Hi everyone.

My wife and I are in our 60s and want to get back into cycling after many years, but we just can't pull the hills anymore. I received my first Lectric XP Step-thru on Monday and pedaled around our hilly subdivision with ease, so I bought another for the Missus. Looking forward to spring so we can haul our foldable ebikes to the park. They supposedly only officially approve Class 1 bikes, and ours are Class 2. (I don't plan on doing the Class 3 upgrade on our bikes.) Hopefully they'll give two senior riders a pass to ride slowly on the bike paths.

We live south of Louisville, KY, and there is a miles-long loop around the city through parks and neighborhoods that we would love to cruise.

Welcome from a 70+ year old!

My wife and I still enjoy riding our bio-bikes but had to give them up on our local steep roads and trails. ebikes opened up the local routes for us once again as I'm sure it will for you as well.

Be sure to share your ebike adventures! We all like pictures...esp of ebikes on trails. 😎

Happy to be here. I like hobby communities that bring helpful folks together, and this looks like a great one. I'll be sure to post some eBike adventure pictures as practical -- some in 3D!

Welcome from just across the river. I get over to the Louisville river bike trail sometimes, wave if you see the bike left. I wear a helmet with yellow lettering & a yellow vest.

Welcome. You fit the EBR age demographic just fine, and there are lots of XP owners around.

Welcome Dan L Shane, when using your throttle, just pedal along and no one should even know it’s a cl2. If it became mandatory that you can’t operate a cl 2, you could disconnect it. Good luck and ride safe.

Thanks Big Al,

I never use the throttle at all -- just pedal assist.

I'm loving my XP, but I have to figure out a way of stabilizing my wife's bike while she mounts it. I'm think of replacing the kick stand with a stabilizing wheel if I can design one that would work. She's only 5-ft, and due to knee replacement she has real trouble even getting over the 18" high step-thru bar and getting the bike started. Hope I can make it work for her.

Might help her to mount from a curbside with the bike on the street level ?

Good idea, except we wouldn't be street riding and she needs to be able dismount on flat ground too. Actually, after some trial she really can't pump her legs effectively without losing some weight, so she'll be working on that first. She's got a few winter months to use her lateral pedaling trainer to get in shape. At least the new bike gives her an incentive.

Join the gym and kill it for 3 months . Plus diet . No more meat with the noodles : Loosing weight is tough > Bike riding is great for limbering up as well as Heart and lungs . For losing weight ??? NOT SO MUCH :
Can she walk ? Elliptical maybe or rowing machine . But it's mainly changing your eating habits .
Best of luck :) Don,t over do it either . Start slow . if she can drink 80 OZ of water everyday . Start with a goal of 1/2 that in 3 hours and in a week all 80 OZ in 3 hours . Eventually get it down to an hour or less. You'd be surprized how well that works . Learned that from a Guy are Mayo Clinic . They even published papers on it . The key is no more then 80 OZ in as short a time as possible

The water thing really works : Used it myself . Plus your body actually starts too crave the water and you don't get bloated like people think . I still do it everyday . 80 OZ in 20 minutes . Lost 50 pounds in less then 10 weeks . It also gives you energy you didn't know you had

Good tips, everybody! I bought the bikes to encourage staying active and flexible. I know the weight loss comes separately, and Kim is going to start paying more attention. It's been tough to do being shut in during the pandemic, though I've actually lost weight since I don't eat out and dislike sweets.

I sure appreciate everyone's encouragement. Hope to see you on the trail in the spring.

Mayo Clinic
Please. What Mayo tells us is contrary to your “guy”.
“If a person consumes 32 ounces of water at once, he or she is consuming about half the daily recommended amount of water. Doing this can result in hyponatremia.”

At once ? How long is at once ? Slugging 32 OZ At once ? Probably so

I'm not sure what happened to this thread, but it sure looks like /offtopic/ happened...

Folks are just trying to help a newbie, Art.

Anyway, I'm having fun with the XP ST when weather allows. I've learned that just folding down the handlebars is enough to fit both bikes in the back of my Ford Flex, so that makes loading easier.

I've also purchased a 750# capacity steel cargo carrier that attaches to my trailer hitch, and that gives me another transport option. Got my mirrors and bell installed and I'm ready for spring.
