2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Thats not riding on sand, its parting it like moses

No experience with fat tire bikes, but I know what it's like to ride in the loose, dry, deep beach sand that @RabH showed with 38 mm (1.50") and 60 mm (2.35") gravel tires: It's hopeless. Can't imagine any skill level making it rideable at those widths.

Q1. So how wide a tire do you need to ride that stuff comfortably on a reasonably powered ebike?

Once saw a guy really struggling on 4" tires. Got bogged down a lot. But I think the late Matt Robertson got 4" knobbies to work well on this kind of sand on a 2 wheel-drive ebike he built himself. (Miss that guy.) Makes sense.

Q2. Would 5" be wide enough with RWD only — without kicking up a rooster tail?

I fitted my spare gopro under the peak which allows me to film without reaction, we dont see many orthodox jews, but theyalways look like theyre on a mission

Its strange that the fire completely misses the path
ytr2.jpg

Bit close, if it was in another few feet I would be turning back for a mile or scrambling the bike over

In the summer the beach fills with various ethnicities, we never see them again till next summer

I noticed the guy in pink was eyeing me up, the other guy completely ignored me.

The lovely young lady had an amazing voice and whistle, she was playing only to me at this point.

Several supercars were being shown off.

Nearly finished dismantling the Open stands, loud American golfers.

It depends how deep it is. I have been able to power through short stretches of loose sand, but it had a packed base. Beach sand, no way. Plenty of people ride 4" analog fatties on the beach by deflating their tires, but adding the weight of the drive system has to make it challenging.

Emilys Tower over looking Abergele, this is part of the huge mock castle and this whole hill has been turned into an unofficial mtb trail centre.
The tracks are unworldly and there are climbers all over the tall granite slabs.
Ive been out 6 hours, 32 miles, 3200ft.
An epic ride, pushing hike a biking, on my hands and knees.
Simply fantastic.

I rode 25 miles today and took a look at a wind farm that’s going up.

We drove to Southern Illinois and spent a night to be in the middle of the last eclipse here, April 2024. We were more or less dead center in it so it lasted a few minutes. The best way to describe it is a 360 degree sunset, very cool. You can feel it cool off when it happens. My daughter was going to school in Carbondale so she saw the one in 2024 and the one in 2017. Both were total and happened to criss cross in southern Illinois.

Another bridleway ride starts next to a motorway
asp1.jpg

Path went through these lovely barns, could hear pack of dogs going balistic
asp2.jpg

They started chasing me down the bridleway, I got past the gate, turned to see it was one very annoyed little Spaniel
asp3.jpg

I'm not sure I should venture in without double underpants
asp4.jpg

Started reading, started seeing the Romans point.
asp5.jpg

Obviously an ebay bought sign, couldnt be bothered making a fuss as I had planned to sneak through his apple orchard.
asp6.jpg

Some places really feel like Ive time travelled

On my way to Abergele
asp8.jpg

Bridleway went straight up
asp9.jpg

Hillbilly style house half way up, 4x4 required
asp10.jpg

Bridleway went right through their house, no one home so had an explore, too overgrown so used main road.
asp11.jpg

Heres a clue where Im headed
asp12.jpg

Bridleway went straight up, then exposed me to quite a drop.
asp13.jpg

Ive shown this before, its a mock castle
asp14.jpg

Theres more than this, the entire area is surrounded by its walls
asp15.jpg

This is abusy commuter road, imagine getting bored looking at it.
asp16.jpg

Trying to find Emilys tower, lost in the stunning trails
asp17.jpg

Gve up on the tower and then spotted it from here
asp18.jpg

Completely unmarked, searched through thick trails for twenty minutes
asp19.jpg

Yesterday started with a really nice morning and I had a pilot friend flying into Edinburgh Airport from Boston in a Jetblue Airbus A321! It was only his second time landing at Edinburgh and he was raving about his first time earlier this month, its one of the most beautiful approaches there is! So it was a ride to the airport to start the day, only 7C when I set off so I had to layer up! The ride to the airport is one of the easier rides thanks to the lack of hills, I had only climbed just over 800ft by the time I arrived! I passed Hillend Loch soon after leaving home and stopped for a photo, with light winds it was flat calm for a change!

As I was riding along the approach road to the airport I could hear a plane spooling up and decided to stop to see if I could catch it on the way out, it was a Delta 767!

1787398128108.jpeg

The wild flowers and weeds are really taking over this year...thankfully the high banking gives you a decent view across the airport! It started to get really warm in the sun and I wasn't complaining!

