Art…Dvorak mentions the Chesapeake Bay as heavily impacted by climate change with salt water intrusion
Apparently the Susquehanna is the major river emptying into the Chesapeake Bay. There are two major branches that join near my home. One branch looks clean and lovely, b/c it's acidic from mine run off and the other looks murky from alkaline farm runoff. The two combine to make a short run of "normal" ph water.

I suspect that watching pharma advertisements makes people ill. That is good for their business. I shut that stuff OFF.
@VoltMan99, It is freezing here. I am headed down to get a steaming bowl of local crab claw chowder with SF sourdough. Then I get to work on a really cool and creative bike project to protect my cabin fever, pandemic sanity for the New Year.

I think yur right on; those pharm ads are designed to make us sick with malice of forethought.
It´s only a secondary consideration for most other ads. Sex is supposed to sell, & maybe it does,
but not as much as it once did thanks to porn.

Those Big Pharma ads used to be illegal and now they’re not. Doctors have told me they gum up health care needlessly. If you wonder why these greedy companies are all over the airways confusing people check campaign contributions. And while you’re at it see who voted against allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices. The VA IS allowed to negotiate which leaves me with just an $8 co-pay

Yes. Right along a bike path this morning.
When I was a kid I was an ecological disaster. I fished every fish out of a creek. It took years to recover. I would only use live natural baits with no sinker and a long stick as a pole so it looked natural.
Limit on brookies use to be 10 under 8¨ & 10 over. Before the beaver dams washed out that was no problem.
Secret weapon, worms from under a rotting log 18¨ up from a small split shot worked deep in the willows.
One day two bus loads of scouts showed up on Maroon crik with poles. I walked out with a limit as they
loaded up to leave. 2 buses, one kid had 3 fish, the rest got skunked.

"Dvorak comments that the ice sheet in Antarctica will be gone at the end of this century." I believe I read that Antarctica contains 70% of the worlds fresh water and if all that ice melts ocean levels will rise about 200'.

A few years ago I asked my Dr. for a prescription I could use to buy 88 pills from a Canadian Pharmacy. He misunderstood and sent the prescription to Walmart but then realized the mistake and gave me a printed version I could scan and email but forgot to cancel the Walmart version. Those 88 pills from Canada cost me $103 plus $10 shipping. Walmart was going to charge me $1145.00.

Would that be when I hit 43 MPH during my solstice ride, or earlier in the ride, when I rode my first rock garden at 64 years old on blood thinners? Or maybe it was in November, when I got smashed into the water by a bad wave and held underwater for 13 seconds... or was it when I came back and surfed the same break the next weekend? I think John and Art don't get out as much as they used to, but I believe that's because of age and health problems, not because they think the sky is falling. I haven't ridden in two weeks because we had 10 inches of rain.

<< I believe this is a conversation that never wins ... >>

No one 'wins' a conversation. I think you're referring to a debate, but any serious debate ended a long time ago. Why you are arguing a settled issue with some fictional image you have of your stereotypical opponent?

I suppose it's possible that we would enter an ice age hundreds of years from now. It's also possible that a solar flare might destroy the magnetosphere. But are you going to keep smoking just because you might die from a car accident before you get cancer?

Has anyone seen Don't Look Up? I was really reluctant to watch it, but enjoyed it way more than I expected. It wasn't just a sendup of MAGA brainlessness, it also featured a scorching satire of hypocritical liberal technocrats and virtue-signaling mainstream media foolishness.

The characters smash a lot of smashing things while WATCHING TV. Streaming is getting more toxic, but there are still some fun things to watch without advertising. Eventually, I will probably wind up paying college students to deliver films on USB drives to my house on bikes or horseback. Would love to dump Amazon, but that's a hard habit to quit.
For one I think it would depend on what you was on or in on your solstice ride? Not sure what you are referring to? Or if anything was directed towards you but I guess if the shoe fits? Must have felt some pressure?

Its more of a conversation than a debate... Now a conversation can turn into a debate but however you would like to Label it is fine with me.. semantics at the end of the day.. If you back up to the thread you will see its a mixture of all sorts of topics and then some...So ok .. What issue is settled? If you are referring to Climate change.. I thought science was never settled and it is certainly not.. and it is not even close to proven... again follow the money.. he who pays will get the results they are looking for.. its all subjective.. and they nit pick what they find and hide the stuff they dont agree with.. Its the way man works...Give a little (money) power? see what happens.. if you need some examples look at the world right now... over a virus with a 99.8% recovery? this is not warranted.. average death rate is 77 years old...National age of death in the USA pretty much... treatments that work but they keep trying the same stuff that doesnt... seems the point they want to make is that they are trying to get the average age of death lower.. Utter Pradesh... 200 mil treated with the horse drug and recovery and smashed the virus... Almost to zero after they handed some simple meds and vitamins to the city... Why isnt it reported? Power and money ... Tv is bad regardless of how you get it... social media is worse than cancer... it eats your brain and destroys everything in its path.

