Why does giant need me to be online to use the bike?

Am I guilty of the same by filming rides doing silly stuff?

I have no interest in any form of competition when I’m riding. To me, it’s a matter of enjoying my time in the saddle. I do challenge myself occasionally with a moderately difficult trail, but Strava, for example, has no appeal to me. I use RideWithGPS but if something goes “wrong” like cellular dropout… so what?

I think it’s atrocious that these vendors are requiring internet access in order to operate their bikes. That’s just brain damaged to me.
 
Went with a friend to the local ebike store so he could test ride a Segway. We get there and he couldn't take it out because it was connected to a employees phone, who was off for the next few days. He was bummed but now he's looking at other brands. Friend claims apps are helpful in preventing theft, I prevent theft with a LITELOK. I dread the day some kid figures out to bypass the app security with a Flipper device, and steal the ebike just like a Hyundai or KIA. Give me a old school proven U-lock with a chain extension.
 
I ditched my dumb-phone some years ago. Freedom is so much better. It is like skinny dipping. Autonomy. I am engaged with my environment, with myself and my bike. My bikes are mine. I am the master of them and can program 150 variables to make them behave exactly the way I want. I would never outsource the control over my bikes.

Do you do "silly stuff" just to get YouTube views, likes, and comments? Lots of YouTubers do just that, but I don't think that's you.

I think you do your so-called "silly stuff" first and foremost because you enjoy it. Then you share your experiences. In your case, this results in interesting/entertaining content, so please keep it coming.

Sure, positive feedback feels good. But I doubt that's your primary motivation.

What seems really silly to me is letting how you'll look on Strava dictate how and where you'll ride. Totally misses the point of riding from my perspective, but lots of folks seem to be into that, so who am I to say?

Couldn't your friends just ride Dyfi with you without putting it on Strava?

By the way I have selflessly helped many hundreds of people on EBR. I am helping them now by showing a better path so they do not make a mistake and buy the wrong bike. No one should end up with a sucky bike they do not control.

My first vehicle with electric seats was my Grand Cherokee.
I was never comfortable driving it because I always felt that I needed another position tweak and constantly adjusted every tiny parameter, with true confort always eluding me by choice.

Eventually it packed in and in one day I found it to be the most comfortable seat Id ever owned.

The Original Post was about how handle the situation in which accessing the Giant Ride app to have a Giant e-bike connected was impossible because of the lack of the network coverage. The only two on-topic answers were:
  • Use a Garmin Edge computer as the e-bike display
  • Only use the Giant Ride app for occasional motor tuning.

Apps are just web browsers locked to their servers, that allows them to access far deeper into your phone.
"Once you pop, you can't stop".

The e-bike app (like Specialized App for your Levo) is useful to explore the inner of the e-bike (like tuning the motor for high performance or long range). It is possible to totally modify the behaviour of your e-bike, which is especially valid for the Levo as the e-bike is truly advanced. Some users use the app as an e-bike display (your Levo has no display). Some record their rides using the app.

Nothing stops you Chargeride to ride your Levo totally autonomously, no app, no connection, and you prove it with every and each Levo ride.

@wcndave tried to use the Giant app for "everything": the tuning tool, the display, the ride recorder. Unfortunately, Giant software engineers are not the sharpest knives in the drawer, so the Ride app is obviously flawed. Hence, I and @DaveMatthews have suggested to @wcndave getting a Garmin and solving the issue once and for good: e-bike monitoring, e-bike display, ride recording. Only this information is useful, not the posts on your Grand Jeep Cheerokee, for instance.

Yes, Charge, you seem to think you are as important as governments and corporations do anything to control you. Not. Your Levo or Dave's Giant are autonomous. You have chosen staying it autonomous, and thus you got rid of many advanced capabilities, for instance tuning the assistance the way your Levo could have a long range on the flat but offer a high performance on steep climbs. You even are not aware how many % of the battery are actually remaining! Your choice but do not prevent other people from being modern and efficient.

Your views remind me of a person who says "Why all these portable X-Ray stations or anesthesia at the dentist? In them olden good times it just took a blacksmith to pull the tooth and nobody was complaining".
