Smartphone Hub: Bosch site says yes but bike shop says no

The ad copy on the Bosch site for the Smartphone Hub says it works with all 2020+ Bosch products. Bike shop told me it won’t work with my 2021 Performance Line Speed, and showed me a FAQ that says the same thing. What’s the disconnect here?

you really don't want it as a upgrade,

Sure, it's compatible. Offhand I can think of a couple Trek models that come with the Speed motor and SPH.

IIRC the Speed motor was not on the original compatibility list when the SPH was released. I think that had to do with it not being compliant for speed pedelecs in Europe for some reason.

I have the SPH and have mixed feelings about it. I think its software is pretty functional within its limitations as long as you can live with its quirks. The main benefits:
-fewer devices on your bar if you normally have your phone there for nav/music
-very simple interface.
-better HR sensor support than Kiox/Nyon
-seamless integration and auto uploading of rides to Strava or Komoot.

The biggest drawbacks are:
-you dont get the lock function you would with Kiox or Nyon on your gen4 drive unit
-the generic phone mount design is known to be weak and has broken for many people. I use silicon bands instead of the phone holder that lasted only a few weeks of commuting for me before it cracked.
- You don't get custom ride settings like Nyon
-missing some data that you can see in Nyon (motor power vs rider power for example).

Navigation is similarly limited between the different options.

Thanks will check out the Nyon. Main reason for wanting the SFH was decluttering since I also have Garmin Varia app. But I’m sure I can find someplace else for the phone. :)

I have cobi.bike through the smartphone hub on my Trek Allant 8s. At best, I tolerate the app. It has a lot of quirks, and as others have said, doesn't have a lot of functionality. For example, for routing, if you want anything other than a default direct route, one that ignores things like bike paths, you need to use Komoot, which has its own quirks (I do my route planning with ride with gps, save that route, upload it to komoot, then use komoot to get it to cobi.bike, believe it or not...). Then, at the end of the ride, you upload your ride to Strava. Yup, another app. Took me weeks to learn all this, because it's not in any official documentation. The best you can say is that the display pages are colorful.

I really wanted auto upload to strava on the nyon but nope. but the thing is since it ends a ride every time you pause for a few minutes you would not be able to record longer rides in one section.

Assuming the Nyon is as plug-and-play as the YouTube videos show? No flashing necessary by the LBS?

Not sure which YouTube video you saw, but a swap from Purion to Nyon will require running the new cables from handlebars to drive unit. The Kiox to Nyon swap just requires (1-2) screws removed on the back of each mount, and the (2) cables switched over onto the new mount.

After the physical swap, things are usually good to go, but a software update is always recommended as drastically different versions on different components could cause issues. It looks like you have a MY2021 eBike, so the update may not be totally necessary, but is still recommended as the system might have some minor quirks if the versions are different.

@BlackHand is correct on the compatibility topic- SPH and 28mph/45km systems are NOT compatible in EU due to different regulations, but are good to go in the States. The confusion stems from published compatibility specs that weren't regionally defined.

@William - Bosch Team, thanks for the reply! Yes, one of the videos I viewed included the fun of fishing new cables through the frame. :). I’m not opposed to giving my LBS business, but they are slammed right now and I’d prefer my bike not be in the shop for a week++ if it’s something I can do myself.

Can you please tell me what FW rev is considered reasonably up to date for the PLS, and if there’s a way I can see the drive FW version via the Purion? In addition to upgrading the display, I’d also like to make sure I have the 85Nm capability as well.

no you should nto run the wires yourself. and as you said you want a update. cant you schedule a time to have the bike worked on so you can get it back the same day? thats what I usually do

Well, if I can fish wires through a wall, or behind the trim of my car, I can probably manage the bike frame. :)

Also, in regards to the FW I just want to know how to see what I’ve already got to determine if I need to make a future trip to the LBS.

you have to drop the motor to change the wires.

Probably, but not necessarily.

Every bike is different. I did have to drop my motor, because the wire harness didnt quite clear the gap between the motor and frame.

After finishing I realized I might have been able to fish the cable down instead of up without having to remove as much hw. But I'm not planning on opening the bike back up to find out!
