I rode past this at speed, and for one split second it looked like a dead Tarantula in the road.

Extended yesterday's package drop-off into a short coast ride that took me to the bluff-top parking lot overlooking North Ponto Beach. Wasn't expecting to see the historic Oceanside Pier on fire.

The pier's 6.7 mi to the north here. The fire started earlier that afternoon in a vacant restaurant under renovation at the very end of the pier. It was finally put out this morning with the help of fireboat water cannons and helicopter water drops.

The city of Oceanside says Friday that a vacant restaurant and a food service structure are heavily damaged, but no further loss of the pier structure is expected.

Leaving tomorrow on a circuitous drive to Portland to see our daughter. May have a bike one day there. Will be on the lookout for roadside madness and share any good finds, but I'm not hopeful that I'll be able to top your discoveries.

bummer I coud give you a guided tour. though during covid it was a lot more colorful.

After Portland, we have 5 nights on the beach due west near Cloverdale. Anything we should take in there?
