Possiblity of attaching a bike trailer

Anyone had a chance to attach a bike trailer to ride 1up 700 Series. For example: Allen Sports Deluxe Steel Child Trailer.

Specifically I would like to know is it possible to safely attach a axle mount to ride 1up 700 Series

Thanks,
Sara

I can't speak to the 700 series in particular but I did find a thread on one of the e-bike forums that discusses how e-bikes are well suited for towing trailers. I would guess that with the power and battery capacity of the 700 series, it should be as good as any bike, though obviously your range will be reduced.

I would also guess that a hub motor bike such as the 700 series might be better suited for towing than a mid-mount motor, since you are not putting the extra stress on your chain and gearset. Of course the counterpoint is that you can use the gears to help the motor on a mid-motor bike.....but you'd still be beating up the drivetrain IMO.

We might be testing this theory this summer with a doggy trailer on our 700 series. Ugh.....not my idea......

I use one of those trailers on my old Diamond back mountain bike, and a typical skewer mount holds it fine, but that's a mid motor conversion. There's not the same force on the skewer/wheel like there is with a hub motor

Hub motor axles are rectangular, usually 12 x10 mm, while the hole in the trailer adapter is probably 10mm. So you would have to shape the hole in the above fitting to align properly, After doing that, you would find that the 12 mm washers used on your Ride-1up won't fit in the recessed hole. So you'll also have to cut a rectangular slot in a 10mm washer to fit in that recess.

Next each hub motor is different. Some would allow that bracket to sit flush against the frame, which is best. I think this is what the RIde-1up does, Others have a washer that fits into the axle first, so the bracket fitting would have to sit on top of the washer, Now you have a stack of metal parts with only the washers in contact, which is more prone to work the axle nut loose.

That's the big concern with a hub motor. You have to keep the axle nuts from working loose, or the motor will spin in the frame and destroy the mounting slots.

In summary, you will have enlarge the hole the bracket, and probably fiddle with a washer that fits in the recess. Then yiu have to assess whether it's going to be a safe arrangement. Will the bracket have enough metal afterwards. Will it stay on the axle,

My Burley trailer uses an adapter like this (Bike Trailer Steel Hitch 12.2MM Connector for Burley Trailers Replacement Trailer Part (90 degree) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07QKJS48D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_QiYpFbSWZRD0D

I use this currently on my Trail4 Cannondale MTB but intend to move it to my LMTD when it arrives. It has a 12.2 mm hole which should mount over the axel without issue.

When it comes to trailering with a bike I highly recommend "The Robert Axel Project".

They are THE definitive experts in how to attach trailers to bikes.

I also encourage all to watch their videos. Tremendously informational.

The OP originally posted this question in February so they probably already know but the photo posted above by @flipper answers the question. The Ride1Up 700 series uses a rear hub motor that means it does not use a thru-axle, instead it has a standard hub motor axle with the power wire coming out the right side, the left side has an axle nut that simply bolts onto the vertical drop-out's as shown in Court's photo of the left side of the rear axle here

This obviously isn't an Axle Mount, but the ones I made for mine and my wife's 700's work great.
I am building a Double Pup Trailer so our pups can ride together, as they get 'antsy' when apart.
I welded up attachments that bolts to our back racks that hooks up to the tow bars on the trailers, rather than
attaching the tow bar to our seat posts.

A couple of pictures of the 'rack mounts' that I made to pull the 'Pup Trailers' with.
The last picture explains why I decided to build a larger trailer........
The last two pics are of my Pup's Double Trailer and the Rear Rack mounts I welded up.
