2023 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

So to make everybody feel better about a future with swarms of bicycles everywhere, the'ye going to ditch the whacky clothes and ride nude?

Trust me, this can backfire. Several years ago, I biked out to a popular beach park in Valencia, Spain. Turned out, clothing was optional, and many of all ages, shapes, and sizes opted out — lots of them on bikes.

Whether I saw biking in the nude as a good or bad idea depended a lot on who was going by at the moment. For a while, it was kind of a wash.

Then I got stuck in a long one-way line of bikes with a naked guy pedaling knees-out right in front of me. Can't unsee something like that.
I almost spit out my ice tea! That's priceless.

I collected my Starter Packet for the Mazovian Gravel 250 Race. Had a talk with the organizers. They are fully aware I will be riding an e-bike but not competing. No issue. Very nice people! (Ząbki, northeast of Warsaw).

That looks like something out of a warhammer video game.

Took the missus to Llandegla me electric, her acoustic.

Completely gutted to find the beautiful track out of the centre has been harvested, what was a gentle meander through shading trees is now a stark exposed path

The Airbus Beluga transporter flew over delivering wings to the factory in Chester.
laa3.jpg

Its a long steep climb and I was holding back because I didnt want to cruise past and receive a tirade of cheat abuse.
laa4.jpg

This guy went past us after the long climb doing a good 20mph, I went to check his ebike and realised he was acousting it.
laa5.jpg

The guy sat down was video calling a work meeting while working from 'home', times have changed.

The views were fantastic, full 50 sunscreen reqd, we get so little of that in Wales that the green looks out of place of 27 degree days.
laa7.jpg

Puncture, probably caused by a slowly deflating hole that resulted in a pinch flat, fixed it no problem.
laa8.jpg

I thought this boardwalk would phase her, but no problems ,cruised it.

laa9.jpg

Another boardwalk requiring quite a bit of concentration, not the slightest problem.
laa10.jpg

Even I walked this bit, the lad in front had ripped his innertube and no spare, a good two mile trail walk up and down hundreds of feet.

If you close your eyes while you read it, it doesnt count.

Looks like a nice day to ride, Stefan. Always happy to see Magda!

She's quite the trooper, I'd say.

Now, I am not sure that I can translate the meaning of that sign and its potential double negative. Non-Pedal assist NOT permitted.... Does that mean NO throttle? Or what the H%LL does that mean?

Early AM rides

Recently, we’ve been getting off to early starts and find that the morning air is invigorating and the ride conditions more pleasant with barely but a handful of vehicles to deal with. This morning in particular was stellar with no wind to speak of and the melodious refrain of the marsh birds created a stirring welcome for anyone fortunate enough to enter their realm.

About a week ago, my wife fell from her bike onto some exposed tree roots and injured her ribs as a result. This has put our west coast cycling trip in jeopardy as she continues to recover. Fortunately, it wasn’t serious enough to prevent her from riding but each bump in the road is a constant reminder that it might take some time before she can return to her original form.

Beautiful mackerel skies! Hope your wife recovers soon. Rib and costochondral cartilage injuries are miserable — especially when you have to cough or do something strenuous with your upper body.

Thanks for those kind words, Jeremy. I’ll be sure to pass them on. We’re both grateful that the impact didn’t result in an injury severe enough that it would prevent her from riding for a prolonged period of time. At least she's able to sleep at night albeit with the help of prescribed painkillers.

Aw man... I've cracked my ribs on my dirt bike in the past. It hurts, breathing, laughing, sleeping wrong etc...
Hope the missus heals fast, and sending best wishes!

Thanks Dave. Cracked ribs have got to suck big time. It was a bit fortuitous that she landed on her arm which was subsequently pinned up against her ribs upon impact. Of course, it didn’t help that she couldn’t unclip from her pedals quick enough. No fracture to speak of but a lot of discomfort when doing those things that you mentioned that come natural to us.

Pretty much all you can do is wait... time fixes it but it takes a while.

