We need to stop blaming victims in bike theft!

For the next time around... you can add a disk brake lock that will stop anyone from riding off. They can toss the bike into the back of a truck or try carrying it off with a friend, but the little things fit in your pocket and go on/come off in a flash. I use this when, for instance, I am standing in line at the bakery and the bike is literally standing in the street parking 5 feet behind me. Should give me just enough time to ... enact countermeasures.

I like the Kryptonite version with the reminder cable that goes on your handgrip. They call it the Keeper.

oh this is awesome!!!

The morning of my partner and I got into a huge fight about something stupid and I needed a breather and I was not thinking straight because I care about my partner and it sucks when you get into fights with the person you love. I was out and had no lock because I was not thinking about lunch when I left, stopped in at a Burger King for 3 minutes.. gone. So now with all this info does this make me seem more of a victim and less dumb for doing what I did
Did you guys make up yet?

and you can disagree with me all you want but just know even though you don't think it. if you ask that to other people they will feel shame they will feel blamed for what they did. do with that information what you please. This is not a snowflake thing. This is not a left wing or a right wing thing. it's just common sense. If you don't care then keep doing it. but don't be surprised to somebody gets grumpy or angry with you.
You should probably report me then. I’m sure victim blaming is not tolerated on this site.
…….make an example of me……

let's not make it more than it is. I'm not mad at you. I'm mad at the 20 people that ask me before you.

people just don't realize that simple questions can make somebody feel more like a victim. it's very easy to do and it's very hard to see. again, I would have done the same thing before realizing it myself by being a victim. I'm not pretending. I'm some horrible victim that had horrible things done to me. but I was a victim of robbery. It really sucks. It makes you question a thousand things if you're an idiot. if you did something stupid, how could you possibly have done something So moronic. It is a whirlwind of emotions.. again please understand I'm not mad at you. I was angry the other night more at Reddit people than anything. The moron that decided to tell me I spent way too much for my bike and I got taken. I was just frustrated

This is ten bucks. It goes through a disc or a chainring. Power tools don't fit very well at a disc.

I cannot believe I had to read through 11 of the OP's posts in this thread to finally get to the answer posed in the second post of this thread, which, was the quite rightly asked question:

So, was it locked up?

MrCaspan, I really wish you had answered "nope, I fuc*ed up".... This thread would have taken such a different turn.

MrCaspan, I feel for you. I know exactly how you feel. One time, long ago, in a different universe, I handed an ounce (baggie) of weed to some guys I barely knew, in a car in a parking lot, for them to check it out before handing me my $15.00. Instead, they just drove away laughing maniacally. It hurt so much! The pain of my personal shame and embarrassment was amplified by the fact that two of my friends were with me in my car when the perps drove off with my precious inventory.

Yup, I fuc*ed up! Nobody to blame but myself. I was a victim of my own stupidity. Yes, I am victim blaming!

FYI - I never leave my bike unlocked (cable lock), I use a secondary padlock on the brake disc, I use a motion sensor alarm, and I never, ever, let my bike out of my sight.

MrCaspan, I am sorry for your loss and I hope the perp dies alone in a fiery car crash in a remote area of Kitchener.

I learn best with each f-up. I try to screw up as much as I can each day, so I learn more. I embrace and own each, I love them. They are my teachers. I run to them. And forgive my former self as naïve yet worthy. That is how I grow.

I will say I had a moped in Hawaii in the 90s and had a huge cable lock on it , always parked it outside my workplace to the metal grates out there for bicycles. We had a couple other mopeds that other workers had there , none of them were locked up.
I came outside after work to go home and the police were there interviewing the owners of the missing mopeds. And I get past the police car and mine is still there untouched. They didn't even try on mine , I locked through the frame and both wheels.

Unlocked it and drove away like Frank Stallone.

Here's my take. I was not blaming you. But, it is nice to know if the bike was locked. That gives people an idea of how "serious" the thieves are. The next question would be What Kind of Lock Was Used--which gives the same info. It's called INFORMATION, not blame. If you don't want those questions asked, don't post that your bike was stolen. Simple. I haven't read all the pages to see if you had it locked, or not. Might do that. Might not.

I wanted one on my bike but it has big old 4" fat tires on them. I could not find one that could go over them. I am pretty sure my new bike will have them. Like you said just even sitting on a bench with your bike right beside you. You need one as a defacto now.
t say your break while powering off to disable this feature so that you can walk with it. This should be a standard feature on all ebikes!!
A cafe lock is standard on a Gazelle. Not to worry though, you can again be a victim because cafe locks apparently are easy to deal with and there is a youtube video on how to do that, so say the Gazelle forum people. Also, one person posted that they left their two day old Gazelle outside a store with the cafe lock on, came back and the bike was gone. This was somewhere in Europe. No insurance and they could not afford to buy another Gazelle.

