Winter Sucks

Tomorrow is Ground Hog Day. No matter what happens, it's only 7 weeks til the Spring Equinox.

It seems like we just parked our bikes six weeks ago, just before the beginning of WInter. Batteries were fully charged in case the roads stayed dry (they didn't).

We did get out on 1/13 for an hour. It was only 42F, but we forced the issue.

Last week, I posted about San Diego County's back-to-back 75 and 78°F days — not inland, but right here on the coast! Did it mainly to rub it in for members in much colder climes, but partly because 75-78° is pretty remarkable for the end of January, even by our standards.
;^}

This short-lived Santa Ana wind event passed as quickly as it came, and we were soon back to a more seasonal 60-65° for a few days. Then another short warm spell peaking with yesterday's near-record 86° at the coast!

Entertaining to see how local weather fits into much bigger doings in our atmosphere. This time, the regional weather map in my Windy weather app was showing a huge high-pressure system centered over Idaho and extending well into Canada and even Mexico!

The system's strong clockwise winds were picking up warm, dry air from a large swath of the US desert Southwest and pumping it to the WSW — right over us!

Not sure if this last warm spell was technically another Santa Ana ('tis the season) or an even larger-scale phenomenon.

I've been a wimp all week and actually driving to work! No one at work could believe I actually own a car. We had the word "snow" mentioned in the weather and now we have tons of brine and salt on all the roads. Other than it being cold I don't feel like washing my scooter from all the ice control currently on the roads. Honda motorcycles love Nissin brakes. Nissin brake caliper pistons easily corrode from brine and salt, like overnight corrosion! Oh, and the top of the fork sanctions also love to rust and pit easily from brine and salt contamination. I need a good rain to wash all the crud off the roads before riding the scooter again.

My legs have faded since mid-October but I am back in shorts again today. I did a morning ride and stopped by the river to have a cup of coffee while reading a book, in an Adirondack chair with the sun on my toes. I will lead a guy with a trike in an hour to meet four ladies with eTrikes so they can do Sr. group rides terrorizing neighborhoods. Then the big group ride starts downtown at five. Right now I am working on a bike with genuine Zhmano parts.

That trike guy is very happy to meet the four eTrike ladies. There were about 30 for the group ride. I had to shorten the original route plan because there was a slow analog rider with a kid on a trailer bike. It ended at a beer garden. The photo is the rail trail. It is a flat and fast way to cross town in ten minutes on a bike, when a car takes thirty, plus circling to find parking and walking from parking.

Yeah, winter isn’t showing any signs of quitting here in central Massachusetts. Gionni, that chicken sounds good!!!

Well I am glad some of you are enjoying a warm spell, it sure is nice to hear. Currently outside my home it is 8℉ with 30 mph winds and 8" of snow on the ground from 2 weeks ago. This is turning out to be a bastard of a winter, the older I get the more I hate it. No riding today or anytime soon.

Not as cold here, udog, but it has been bitter at times over the last month and prolonged.

um,beer!( my beer consumption had really went down in the past few years, partly by taste, partly by expense)

this winter has actually turned viscous( for the want of a better term) this morning the winds are howling,a couple inches fresh snow on the 5 inches of ice,14F cant wait for spring,my main heating plant is on the fritz,so I have burned a crap load of wood this winter.Mother nature has cooperated by knocking down a lot of hardwood trees.Still planning on a reverse trike or quad cycle, now my knees are really in question after the spi;; I had on the ice pack, a big piece of white oak slammed down on top of my sprawl right on the side of my right knee,Ortho man sez it wasn't broken, probably bruised the bone, the swelling went down inside a week. BTW,everybody knows the "Haarp" facility[sic} is being used to meddle with our weather.

It;s going to get into the 40's (5-6C) next week, but no rain for 10 days, I would like to see some rain to wash the salt off our pavement and vehicles. It also clears off those pesky frozen patches in the shade. Expect to do some biking soon.

I realized I spent much of January working on getting my PC's running. Some days, I didn't go outside. Have started walking daily this week. The pain in my ankles is fading,

Our 36 year old furnace went down when it was 5F, Bad capacitor on the motor. Hardware store sells them, six different sizes too. I don't know who else would buy them in our town of 120K, but I am glad they had them.

-5C with some very light snow (about a cm).

I'm off to explore some "new" trails that are in a wooded area just off of the regular paved and plowed MUP. A local quad owner has been ploughing these unofficial paths (appears to be 5-7km worth) occasionally during the winter (rest of the year they are just well packed dog walking paths in the woods and around the fields). This year with minimal snow and lots of cold weather the ploughed paths have packed down really well so I can easily enjoy them on a "urban/commuter" style bike (flat bars, no suspension but good 27.5/2.1 studded winter tires). Just going to have to dodge the dog walkers (after giving some of the dogs ear rubs and treats).

I thought up a Vado induced theory myself.

I remember studying CRT screens (cathode ray tube) in electronics class.
The cathode shoots a beam of electrons at the center of the screen to illuminate a dot.
The beam of electrons is shot through coils of wire that steer the beam and/or stop the beam to generate a picture on the screen.

Apparently there are nuclear submarines that can stay submerged for over a year.
These subs could power a HUGE magnetic coil right around the magnetic north pole to steer the ions (that cause the northern lights) entering the earth to change the magnetic field to steer the atmosphere and alter the weather.

It's entirely possible to even shut off the 🌎's magnetic field or even flip it upside-down.
That happens all the time anyway.
A catastrophic solar flare event could easily stir the liquid iron magnetic core and flip it upside-down.

I say we should just go ahead and flip our field upside-down.
I want to see if the birds start flying backwards? 🦜

That'd be Fricken 😎. 😁

Apparently the aliens have control over South pole (L. Ron Hubbard was delivered there through a volcano port in Antarctica. He invented the religion of science and technology.)
