Throttle for the Priority Current

Being new to ebikes and wanting to commute everyday (even when tired/on little sleep) I wanted a throttle. The Current seemed great for the PNW, except it didn't have one. But thanks to this post, I felt confident in pulling the trigger.

One of the cables I got had a gray (vice orange wire). Initially swapped the way Jerry had to, tested but no luck. Original cable still worked (didn't fry anything) so I went "color to color" and it worked!

That said, it appears there is an open throttle port on the motor? Don't see a cables for it either, so soldering will have to happen regardless (if the port works, looks like a cheaper way). But, for the option we've gone for here I recommend not cutting all 7 cables at the same place as by the time I electrical taped each and shrink tubed it, it was too girthy for the channel. Had to remove the waterproofing to get it to fit, but think it should be fine being internal.

I'm in the process of customizing the bike a bit further and plan on creating my own thread for it. Think lights and cameras!

Hi Kraner: Thank you for your post with new information. Are you saying it might be possible to direct wire a thumb controller to the "open throttle port on the motor"? Would this avoid splicing or other modifications to the existing cabling? Details please, including direct cable needed and photos?

So, I did get it to work.
A huge thanks to Jerry and the other forum members for figuring this out, I was successful in fashioning a throttle to my new Priority Current.

Coming from a DIY ebike with a Bafang BBSHD motor, I missed the motor torque available to me, especially when taking off and crossing an intersection with vehicles.

I purchased these cables: https://www.ebay.com/itm/204504562320

And this throttle:

I only chopped off the green connector from the 1T3 cable, keeping the existing yellow (throttle) connector. This leaves me with the extra red/black plugs I can use to supply 5v to an accessory later if desired.

Disassembly and soldering were relatively simple given the tutorial videos folks have made. Compared to Jerry’s diagrams the only difference I had were his yellow wires were white in both my cables. I still recommend validating the pinout of whatever cables you get.

Reassembly proved the most difficult, just getting the motor side connector through the downtime (used a zip tie as a pull cord to get the connector through).

The throttle feels good so far, still not nearly the power of the BBSHD, but an improvement when I’m navigating in traffic and towing a trailercycle.

Revisiting this thread since Priority came out with a new model, Plus, which has a throttle. I have the olde version of the current, but my display cable does not have the white arrow. Has anybody had luck with fitting this version of the Current with a throttle.

Answering my own question here. Read something that the Lectric XPremium also uses a Truck Run Motor. Saw an Lectric XPremium in a garage sale and asked how much. Got it for $5 no battery no charger. Took the throttle and cables out and installed them on my '21 Priority Current. Works great. Only thing is the throttle is live even if the bicycle is powered off so I have to take the battery out every night to avoid accidental engagement and the two brake cables just dangle there. I'll ride it tomorrow and let you know how it goes. This will be super helpful starting from a stop whilst on hills.

So I kept the Priority display at first because I'm lazy but I am really glad I kept the Lectric display because after installing the cables and throttle, it now works as one would expect it to. I changed the tire settings to 27.5 and the screen time out length and this bike is great. Eliminated the active throttle even when powered off so that huge safety issue has been resolved. I didnt take a before and after picture of the cable I swapped in from the XPremium but there is a nub the cable that needs to be flattened out before you can install it on the Priority Current. I used a razor blade and some fine grit sand paper. This cable set and display works like a charm.

Nice having a spare parts bike, isn’t it? Out of necessity — my bike’s manufacturer vanished like a fart in the wind, and took my rear wheel assembly with it — I did the same thing for my Juiced RipCurrent S (bought a spare), but I paid a lot more for it than $5. :) It’s come in handy many times, mostly because I ride it a lot even though it was built with some crappy parts. Love the bike though.

In your case, Lectric can probably help you.

Absolutely, I have an XP3.0 and they are so responsive to questions and requests. It's actually how I sought out the XPremium in the first place. A buddy found a beat up one (stolen and left for dead) in the dumpster and took it home. Lectric sent him a cable set and a display. He ordered a battery from them and took the rest of the parts he needed from the garage sale bike I found. I'm helping him rebuild his find I saw that the XPremium also uses a Truck Run motor. And from what I could find online determined that it in fact was. After we got his XPremium back up, I took the display, throttle, cable to use on my current. It actually solved two problems for me. I was getting an 030 error and not getting a Speedometer reading. Priority told me I needed a new motor but I was going to ride it until it stopped working before replacement. So now, I have a throttle for that spot on my commute where I'm on a slope waiting for a light to change and a speedometer/no errors.
--Edited: My buddy corrected me for misnaming the model. He has a working Xpress 750 the bike we were fixing up and using for parts were for his kid, the XPremium.
