IMG tag option missing?

Why is the IMG tag removed from the forum editor? Such a pain to have to type in IMG tags manually. I note you can hit ctrl+p comparing to the stock XF editor but I doubt 99.9% of users know the shortcut.

I was hoping the forum update last night might fix this but no dice. The lack of IMG button in the editor is particularly cumbersome on touchscreen where there is no keyboard shortcut and needing to type out [IMG][/IMG] hunting and pecking for characters on different soft keyboard screens.

Howdy @tomdav , thanks for your question!

Some time ago we removed some of the image embed options from the editor, with the purpose being to encourage people to attach images using the "Attach Files" feature at the bottom. After attaching an image that way you get a button that allows you to insert a thumbnail of it into the post.

We did this because a lot of people were adding some very large images and embedding them directly into their posts; this caused problems with threads loading slowly and the forum having poor performance for people on old computers or slow connections. We had good intentions here, but the results have been mixed; embedding images has been more frustrating for some, and many people have figured out how to go right on embedding full size images anyways.

Since then, Xenforo has made some big improvements to their forum software for things like lazy-loading images. I've also set up imagick on the server which automatically downscales huge images to a more reasonable size. Given that, as well as the feedback we've gotten from you and other members, I'm looking at re-enabling the missing editor features. I'll save this thread so that I can let you know once that is resolved :)

Ah, that makes sense. On my hiking forum I tweaked the software to thumbnail all images automatically (with medium size thumbs for optimal viewing). Makes a big difference in page loads when there are hundreds of images. I know XF has an image proxy option and you may be able to resize automatically (with add on). I don't think they've implemented lazy loading just yet...

Nice! What software do you use for your forum?

EDIT - I re-read your post on there and saw that you were in the process of switching over to XF. Sweet! I checked out your thread with a bunch of images and it is very well done

Thanks, still running phpbb2. Ended up giving up on the conversion to XF. Love XF but decided it was too much of an investment to re-write all the mods (like the auto thumbnail / justify). 5 years ago I might have justified pressing on and offering it as a custom XF mod but with trends in social media and overall decline of forums the payoff is not there.
