Currently watching stage 1 live on YouTube courtesy of Channel 4's Welsh language channel; S4C. Very much enjoying the Welsh language commentary!

21 stages of summer enjoyment ahead. Ahhhhhh...

It's that time again!!!

Rats, forgot about the time difference and missed Stage 1 live! Can't wait till the full replay's up on Peacock. Meanwhile, headed to YouTube to look for highlight reels.

As with last year's main TdF thread, I propose that we feel free to discuss results as they come in. Folks should hold off coming here till they're ready to see them.

ADDENDUM: Thoughtful preview of the 2025 TdF below. Learned a lot, including the practical implications of the first 10 stages being relatively flat, and team research into why Roglic crashes so much and what to do about it.

Well we're off and running for sure- the crosswinds today caused the first sifting of GC chances. Remco, Roglic, Lipowitz caught wrong side of split & down 30 or 40 seconds I think and both Yates bros suffered massive 5 min time loses. You can't get caught sleeping with crosswinds! Great stage. Here's Lanterne Rouge's quick recap:

Gaps already to a lot of the GC hopefuls. Not to mention no Carapaz and Lenny Martinez sure didn't look ready for a 3 week Tour, so not as many top climbers for the mountain stages.

Maybe there will be more successful breakaways this Tour if Pogacar builds a 5 minute lead in the first week.

It looks like Girmay is in good form again this year. I'm amazed how he always manages to contend in the sprint without the benefit an actual lead out from his own team.

I watched it on Peacock on my way up to Maine fir a short vacation. Jonas looks good as does Wout. If Tadej doesn't look good, the world stops turning. Girmay gives a clinic every time he sprints. He may not win every time, but how he moves through the front without a MVDP to push everyone else out of the way shows everyone else how it's done. He may not always win, but he'll get points.

It's a bit odd that Intermarche have no lead out men of any description in their Tour picks. All one day/gc types, obviously hoping for breakaway stages. But after winning Green last year why they have not got a single Micheal Morkov type dedicated lead out to counter the obvious Van Der Poel/Pederson train? Girmay is their best rider in years. He is great at being in the right place at right time, but on his own hard to get past entire Alpecin train.

No talk of MVDP as a CG GC contender this year — at least not from NBC commentators. You guys understand pro racing better than I do. How is this possible? His pre-TdF season was full of big wins.

MVDP is not a Grand Tour rider. Neither is Wout. They both are built for World Tour one day and short stage road racing and cyclocross.

Snap was just writing that!

Jeremy - You mean as a gen classification rider? He would never be one. Too big boned/heavy for the high altitudes. Same with Van Aert. One Day classic riders. That's why Van Der Poel has become Philipsen's lead out man and Van Aert a bodyguard for Jonas, or a powerful train engine for Yates in the Giro. It's why genetically, there are only a few riders who have the unique traits to win in the high mountains. Even fewer who can also win against the clock on the flat. Very rare combination. Everyone is waiting to see if Remco can ever win against Jonas and Pog on the highest of high alpine roads. It looks doubtful. His plan I think is to keep on their coattails but win the TT and hope they have a bad day and he doesn't. As we see each year it never goes fully to plan for every top rider so there is always a chance circumstance will throw up a lifeline. It's also why for Remco, yesterday's snafu by losing time could have killed any chance for GC on day 1. They are already suggesting the time he lost would be his winning time in the TT, nullifying it.

They've got Phil's mike turned down so low, I can barely hear him.

Thank you!

Wout is capable of winning Grand Tour sprints if he can get into a good leadout, but that's really hard to do. Remco is the world TT champion and is capable of taking a minute out of Pog, but not Jonas.

I agree with you that Jonas looks dangerous already. Going to be such a battle!

It's interesting watching Netflix's doc on last years tour simultaneously with this year's one. I wasn't a big fan of the previous years but something clicked for me with the 24 Tour and seeing the behind the scenes of Jonas's mental struggles to overcome the residual fear from that life threatening crash last year is fascinating. He, Pog and Remco are such different characters. I feel sorry for Roglic, I remember distinctly that mountain TT when a crazily young Pog blew him away and stole the Tour from him. meaning he will now end his career without being a Tour winner. It was so close he must have thought he was home and dry and probably replays that terrible TT in his mind over and over. Cruel sport. Plus to be doomed by a young compatriot to whom he was a mentor.

Jeremy here's a link to Pro Cycling Stats (PCS) if you don't know it already, its very helpful in listing the full results for every pro race and stage and for seeing the nationalities and teams. You can also click on any rider and look up their stats; age, team history, nationality, previous wins and most importantly what kind of speciality they have, hills, TT, Sprint, GC etc. Its a great resource:

What is Milan whinging about? There was no infraction.
TV says Laurent Rex will be Girmay's leadout man.
The crash that ended my career was a lot like Jonas' but I only punctured one lung. If he had decided to retire right then and there, I would have supported him 100%.

I'm watching without commentary so was trying to figure out his rant too! Rex does look useful, good record in one days, hadn't heard of him to be honest.

I punctured a lung as a junior, can remember the pain and difficulty breathing and oxygen masks in hospital. I crashed into a parked van on a descent, head down didn't see it, he'd just pulled over, classic bonk end of a long club winter ride. 3 months in hospital with four fractured vertebra plus broken ribs, lung, crushed aorta, concussion etc etc. It killed my (promising*) career as I developed a DVT in the orthopaedic ward that wasn't spotted early and this screwed up my left leg so that was that. Thankfully no problems from the fractured vertebra, so that was something, they were classic impact fractures- my head hit the back door of the van, shock transferred to neck and spine and the fractures were between shoulder blades, so no bending there unlike if fractured lower in back. Went back to mountain biking, my first love previously, though couldn't race but had years of muddy fun with friends on the Irish peaks & bogs.

* 'promising' - in my own head anyway, sadly the race results tell a different story.

I guess, Lidl-Trek thinks they'll get better season returns having Mads focus on the Giro (where he was magnificent!) and the Vuelta? And hoping Milan can make it over the hills

I don't think Milan can compete for the green jersey. I mean, they'll get him into the sprint for a couple stages but who's going to handle the punchy stages for them without Mads? Besides, Mads would be a good counter to MVDP