This is actually really cool. It's maybe for when you are in the park and the bike beside you. it takes away the ability for kick grab and runs or for when its parked in the shed. If you are going to steal my bike you are going to have to carry it away which eliminates a lot of theft as the majority of them seem to be crimes of opportunities. I would never trust my bike out of sight with just this on it. but I am for sure going to get one of these!

Yeah I think these Cafe looks are just good for you are sitting beside your bike. it prevents it from rolling away and what I call crime of opportunities they are not meant to be IMO leave your bike unattended locks.

Here is my take on what you just said.. It does not matter that I told you I am a victim and that you are victim blaming/shaming me by asking that question, you just ignored all that and replaced it with your explanation as to why you are justified in asking what ever you want no matter how it makes me a victim feel. "Ah you are just being a snowflake", "I'm just calling a spade a spade", "I'm just information gathering"

So if your partner is scared of a spider but you are not then her feelings are not real because all that mattes is how you feel right? "How can you be scared of a spider?!?" this statement passes judgement like they are weak, like they are a sissy or a scaredy pants, you are not scared of spiders. "I'm just information gathering" "I need to know better why it scares her", "I want to better understand". Call it what ever you want to to justify it in your head that you are right but it's still victim blaming/shaming. If a person is a victim you should not pass judgement on them, you can but do you really want to be that person that treats victims like that, even if you don't know them? Are you saying that victims are not allowed to be irrational after a victim event and maybe lash out or emotionally not think straight or look event to you crazy. Next time I am a victim ill make sure I stay in line so that I don't make anyone else feel uncomfortable about their opinions and research because it's so important you know that information to move on with your day.

I know most people on here are good people no matter how big of an a$$ they come across on a forum, I do it myself also, were so quick to respond without actually thinking. People love the people they are close to and treat them good. So why as soon as you come onto a forum do you treat others differently?

I'm done explaining it and I wont explain it again on this thread so if you don't get it or think I'm a snowflake then you are who you are and just don't get it so I'm not wasting any more time on educating you how it is.

Oh boy, here we go. If a thief really wants something they will get it, no matter what. No amount of locks will protect you. Now, if you slip up and leave it outside unsecured while you "run inside" then that's just an opportunity theft. Big difference, but still sucks that your stuff gets stolen.

Now why did I start with the 'here we go....'? I used to do repossession work for motorcycle loans for a few banks. I had a white cargo van, a bunch of huge bolt cutters and a strong coworker. We would snatch bikes like crazy. I made good money on that side hustle! I later found out that the owner of repo business (the one that handed me my hunting orders) would print up bogus repo orders, meaning we were stealing peoples motorcycles without knowing. Stolen bikes are big business in the repair/parts industry. It used to be $100 a cubic centimeter but now its around $250 last I asked. No, I no longer "repo" motorcycles but will still buy a new lock to see how long it takes to defeat. But lift-away theft into a insulated cargo van is hard to prevent.

When I worked in this industry I never thought about the owner being bummed out when they found their motorcycle missing. And I never blamed them for getting it taken. It just comes down to money. That's why you do all you can to slow a thief down. Carry good insurance and lay low by not showboating. But then again, if a thief really wants it they will get it.

This is horrible, sorry man that must have hit hard when you found that out!

Just by owning a bike now a days it seem you are showboating..

I just found this.. This is actually quite a nice solution for commuters They also have a version with the loop lock that locks into this and the cable is stored in your handle bars!

OFFS move on. Please...

@tomjasz There is no need to be rude, this is my thread that I started and I am defending my position. I am responding to a comment directed at me. If you don't like what I have to say then please take your own advice. No one is forcing you to stay here and read my comments, you know where the thread unsubscribe option is.

It's become childlike. Example. "my thread..." You screwed up. Period. Hopefully, we all learned something. Not about you but about how quickly our eBike can be stolen if we don't use this awareness.

But you're right. PLONK

@tomjasz Perfect example of the whole reason I created this thread and you just 100% proved it and to be honest you are being a bit of a jerk right now. Everyone just loves to blame a victim! I was asking for it, it was my fault it happened, I deserved it! thanks for proving my point!

This is a topic I started and you decided to join in on the conversation so your opinion could be heard, no one forced you. I then reply to a message directed right at me but you didn't like the conversation anymore so you told me to basically be quiet and move on.. Explain to me how that is childish again? You swear at me and tell me I need to move on because you don't like my opinion or ere sick of me defending my argument. Sorry but think about the logic of what you just did and then you call me childish for calling you out on it...

I'm sorry me defending my argument to someone upset you so much. I hope you can still have a good day!

Something interesting my insurance company just told me is that they offer a $1000 reward for any information leading up to the conviction or return of my ebike. zero cost to me or policy!
