Hello

I recently bought a Shogun ebike from Melbourne Bicycles - model below

I bought it for riding up hills and while it gets me up and down, it is clunky/abrasive changing manual gears and the chain has fallen off several times (roughly once a month). I am pregnant so I’ve become too frightened to ride a lot of the time.

I wasn’t provided a manual for the electric parts or motor and Melbourne Bicycles haven’t been willing to help me track one down through Shogun. I was wondering if you think this is something I could contact Consumer Affairs about?

I’m looking for information on how to look after the bike so the chain doesn’t continue to break and fall off.

Thank you for your help!!!

Have you looked at Shogun's website? They will likely have a 'manual' you can download.

Manuals are generally basic and will not help you with the electric motor (the best option is the manufacturer's website). As to basic maintenance, YouTube and manuals such as those published by Park Tool are your best options.

Thanks for your reply Aushiker. I don’t understand why I can’t expect a manual to be provided for a $2-3k purchase though? Even blenders come with manuals.

I saw today that Shogun’s info email is bouncing

First off, congratulations on the new addition.

There can be a few reasons why the chainring would fall off.

Does the chain fall off when in the highest, or lowest, gear? That would mean you’d have to index the gears. Here is a great video explaining the process.

Could also be a bent derailleur. In this case, indexing the gears won’t work until the derailleur has been realigned.

If you identify the make and model of the derailleur, then you can most likely find the manual for that and there might be other good tuning info and more detail on which screw does what.

If the chainring falls off while going over bumps, then the chain may be too loose. Taking a link out, or adjusting the B tensioner screw could help. A good technique to compensate for this is to slowly pedal while going into, and over, the bump. This puts more tension on the chain during the event that would normally knock the chain off.

And be sure the chain is properly lubed. A dirty chain can “stick” and not shift properly.

Realistically, any bike shop (that is willing to work in a bike they didn’t sell) could resolve this since it’s an issue across all bikes, electric or not.

This is the manual for a #11,000 plus bike ... Do not expect much for a bike.
