2020 : Our Rides in Words, Photos & Videos

The last ride of 2020 went well (for 2020) that means I didn't get run over by a truck or drop the bike in the river, I guess. Temps right above freezing at high noon 33F and little wind, but damp.
Wanted to try out the Christmas gift balacava in the first picture, so I wore it with thinsulate gloves and a heavy vest and did my usual loop past campus and through town, then down along the river where it's a bit windy and colder. Result: the balacava is too warm for such moderate temperatures, my ears were actually hot when I got back, even without a real coat on. The pictures are as bad as my pictures always are, but I'll thumbnail them in just to push the page count a bit.

The second picture is an old sleigh on a front porch which is hard to see unless you blow it up, and the last two are just typical riverside shots of a hill across the river.
Saw only one other person on the trail, a runner not a biker. The trail is a part of a project called the Susquehanna Greenway ... a fancy name for what is really just a couple of old rutted farm roads with maybe an inch of asphalt smeared on top.

Here are a few parting shots of my last non-powered ride of 2020. It was a glorious morning to be out on the trails and look forward to my New Year's Day ride when it will hit a balmy 0 C. Wishing everyone all the best!!

This opening in the river shrinks a bit more as each day passes.

It should be an epic day for a skate.

Last ride of 2020 was my first ever ride with studded tires.

Side roads are still basically impassable for anything other than 4wd, so had to hop on some sidewalks to get to a paved path system. The instructions with my Ice Spiker Pros say to bed the studs in on paved surfaces for 40 km, and i tried to do that, but there plenty of spots were there was nothing but snow and ice. Next 15km will finish the process off I hope.

The studs sure gave me a lot of confidence, but I played it very safe as my shoulder is still pretty buggered and my ultrasound is next week.

Not a lot of cyclists out today, but hundreds and hundreds of people out walking with or without dogs. One border collie was very interested and kept pace beside me for a bit. Yes, I slowed the heck down, although there wasn't much velocity around people on the paths.

All in all a comfortable ride - i had my earbuds in and was listening to a book.

That's me for 2020, and wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2021!

Yep, that is awesome. When I look at those pics, I don't think "Looks like a comfortable ride".

I know this is a pictures or it didnt happen.
But...Im at my usual local haunt and the young man who used to own my fatbike turned up on his new DH bike, we got talking and I filmed him doing a little jump.

So this guy in a red bobble hat is watching, I rode over to him to make a joke of having a go and it was Jurgen Klopp the German football manager who lives in my town
Its so weird how he walks the woods by himself, its a testament to how chilled it is to live by the sea :)

Further to my ride on my new Schwalbe studded tires. I didn't have my dropper in, as it has a maintenance issue, so i rode with my Suntour suspension post. I am glad i did, as all the hardpack snow may have shaken my kidneys loose! The small part for my Coast dropper from PNW arrived while I was out riding, but I'm not going to tackle the repair until next year. 😉

Forest fires topped the news throughout California. This one, the Jones Fire, came close to Nevada City and our home.

My route down to the Yuba River, then Mallakoff Diggins State Park, and back over the river at 45 miles wasn't my longest ride of the year in miles but it was longest for time in the saddle at over 4 hours and longest for climbing in a single day at 6,100 feet pushing me over 12,000 feet for the week.

P1010422.jpg

A found treasure in North Columbia, a Ford WWII Jeep.

P1010499.jpg

Fall colors in town.

...and then I did find Sesame Street.

What the stuffing is?

Thanks Stefan...now I know where Singer’s ‘The Magician of Lublin’ is set
Thanks everyone for riding with me this year.
You can see some photo referring to the book/movie in this post.
In the map you're referring to, I forgot to mention the Cuyavian-Pomorian Voivodeship, where I had a 2020 ride, too. So I had been to 9 of 16 Polish provinces with my e-bikes in 2020. Pomoria, Greater Poland, Silesia, Subcarpathia, Podlasie, Opole as well as Lubuskie are provinces I should visit in 2021 :)