1787398238266.jpeg

You get a really nice view of the Pentland Hills to the south at the airport!

Easyjet smoking the landing!

I love the United 757's!

Old livery and new livery together!

My pilot friend after his butter landing, taxiing to the gate! I was videoing the landing so no photos of it but you can watch the video here! https://streamable.com/bfvg0a He pulled a nice wheelie! 😁

1787398823274.jpeg

I had a fun 90 minutes or so at the airport before setting off for home, let the climbing begin! ;) I headed west through Winchburgh and Threemiletown where I turned south to take the back road towards Beecraigs Country Park, stopping for photos along the way!

The Ochil Hills were looking amazing in the background, the camera doesn't do this scene justice!

1787399054223.jpeg

The bridges over the Forth!

1787399180218.jpeg

I also had these stunning views of the Pentlands!

1787399224688.jpeg

1787399262577.jpeg

I timed it nicely to catch the sun shining on the fields!

1787399303975.jpeg

The road to the country park!

1787399329824.jpeg

I decided to turn north before the park and take the big dipper road at Kingscavil, I was gutted to find the road strewn with dirt so had to slow right down as there were clumps of dirt on the steep part...thanks farmers!

1787399412772.jpeg

The River Forth and the Ochils from the top of the hill!

1787399450445.jpeg

The big dipper from the other side!

1787399518707.jpeg

The village of Bridgend in the background!

1787399581818.jpeg

At the end of the road I turned west towards Linlithgow and had this stunning view of the Ochils across the fields!

1787399643685.jpeg

I stopped in town for lunch and continued west towards Whitecross before turning NW through Maddiston and Brightons and up the big climb into Shieldhill, the clouds were getting a bit darker now and it threatened to rain!

The Ochils and mountain range to the north from Shieldhill!

1787399921841.jpeg

Thankfully the rain held off so I enjoyed the big fast descent down into Glen Village at 42mph! From there I took the back road to Bonnybridge and stopped at the canal path, while I was taking this photo a moron on a dirt bike shot along the path like a bat out of hell...

1787400300433.jpeg

I then took my usual back roads home, such great roads they are too!

1787400405078.jpeg

1787400414587.jpeg

I did get a little rain but it wasn't even enough to wet the roads and I had such a great day! More than 3000ft of climbing on the way back from the airport! 😂It looks like I will finally have a nice day on Sunday to ride up to the motorcycle racing at Knockhill, I just hope the forecast is right...

I love aviation! Thank you so much Rab for the pictures and the vid! ❤️

Just recently, I rode south of Warsaw Chopin Airport. While in Kinetic Street (what a name!) :) I was plane-spotting...

1787405913623.png

When I took that photo of a LOT Embraer arriving from Szczecin, a person from a van riding behind me shouted "Photography is forbidden here!". "Since when?". I do understand we are not allowed to photo the infrastructure but come on, each and every commercial airplane in the world has its photo on FlightRadar24!

You Rab are often reporting how strong winds blow where you live. This morning we were all set for a gravel group ride in Mazovia. As I woke up, I went out onto my balcony and thought "ooh oh!" when I saw the trees swaying in a massive westerly gale. Then I looked at the Messenger: "Stefan, tomorrow, aye? We must be reasonable!" -- Marek wrote. Of course, sir! It's tomorrow!

1787406322342.png

It's our planned ride called "Robin 103 Reversed*" (A portion of Mazovian Robinsonade 140). I'm excited! What is wonderful is I only need two SKM trains and an hour to get to the ride start line for PLN7 (GBP1.40, USD1.90). Living in Poland is so good!

*) It could be only my belief but I think the world looks more beautiful if you take your loop ride anticlockwise on a sunny day. It might be related to the apparent movement of the Sun in the skies?

Isnt clockwise funny, it works perfectly well both ways.
Does any culture run them the other way?
Its interesting..sunwise is a thing, but clocks are slowly disappearing amongst the young.
The claims they are being removed in schools are false, but there is a steady increase in kids who cant read one.
I guess android and apple could majorly influence that

Try doing a nice long loop (morning to afternoon) you know very well two times in opposite directions on sunny days. You'll find the clockwise landscape boring as the sunshine lights up everything in a flat way. However, the anticlockwise trip is completely different; the sunshine falls from different angles all day long. It is invigorating and fresh in the morning, and magical in the afternoon :) Well, it requires a several hours ride. A 50-miler is the right starting point :)