I work with young adults, and I would say 10-15% of my work is supporting them in making sensible decisions about crap meds. This is almost, though not quite, as dangerous a problem as substance abuse. While I am prohibited by law from discouraging the use of patent medicines (SSRIs & SNRIsa) I am allowed to provide education about them. I can also encourage them to report side effects promptly.

Fortunately, I'm working with college students, so I can just point them to some of the studies that claim the drugs work, as well as the studies that prove they are no better than placebo-- as well as stuff like RIAT's work on the reanalysis of Paxil Study #329, and encouraging them to do their own research (not on Reddit or TikTock.) The hard science and pre-med kids are usually outraged, as most folks are who have any background in research and writing.

Many of the psychiatrists are caught in a bind. Their job has been reduced to simply prescribing medication, and the good ones don't like it any more than I do. In the past few years, I've had the vague impression that they are relieved when I send them back to be re-evaluated and often tapered off the meds. For the moment, they are shielded from liability because these 'medications' are still considered part of the standard of care. Hope to see that change in my lifetime.

The most extreme situations are in hospital; I had one client have their Xanax removed with no taper, and Abilify dose was quadrupled. Again, I can't legally suggest changing medication. But there is no law against going to the nurse's station, noting the change in medications, and saying, "My client is now trembling uncontrollably and showing symptoms of tardive dyskinesia. What's the plan here?" Uh, I don't know, the psychiatrist isn't here right now.

"That's okay. I can wait."

And then I stand there with my arms folded. Might not work again, but at least it worked once. Client got off all medication, had a complete recovery, aced all their exams, and called me from southeast Asia to brag about their new job and learning to drive. Great kid.

Nothing was wrong with them except the medication. To be fair, I have seen SSRIs work well about two or three times in seven years of practice. I had one kid with severe TBI who did really well on Prozac, another now who might be benefiting, but with severe headaches, so there may be rare situations where they're helpful.

People are attracted to not removing things but to add just one little something more so they don't need to change. That is why taking a pill is more attractive than for example, having gratitude, giving up junk food, getting off the couch or giving up blame and anger.

"worms from under a rotting log" Yes, those are like fishing with dynamite. Supper wiggly, local and fresh. They must smell like previous meals to the fish. I would sometimes use a pebble for a weight or a little stick as a bobber. Bugs from the fields were also explosive. A grasshopper on the surface of the water cannot be resisted by fish. I wonder about stocked trout. Trout farms use Purina Fish Chow. Why not make a paste out of that with hooks molded inside and let them re-dry, when going for stocked ponds? It is what they grew up on, just like home cookin'.

While it's true that science is never settled, sometimes the circumstancal evidence is rather strong ... see my favorite chart around post 1077 ? in this thread. And enjoy the weather...

science is never settled
This is why people who look for a rock to hold onto do not look toward science. Self-refection, self-doubt, research, re-evaluation given new facts, do not appeal to those who wish to hold steadfast. And that is their weakness. Science has inherent humility. That is what makes it strong. Critical peer review of facts is ultimately stronger than achieving group consensus of belief. Growth requires change.

Hopefully, I´ll be gone by then. but my place will be 20 feet under. I suppose this will warrant ´another´
huge real estate bubble where everyone winds up underwater🥴

Bless you. It was such a struggle finding the right combination of psychiatrist and therapist for our daughter. Months of Zoom sessions, which predictably weren't very fruitful given that one of her primary triggers are Zoom meetings.

It was a minor miracle that my wife was finally able to find a cognitive behavioral therapist whom my daughter connected with and who had an opening(after 6 months). I get the feeling he doesn't put much stock in SSRIs either, but we appreciate that he and the psychiatrist are able to have a collaborative approach.

The scientific method is one of, generally, continual refinement. Science is ’strong’ because its properties are subject to rigid scrutiny and open criticism. Religion with its dogma is a far different animal, and I mention this because in recent years certain sects have taken their cudgels to science from public health to climate issues. It’s quite a drag on securing our continued existence

My stroke meds are $279/month with Medicare. I buy from a FDA source in India for $50 for 3 months. And it’s an FDA approved maker. Thieves in the USA!!!

It is precisely the same..."rigid", your own word choice gives it away .

Dogma : something held as an established opinion especially : a definite authoritative tenet
b: a code of such tenets pedagogical dogma

" Science is ’strong’ because its properties are subject to rigid scrutiny and open criticism" = rigid code of tenets

"certain sects have taken their cudgels to science from public health to climate issues.'

Climate issues discussion has been "following the science"? Both are about division, name calling, "othering" and hate. Demonstrated by the most famous of climate scientists. It's what they do.
A "denier" who is against nuclear is "not all bad" to the top people.

The "good" climate reporters have reported that streetlamps are melting from climate change. Beyond being stupid liars. Having what are religious delusions.
