Racks.

I have read many posts regarding racks for our fatties.
This is what I purchased. 500 capacity.

Modification (cut diagonal top bar) was as per picture to allow the tires to sit flat, finish with 1"x 1"plastic end caps to tidy up the look. Folds up when not in use. Mount bikes opp and use Velcro straps to each wheel on the non cut end and cinch straps to hold bikes upright. Folds when not in use. Less than $100.00 for 2 bike carrier.

Yes I enjoy reading all the great informative posts. It just seemed to.me folks were spending over 3-400 on racks. This works great and you do have some access to the rear of a SUV.

Could you add another picture that shows the rack with the bike installed? I really like your idea but I can't figure out how it works. Thank you.

I made one other mod. to the carrier. I used the anti rattle plate that comes with the carrier and the u bolt together with piece of 1/2" black gas pipe to keep the bikes upright. (Picture 1 and 3)

Second bike just goes on opposite to the way the first faces. Use tie downs of any thing you want to hold the wheel with the uncut bar to stop forward/backwards movement....I have ratcheting straps to keep the bikes in place. Over kill but I like to be safe with $2000 worth of bikes on the back of the RV

Thank you for posting these great pictures. I like your ingenuity. It looks like you've had a chance to use the rack; how is it holding up with the two bikes and going down the road?

It works great. However there is also one other caveat. Most 4" bumper tubes on RV's are thin walled and will not hold the weight. You will notice I have twin spares as well. I installed a new rear 4" square tube with 3 times the gauge of thickness, will now hold over 1000 lbs combined. It is called A500 TS4x4 and is approx 3/16 inch wall thickness. Cost about $30.00 for an 8' length at the local Metals warehouse. Needs to be cleaned and painted. That would be true no mater what carrier you mount to an RV rear tube. Had the situation years ago where a Yakima rack with 2 bikes bent the tube under load.......

Thanks for the quick reply and glad to hear it's working well! So your carrier is mounted to the bumper and not to a regular hitch attached to the frame?

Correct I did not have a hitch mount to the frame, just the bumper that I attached a hitch carrier to.
