terry what brand of Ebike do you have with that system ?

It’s the MD1000, the same one BoltonEbikes sells in the US. I got mine straight from China though. Bikonit is the brand name.