Sorry to hear about that Art! I hope your wife will recover soon as I know the best how such injuries hurt...

Thats a nice pic of Magda Stefan.
Does she want all those choccies?
I made a gift of three boxes of assorted chocolates so she could have a choice, and I admit I assisted her with tasting (although I should not intake so much sugar!) We both decided the Milka "Alpine Milk" was the best! Please read about Ptasie Mleczko here (a Polish specialty I'm sure can be bought in Britain). While it was E. Wedel that invented Ptasie Mleczko (and the brand holds the registered trademark to the product), other confectioneries such as the Swiss Milka offer Bird's Milk under different names. The Milka's Bird's Milk was delicious, especially as it was also stuffed with liquid caramel! Another chocolate box was from E. Wedel (the one seen in front of Magda), and the box itself was a collection of games and puzzle for children! ❤️

Immensely. Absolutely clear as mud. So, why did they post that sign in Polish? :)
I really cannot understand you Kahn! The sign is in Polish. At least I could understand it at the first sight! :) Translated to English, it reads: "Only legal e-bikes allowed. Chargeride stay out!" :D

From my trip

Sportano.pl belongs to the new breed of sports stores. It is relatively small inside and full of attractive product displays. It is not your regular store though! It is an "online store with immediate product delivery and returns". Sportano claims to hold as many as 60,000 of items in its warehouse. There are many large tablets installed. You (assisted by a friendly salesman) browse through the product library, and add items to the Basket. When you are ready and have gone to the Checkout, the salesman goes to the warehouse and brings your choice within several minutes. Now, you can inspect the products, return what you don't like, and carry what you like to the cashier's desk to pay. They also have a workshop around (for instance to adjust your chosen bike post purchase or for servicing later).

1685849746359.png

Regarding e-bikes, Sportano chose to carry quality e-bikes at reasonable price such as this Lovelec Sargo with the Dapu mid-drive motor. Lovelec is a Czech company located in the dual city of Cesky Tesin/Cieszyn (straddling the Czech-Polish border; as you know, there are no borders inside the EU). My first e-bike was a Lovelec, and I respect that company very much! (The Czech/Polish border area is a montane country where e-bikes are more than appropriate, and especially the Czech are frugal people who got totally hooked by e-bikes!)

1685850312897.png

A Superior full suspension e-MTB (€4,300). Superior is another company from the montane Czech-Polish frontier area. Superior e-bikes come with either Bosch or Shimano motors (making them more expensive).

Żerań Heat Plant as seen from the Toruń Route (an expressway) by the Gen. Grot Bridge. Warsaw is still a District Heating city, and we still have as many as three huge Heat Plants in Warsaw.

When I was pedalling north-east on early Saturday morning, the traffic was minimal. I chose riding the Warsaw W-Z Route (W-Z means E-W for you) with traffic and enjoyed it very much! Just fancy riding smooth asphalt at speed, silently, with very little traffic lights on my way! It is a great experience very little cyclists are brave enough to enjoy in Warsaw. Yet, I was cycling with traffic in Warsaw since I was 11 :) and I'm not afraid, especially with very few cars around me!

While the return via the Toruń Route, which is fully equipped with a bike path system was slow and painful. The map of the Toruń Route bike paths is totally weird, with numerous ramps, ascents, descents, direction changes, and like. It is not possible to ride there without a good GPS navigation! (Unless you know the area by heart).

A monster ruin of EuRoPolGaz building, an example of East Europe brutal architecture. It once belonged to Mr. Aleksander Gudzowaty (d. 2013), one of the wealthiest men of Poland who made his fortune on trading natural gas with Russia. The construction started in 2000 but was abandoned two years later, and the scary building has been standing there until now. It is under demolition currently. (An interesting case of East European fortunes created during the wild transformation from Communism to capitalism).

As I was vigorously pedalling to see Magda, I had to stop for a sandwich and to swap the batteries on my Vado. Two almost new skirts hanging from a local announcement board? No-one could explain what those skirts were doing there! :D

The more I'm riding the more my legs get tired...
