The new turbo Vado 2017

I've had a 3.0 for just over a month now - done nearly 600k.

The motor is beautiful, especially when it has been set with a top speed of 45k. Mine developed a little squeal early on, but the dealer told me to put some miles on it, and it has gone away.

I was wondering how the gearing on the 3.0 would go at 45k, as specialised designed it for a 32kmh motor. The 3.0 has a 40t at the front - the 5.0/6.0 which are the designated 45km/h models have a 48 tooth chainring. The around town and bike path riding I've done means I don't have need to push much faster than 40km/h, so the existing gearing is perfect.

I've wound it up to 48km/h on the flat, and that was at full stretch. I can't imagine being limited to 25 or 32km/h. Useful speed for dense urban area I suppose, but this bike loves to stretch its legs and seems to almost sing as it goes faster and faster.

The 47mm trigger sport reflect tires are suprisingly fast, but looks bloody silly. I'm not brave enough to really lean into the curves, so don't know their limits. At some point I will try 50mm schwalbe big apples or bens or marathon supremes (the 6.0 use a 51mm tire so should be room).

Brakes are a little underwhelming. I am heavy and feel they are just good enough, but no more. They have a soft feel and need a lot of squeezing to dump high speeds. My mass is the issue of course: gotta take a lot to stop a lot of gut when it's near escape velocity.

The lack of shift detection on the Brose is a thing. Bosch is clearly superior and in use much faster and easier to flick through the gears. On the Vado I'm not afraid to admit that I'm a rookie rider and spent weeks mashing the gears to smithereens. I've improved, but still bang out poor changes with regularity. Mostly it's just learning how long the brose will keep supplying power after you stop peddelling - there's a 3rd of a second or so where the power continues and will cause the gears to graunch if you shift too early. I wonder if this response time will improve with later firmware.

My clock resets to 6:00am every time the system is powered on - no word yet on what the distributor wants to do about it.

I’m just brainstorming here...

Could the lack of shift detection be something that might be fixed with electronic shifting? I don’t really know how that works, but it seems like it would offer the potential of coordinating the functioning of the motor with that of the derailleur. I do know it would add significantly to the cost, and might not be practical to add to an existing bike. But maybe Specialized would bring this in for 2019...?

I used mine in the wet for the first time ever and exactly the same issue the display keeps restarting

how do you go about getting that fix for the mounting bracket ?

I live in one of the wettest parts of the UK. My bike came with the "foil" display fix factory fitted so I have not had any issues with the display. however after 1000km I have had some wet weather issues. Once the bike would not turn off at the end of a very wet ride and once the day after a wet ride it would not turn on. Both issues were resolved by removing and replacing the battery. I also wiped the battery contacts but not clear if that was required. its annoying but thats all so far. I use it for comuting so rides are only 10km. maybe if I was in the rain longer it would be worse. Now at the end of a wet ride i remove the battery and display to allow any moisture to evaporate.

I Just send my 4 mail to specialized... The app is being tested and as soon as they can they Will release it... I want to believe it...

Hi everyone :) I've just picked up a Turbo Vado 4.0 and have a commute of about 90km round trip. On the first day I rode in to work with power in Eco mode the whole way. I've found that the battery is well into the third bar by the time I completed the first leg. I have some pretty serious hills on the return trip so I left the assist off, except on hills, until I was well past the half way point then used Eco the rest of the way and was well into the last bar when I got home. The next couple of days I rode with a combination of assist off and Eco mode both ways but I was quite tired at the end of those rides. Yesterday and today I brought the charger with me and used Eco all the way and it was a much more pleasant ride with no range anxiety.

One of the reasons I went for the TV 4.0 was for the advertised range of 169kms (105mi) and I'm getting nowhere near that. At best I figure I can go about 95kms on a charge. Very disappointing as I didn't want to have to lug a charger around and charge after each leg of the commute. My gear and I do weigh less than the 220lbs that they base the range on. It also doesn't seem to matter if I'm riding hills, pavement or gravel, I consistently get about 18.5kms per bar.

Now on to the lighting. The headlight pattern is not good. Before I actually started commuting with the bike I took it for a shakedown run part way and in the dark. I found that the light pattern was too thin and with it's brightness it left me unable to see anything under the beam. So I could either point it down a bit to see what was right in front of me or point it out to see where I was going. That was a fun ride. For my commute I don't use the integrated lights at all now and have gone back to the USB rechargeable lights from my other bike. The problem with this is that I can't see the display very well in the dark. Not a huge issue but still bothersome.

Having said all that I do think it is a wonderful bike to ride and I am looking forward to the Mission Control app so that I can get more granular on charge monitoring and power usage. I've ridden it 475kms so far this week and have another 45kms to go today :)

All you need is a extra charger at work and you can blast all the way on Turbo and keep the lights on.
Safety is super important and I suggest you keep the lights on at all times (bright, strobe/flashing lights during the daytime, powerful angled beam during the night).

Hi Ravi, sound advice and I have considered another charger but that's another $250 (CDN) over what I've already invested in it. If the bike is using up half the power on Eco mode, I doubt it would make it all the way in Turbo ;) As for safety, you need not worry, I've been commuting by bicycle for many years but was driving part way before. I always have lights on and hi-viz clothing :)

Here's my 900km update. Range has not increased as the battery has "broken in" so I'm getting a U1-604 battery for it which should get me the range I need. I dumped the stock saddle and put on my nicely broken in Brooks for posterior comfort as well. The last thing I've done is replaced the tires. The Triggers allegedly have puncture resistance but after 3 flats in 3 days I installed a set of Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires and airlock tubes. I'll provide another update when the new battery gets here :)

Hey all. I received my Vado 3.0 in NZ a week ago. Was set to 32km, but they took it to Specialized and upped it to 45km. Love it.

So far so good. Eagerly awaiting the app also.

Question, do the lights do more than just go? Thought I read on an earlier page they could strobe? If so, how please?

Can you please tell me how they set it at 45...

So I have changed my tyres on my Vado and gone down to a 37 which gives me a new diameter of 2.19m.
I am not sure what the wheel size was before but it would have been larger with the standard 47s so my speedo will now be over reading and lowering my assisted topspeed.
I know it's probably only about half a mph but I'm in the UK and limited to 15.5mph assisted so every little counts!
In the absense of the app (sigh) I took the bike into my dealer to have the wheel size changed and they told me that they are unable to do it. I phoned Specialized and they said the same thing.
I am annoyed and confused because I was under the impression that the dealers could do it not least becasue of this page on the german Specialized site that covers exactly that: https://translate.googleusercontent...ogramm&usg=ALkJrhjmpwGXUYc0b0NgpUh5gNj2_7VGdQ
I have never read about this problem before. Surely I am not the first person to change wheel diameter on one of these bikes?

I don't suppose those of you in places like SoCal will care about this but apparently Specialized now have a better fix for the water ingress into the display cradle issue than the "foil". I cycle mainly in Swansea Wales so naturally it is a big issue for me! I have never broken down mid ride yet but I have been unable to switch off after riding in the wet and unable to switch on the next day.
I contacted Specialized and they told me there was a new part available so I took the bike into my local dealer and they replaced the whole cradle under warranty last week.
I would post a picture but it really doesn't look any different to the old one. I haven't ridden in the rain since so no idea if it makes a difference but heres hoping...
