Are you using Qiroll grip tape? Ditch it. Because even if you clutch it right it does not provide full 1:1 ratio power. Somewhere along the ride i can feel it wasted/leaked out 30% of the roller through slippage.I forgot to take pics give more details as I was outside
3 km ride with friction tape, half way through i smelled burning or "melting" but thought it was from barbecue from a street parade (it was a coincidence), around 2.5km in i felt that boost was no longer boosting. Upon arriving I checked to see that grip tape was no longer there, with the black paint on the roller being completely worn off. I had applied the friction tape as 1 layer as I wasn't sure how much to apply and side by side.
So Im not sure if its just a bad tape that I got or a bad installation by me
(Also forgive me: I just learned and started my biking journey last month so this is basically my first "mod" to my bike)
Update: The tape no longer shoots out like a bullet, most likely because of the roller originally not being tight enough however im not sure if the roller is overtightened on the tire itself causing unnecessary wear. Is there a good way to check if its tight enough while prevent the tape ejection?
I think roller too tight. Here quick tip how to get it right depends (on type of riding you want: full boost or pedal). No, im using the 3m safety walk kind, however when my location it wouldnt arrive fast enough so I bought a cheaper one, but its kept rejecting till yesterday, however i feel like I have the roller pushed down too hard as the screw clutch is almost too tight to turn anymore (about 90% tightened) if that makes sense
Tips going up hill to avoid killing the friction tape > Use easy gear, slow down don't force pedaling more than what Qiroll can pull but try pedal sync to Qiroll speed. If both roller and tire rotate it sync and equal torque/force even in wet condition it won't worn the friction tape. Mine survive 4~5 month without need to change.Update: followed your asvice and im definitely getting more range/tape. I also switched to 3M's tape for more adhesive power. However on the very last leg home on a uphill, I guess the torque on the boost aswell as my pedaling caused the friction tape to rub smooth, will probably tighten a little more tomorrow. In terms of ejecting tapes, I have not had a single issue in that regard since, even when constantly boosting(the first time I used it it was only pedal with slight boost on stop and gos.)
I only apply like 1 layer, I guess I have to apply moreI have a trex fx3 and had this issue too originally. I had mine resolved by tightening the manual clutch a little more. Im still experiencing some rubbing off after 25km/14miles of use. I think because of my weight (10lbs heavier than you) having 2 layers isn't thick enough where even with my clutch almost fully down, the torque isn't enough to help push me especially on the uphill, im thinking about applying a third layer soon and testing out. Not worried about the heat because its getting colder. Will get back once I try it out
As a baseline from personal experience so far, you should have a 1st base layer as a backup, I have it glued together with super glue, and then I layer another over it.I only apply like 1 layer, I guess I have to apply more
