Will 20$/ barrel oil, 1$ /gallon stop people from buying an ebike ?

But if gas prices go down low enough, will you stop riding?
No. I view things as this and that vs this or that. There are times riding my bike is more efficient regardless of fuel cost. Plus there are the health benefits, fewer trips to gas station, etc. I will keep my cars and use them where appropriate. Would love an EV car for local use but the cost right now does not make sense for me.

Is nice to see this thread getting some profund and serious discussions.
Oil is at a max. 3years from it's expiration date. Meaning the majority of oil produced for shipping /travel industry ( ships and airplanes fuel) will be useless.
A lot of cruise ships are @scrao yards and Boeing will join them soon.

It will never go above 50$ again, they are just artificially keeping it @40$ now but is not sustainable.
How can it be 40$ when most of the air travel is at 20-30%rates compared with the pre covid era ? And even the planes that are flying now, they CONSUME A LOT LESS FUEL.. There are 15-30 passengers now inside not 300. Some planes are going nowhere but in a circle for 500$/ticket.

Back then (pre covid era) the oil price, it should have been at least 150$ , based on the present dynamics and ratio 😉 ? It was sooo cheap one could say lol...

Lastly the newer 4860Tesla battery can do 15.000cycles with min. degradation. Those could actually work for an electric smaller plane amd they would definitely work for ferry boats , big or small.
Also there are wind turbines being buit that are 50stories high, better solar panels.
And also Plastic bags are banned . In Ny . In Nj. Soon in many other places. Crude oil is used for making trillions of them.
If I understand the fuel forcasts from oil companies, Exon promises to be good again, while BP is looking for a new line of work. Renewables.

BP apparently is looking for a new line of work. renewables.

Natural gas.
(Sorry but I could not standing reading that folly). What other materials, pray tell.
Agricultural waste.

Yes, costs are currently impractically high. But economies of scale will solve that problem quickly enough.

Now, you see, I am not going to stop riding my ebike, regardless of the price of gas, because I feel better both during and after riding my bike. Healthier, more energized, more alive. I don't want to sell that off for any price (per gal). Whatever the price of gas is, I can afford to drive, but the way I feel health and energy-wise from riding a bike -- that's priceless.
I have a gas bike I seldom ride with a modified kit that gets 200 mpg. if gas fell to 4 cents a gallon. I could travel 5000 miles for a buck.:p

With all respect (as I indeed respect you), you cannot make perpetuum mobile. That is, produce more from less. Also, a lot of energy is needed for the processing itself.

Renewables are cheaper every day...hopefully Biden will do what he says and at least remove ALL Federal subsidies for fossils fuels which will accelerate decarbonization. With solar dirt cheap ways to store the energy will be key such as hydrolysis and storing the hydrogen as ammonia. There’s your Ag use...hempcrete is another aspect finally getting its due. The US has sat out this century viz the Global Warming catastrophe. Hopefully, very hopefully, we’re not too late.

you have to do some reading on your own not just expect people to feed you everything...is a ebike forum but i could send you some links to do your research.

Exon promises to be good again,
they have internal documents from the 1960's of Exon knowing how bad it was going to get . But the gov. at that time decided in their favor.

The bigger problem is the methane emissions from tens of millions of sources , mostly unplugged methane wells. Not only in Us, but worldwide. Then is the permafrost melting releasing lots of co2's.

I have been an MSc, Proc. E. for past 33 years and I work in the field of clean fuel technology.

Oil companies research was from mid-80s...agree with Methane problem

Yes, the energy budget for making plastics that way is higher than from petroleum. But it is still doable and is in fact being done:

Bioplastics are currently used in disposable items like packaging, containers, straws, bags and bottles, and in non-disposable carpet, plastic piping, phone casings, 3D printing, car insulation and medical implants. The global bioplastic market is projected to grow from $17 billion this year to almost $44 billion in 2022.

As for perpetual motion, I recall that the First and Second Laws only apply to closed systems, which the Earth's biosphere is most definitely not.

Upon reading the Sunday's Ny Times, i found this very encouraging article :

- my take is that the people who had lost their jobs i oil+gas(100.000+ in last few months) , will get into the solar and wind industry. It will take some time but IT WILL HAPPEN.
There are huge contracts for wind turbine installations here in NE , and there will be many, many more !

And after this winter oil will be forever doomed.

Back to the original post......gas prices at the pump have no impact on me at all.
I currently do not own a car and have only owned one 3 of the last 21 years.
Never again, either. CN

Well, a lot of great things have happened since my post !! Obviously the catalyst was the vision of our new Man in Power @WH and we already have the infrastructure bill, lots of states demolishing coal power plants , huge orders for electric buses for many big cities, big contracts for wind turbines on NJ coast and many others...

Another great thing: tmrw. the Trump organization will be criminally charged 👏.

Unleaded Gas is sitting at about $3.00 here in the Midwest, where Republican legislators/governors are forcing gas stations to sell more ethanol to line big farming pockets.
