Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

I don't use them on the bike, but I've gone through several pairs of the shokz bone conducting headphones running over the years. Early models weren't as sweat proof as they claimed and eventually failed at the charging connector.

I recently switched to the shokz openfit 2 over the ear buds and they do sound better. They charge wirelessly in their case, so they won't fail the same way. And, since they don't go in your ear, you can still hear traffic. There are a few other brands offering over the ear buds also now.

I think those that use ear buds or headsets are being selfish. Music is meant to be shared and enjoyed by everyone. We need more bikes like these:

Unfortunately, even portable bluetooth speakers get quite loud. I pass people "sharing" their music on the MUP all the time. And it's not just kids. A couple of weeks ago I passed an older guy around my age doing it.
I hope you know I was just kidding. I pass my share of "noisy" bikers and I don't care for it either.

No worries about it being stolen.
And I don't feed it by Bluetooth, I use the micro SD slot. This way no phone involvement/distraction. I like that it has 4 button control that's easily manipulated even with gloves on and no touch screen to interact with. The battery life is weak, but I keep it permanently plugged in to the display USB port. I've been using it for years now and though it can play loud, I keep it in the background so all other sounds are easily heard. And though the bone conducting ear pieces seem usable, I hate wearing things. Sound quality is more than adequate for some background music and nothing gets you more pumped than a good song and the sun on your face.
I love having music on a ride... The MUPS I ride at points runs parallel to a highway so it's enough that I don't have to listen to background road noise. And listening to nature is nice at times, but it also gets boring and at +15mph, you ain't hearing much anyway.

Give the over the ear buds a try. You don't even feel them and they allow you to hear background noise as well as the bone conducting headphones do. They don't go inside your ear, just sit over them and you listen to them like an external speaker. The quality of the sound is a step above the bone conducting headphones. They have a new pro version, but I am not sure what the differences are.

Also, I don't stream music. All of my music is stored locally on my phone (mp3's). My Garmin watch also has a subset of my music collection stored on it and can connect to a bluetooth headset. I don't like to carry a phone when I am running.

I'm sure they're far superior as far as sound quality... but again I really appreciate the easily manipulated buttons and no phone necessary.
I can easily pause, next song or change volume wearing gloves.
Then add wearing glasses is enough on my ears and having to charge yet another device is not a plus imo. Wearing anything when getting sweaty or when wearing winter head gear is also a negative imo.

Interesting option. My only complaint about the regular OpenRun headset (version 1) is the very limited playback control — nothing but pause and skip to next song.

Are the earbuds any better in that regard?

Skip is the only feature I really use the controls for. I think the number of control features is about the same. I am not sure what additional features you are looking for. There is also some kind of voice assistant that I haven't played with. My main goal when I got it was to get something more reliable as the Open Runs kept failing on me. I still have two Open Run Pros that work, but I haven't used them since I got the Openfit 2+. I like how they automatically connect to my phone when I pull them from the case and automatically disconnect when I put them back in. The case has a battery and can charge the buds. The case can be recharged by placing it on a wireless qi charger.

Physical Button Controls (On top of each earbud):
Play/Pause: Single-click either earbud.
Next Song: Double-click either earbud.
Previous Song: Triple-click either earbud.
Answer Call:
Single-click either earbud.
End Call: Click either earbud during the call.
Reject Call: Double-click either earbud.
Volume Up: Press and hold the right earbud button.
Volume Down: Press and hold the left earbud button.

Thanks for all the detail! We may use music a little differently in this context. I could really use [go back to the beginning] and [go back one song].

My original OpenRun (not the OpenRun 2) doesn't have these options. It interprets a triple click as either a single or a double click depending on who knows what. There's no going back.

Sounds like the OpenFit 2+ has some nice features. I'll consider it when my OpenRun dies.

I just got the OpenRun Pro 2 today. I can't compare them to the 1 and I'm still on the learning curve, but they do have the back feature. One song, not to the beginning.

So far, I think I'm going to like them. The customizable EQ feature is one thing I already felt the need to figure out. Shokz brags about the strong bass on these, justifiably, but I've never cared for overriding bass. The EQ feature let's one deal with that.

The ear hooks are a bit irritating. I hope that will pass. I do really like how secure they are on my head and that I can quit constantly push earbuds in my ears to keep them from falling out. At the same time, having open ears is a little weird. It's one of the reasons I wanted these, but it's going to take some getting used to.

Thanks, good to know for the day when my original OpenRun dies. Will have to test the OpenFit buds, but I like the way OpenRun headset fits me. Totally comfortable, and no way it's ever coming off by itself.

Also, only 1 object to keep track of. For a guy with an 11th degree black belt in losing things, that's important. I've left hats behind in 50 states.
