Alternate route to Mud Bay today.
Temps are lower lately and I left around 19C so packed a long sleeve just in case.
Decided to take a greenway I often ride, but rarely take it the whole way, so...
Pretty busy power infrastructure...
Now dropping onto roads...
Took that frontage road I rode a couple of weeks ago...
Holy! The tide is in mate!
And off home...

Mud Bay with no mud showing? Must've been quite a high tide, but maybe not too surprising a few days before the new moon.

The trouble with Marie
Unusual September skies these last 3 days from former Hurricane Marie, now down from a Cat 1 to a post-tropical cyclone some 700 mi SW of San Diego.
Marie 2-3 days ago as a Cat 1 some 600 away. No chance of landfall now, but SoCal's still feeling her many far-field effects — including unseasonal rain, temperatures and humidities 10-20°F and 30-40% above normal, and dangerous, damaging surf riding in on unusually high tides.
Light distal rainbands with gusty winds swept through here (coastal San Diego County) day before yesterday, when this satellite image and most of the photos below were taken.
The winds were far from damaging here, but they did take down many of the gorgeous orange blooms on this African tulip tree, one of my neighborhood favorites.
Clear skies are the rule around here in September. But Marie's been serving up something quite different — dramatic high stratus or cumulostratus cloud decks with sporadic rain.
No sun, but wore my cycling glasses anyway, as they somehow made the clouds look even more foreboding.
The good news: Marie's also given us unusually dramatic September sunsets 3 evenings in a row now.

East Pacific hurricanes
Most people think of the Atlantic when they hear "hurricane", but these powerful storms also ply the East Pacific, and they're on the rise here. The closest to us typically sweep north off Mexico, then hook west out to sea without landfall.
But not so in 2023, when Hurricane Hillary passed through San Diego County just east of us. She was down from a Cat 4 to a post-tropical storm by then but still did significant damage inland.
So we keep a close eye on these storms nowadays. As Marie's reminding us now, they can cause significant trouble even from 600 mi away.
Business as usual
Thought for sure the rain and gusty winds would put a damper on hummingbird operations, but our feeders were hopping as usual.
This one shot past me like a bullet. Fast little buggers.
Likewise, this banner tow plane was still about its business of tempting tourists from well below the high clouds.

Far-field Marie mischief to our north in Long Beach, CA.
Spectacular wave reflections off the seawalls at 5:00. Some seawalls failed in this barrage. Others were weakened. Lots of property damage from local wave flooding. South-facing shorelines took the worst beatings — especially this one.

The knees seem far from done with their current rebellion, but they're letting me get away with 10-15 mi coast rides every few days now.
Few better ways to spend those precious miles than a chipotle aioli dog or machaca taco run south to Moonlight Beach. Such a gorgeous September day yesterday! Better yet, we're now well past peak tourist season.
As always, stopped at South Ponto Beach on the way down to spend a few minutes with the ocean. This is one of the few places in North County where you can get this close to the waves without getting off the bike.
It was high tide, and South Ponto always has this high cobble berm, so hard to assess the post-Hurricane Marie sand situation here.
Had to stop again when I spotted a Coast Highway restaurant I hadn't noticed before. Must be pretty new.
Heck, I'd try it just for the very cool play on words. (@DaveMatthews, did you have anything to do with this?)
This sign was calling to me, but had to move on. Lots of different fried rices, curries, and other traditional Thai dishes on the menu.
Finally, a shot from the neighborhood green belt just before the ride. Biggest great blue heron I've ever seen by a good margin, and I've seen plenty. May have been pushing 5 ft tall fully erect.

Been running around like a head with my chicken cut off this week, but did a quicky down to the bay on Sunday.
Great day, but headed out with long sleeves as temps are starting to cool down.
Under the 64th Ave overpass and time to engage the long sleeves...
Dude was pretty relaxed, and as I passed he flew ahead of me, landed by the side of the road, taunted me to take another pic, and of course immediately left as I pulled out the camera...

Love cruising through Watershed Park on the way home...

Do you see a lot of great blue herons in Vancouver?
They seem to get around. Not as common as great and snowy egrets here on the SW SoCal coast, but by no means rare. Saw many hundreds one fall around Lake Cuyamaca (el. 4,600 ft) and adjoining wetlands in the mountains east of here. Also saw them now and then around our lake in Denver at 5,300 ft.

Yes, a fair number actually.
Apparently approx 30 percent of the world wide population reside around the Salish Sea area here (Georgia Strait).
