Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

They dont mean to harm people, they all think its fine and it wont happen to them.
Way too generous. They don't care about other people, period. In their minds, rules don't apply to them. They fancy themselves outlaws and wear full-face helmets for anonymity.

Just look at the reckless mass ride-outs they do, taking over busy public streets and bikeways with zero regard for other users. There's a whole YouTube subculture around this mentality.

And most could never afford these machines without parental funding.

Mob rule takes over in those rideouts, mob mentality is the scariest human tribal behaviour.
Ive seen perfectly rational, passive individuals turn into monsters in a mob.

Thats why I dislike crowds and , especially sporting events, in Europe they can turn nasty so quickly.

I do most of my riding on MUPs, rail trails in particular, there is a hierarchy when it comes to right of way. Horseback riders and dog-sleds are at the top, followed by pedestrians, cyclists, then motorized (ATVs, Motorcycles). The speed limit on the trails is 50kph, horses and dog-sleds included. On a 50k mid-week ride, I seldom encounter more than a dozen other trail users, mostly ATVs and other cyclists. I see a couple of horseback riders, but since I don't ride in the Winter months, I have yet to see any dog-sleds.

By and large, most trail users are respectful of others, with the motorized users slowing down when meeting someone on the trail.

She commuted to work and back on a regular bike. Details are scarce right now but I bet the kids parents are probably going to be sued. Kids shouldn't be allowed to ride ebikes on public ways. We all see them. They're nuts.
and agree! as I age I can see where a level of maturity starts, liberal parents are not helping.

Excellent outcome, well-written article for a change!

According to the sponsor, the proposed CA bill SB1167 will make it easier get charges like this to stick. It also puts the folks who sell these machines as legal ebikes at greater legal risk. About time.
I blame a lot of this on "Surron" and the like plus the "loopholes",the smug "loopholes" usually get shutdown, just because its not expressly forbidden does not make it right,I used to think 12 yrs and up were mature enough and responsible, now I have had an epiphany on these things( it took me long enough)

I've seen a "Heybike" commercial several times in the last few weeks demonstrating youth ripping around street. wheeling down the center of the road and lots more bad behavior. These weren't off road, they were on local city streets by youth demonstrating the bikes power and ability. The bike in question is an e-motorcycle, not an ebike but all these vehicles get lumped into one category "Ebike". This commercial paints a bad picture for the entire ebike community. I bet a lot of parents will buy this for their kids and call it an ebike and let them ride it unsupervised.
Heyike Villin, google it.

California is requring age verification or simply identification...for every possible internet connection, this is spreading around the globe and all the most stringent ebike laws will follow.
No, not that I am aware of. But agree generally that public surveillance is getting desperately out of hand-- license plate readers, authorities using long-range audio monitoring, court orders for disclosure of digital identification.

If I could time travel, I would go back and give the Luddites phasers

If you could time travel, Charge, I would definitely try to source those phasers for you. Pedaluma could probably rig some pretty formidable weapons using crap batteries he's removed from bikes he's refurbished and repurposing controllers... given his wrenching and electronic skills, we should find out what he needs to build a few handheld photon-bullet sidearms, at a minimum.

It is calm, resourceful, and outside-the-box thinking like this that will get us through the current crisis, however you define it.

I have a green laser the size of a magic marker that will light a match at 50 yards but have never used it. I almost wonder what would happen if it were pointed at a 2400 Wh Surron battery.
That is wild that the e-moto was pulled over in 2024 and the dad had to take a safety class then the 12-year-old crashed it and could have died. It is also wild that manufactures do not take down videos on how to remove the speed limiters. And they make it supper easy to do by providing a loop of wire to cut when no other wire on the entire bike has a loop. That is not an oversight. It shows intent.

Here is another thing about proving the loop of wire to cut the speed limiter. The warranty says that any modification voids the warranty and any liability. It is an insidious way to get off the hook.

It is generally mostly used mostly to point out stars and constellations by field educating science focused astronomers in the cloudless desert skies, like Death Valley. Although I don't use it, there is always an exception to prove a rule. I once cauterized a cut on my leg. I have heard that it will also take out unwanted observation, burning the CCD chips in surveillance cameras. Dress as a Yeti with arm extensions in the costume first, then zap the offending f-er good. A frog costume or rainbow unicorn works just as well. An unknown new white van monitoring in the neighborhood can zap the rear view mirrors from 50 meters. Defence, defence. As the cheerleaders say.

It's kind of true. California passed a law that will require all operating systems, including Linux and SteamOS, to capture age information for each account created on the computer and to implement an API to pass this age information to applications on the computer starting in 2027. This has resulted in at least one Linux distro, MidnightBSD, changing their license terms to prohibit use in California. Even Newsom has called for the law to be amended.
