Winter Sucks

Or fatties. Fat tires at 5psi just roll over snow and the increased surface area works wonders for ice.

Studs are great in snow, but am I the only ones who finds they are a death trap in just icy conditions like after freezing rain? They don't dig in and just reduce your contact patch.

As to winter, it's my jam. I'm miserable any time the temps get over 65F. I've been tempted to move further north to reduce the number of months I'm stuck indoors seated a foot from a window AC in nothing but my tightie whities and still miserable from the heat.

I honestly can't figure out how anyone lives south of the Mason-Dixon line.
I think you're mixing it up, fat tires are horrific in actual icy conditions. Studs you want narrower so there's more pressure on each stud and digs into the ice. Fat tires are designed for float in snow so it's the opposite. For commuting I find there's more ice and slush/shallow snow so a 2.25" tire works pretty well all around.

Don’t feed a little man troll.

Today is the end of the first week of December. Winter sucks. At 5:20 the sun is gone just when I am ready to read a book in the sun. Only two weeks to go and things will be looking brighter each day. Gripes about Winter are welcome as are adaptations. Hopeful signs and plans of Spring are welcome also. Persephone is rising.

Winter totally sucks! Riding my spin bike, and doing a Wahoo RGT time trial, got dizzy, felt sick, and then started to get a rash and hives. Turns out I got urticaria, and almost blacked out, but stopped in time. First time this ever happened to me. Riding outside is 1000% better! (having a breeze while riding is a lifesaver)

urticaria
Nasty!
A skin rash triggered by a reaction to food, medicine, or other irritants.
Hives is a common skin rash triggered by many things including certain foods, medications, and stress.
Symptoms include itchy, raised, red, or skin-colored welts on the skin's surface.
Hives usually go away without treatment, but antihistamine medications are often helpful in improving symptoms.

The last time I had that they gave me a synthetic adrenaline in the mid-'80's. I felt like I was dropped off a helicopter and was being chased by lions, all whilst sitting in an armchair. But it worked. It was an over reaction to an antibiotic. Swollen fingers, pale, hives and itchy as hell. I too much rather ride real bikes outside.
One guy had broken stationary bike connectivity and I advised taking it up a hill and putting a skateboard under it as a repair. "It will go just fine." Problem solved!

and digs into the ice.
I don't know if it's my riding style, where I am and the type of ice we get, or what... but I have NEVER found that "studs digs in" thing to be factual on any icy conditions I'd ride across. Flat out does not exist. Not a thing... They don't dig in and slide across like nails on a chalkboard... making VERY similar sounds.

It's another of the many things people talk about that runs 180 degrees contrary to my experiences. To the point I think y'all are just making s*it up.

But of course that triggers all the elite effetist cycling clique putz screaming "troll, troll". Because how dare anyone have an opinion or experience that contradicts the almighty bandwagon and status quo.

So which studded bike tires are you running? Enlighten me please?

Today we are having an atmospheric river event with 50 Mph winds, all hail is breaking loose with heavy rains and small high speed hail. I did have fun watching a Robbin red breast gorging on worms.

I'll agree he has it mixed up, as most tests have shown. However, if you're including all the really good studded fat tires in the "horrific" comment, that's not just an exaggeration, but very laughably false.

Are really good studded fatbike tires as good as the better studded skinny tires on glare ice? No. But are they quite good? Yes. Good enough to get a guy over any ice he may ever encounter quite easily and safely? Yes. Of course the fat tires won't offer any traction advantage until you venture off the ice, so if you never do that they wouldn't be my first choice.

There was a lull so I hopped on a bike risking getting caught in the storm. Just mist and drips. It was worth it to get a ride in. I cut the link to the solo. The beer is a San Francisco favorite to pair with fresh crab, warm butter, and sourdough.

Was a decade and 100 pounds or so ago on my 26" non-electric cruiser. First set were from the LBS I no longer trust for... much of anything, forget the brand. Schwab or something? I remember joking "is this a law firm or something I stick in my ear?"

I thought it was just that brand, so I got some Kenda with a goofy name (looking up online... Klondike maybe?) that I think are still somewhere in a box in my garage since they were just as unrideable in anything short of actual snowfall.

I tried both for about 3 weeks each, and I found them utterly unsafe to ride in all but a handful of harsh conditions, sliding around MORE than just normal tires. Particularly on anything remotely resembling a paved surface, ice or no. Just danced across the surface like water drops in a hot pan.
I'd say maybe an e-bike with the increased weight might have a chance to dig in, except again I was a giant 280 pound tub of lard at the time. 30 pound beach cruiser + 280 pound rider is gonna be a lot more downforce than a 70 pound bike and a 180 pound rider, making me even more skeptical.

In other words you’re spewing bullshit. Opinions based on a head trip. FFS dude you’re so transparent.
