Hybrid? Roadbike? Hardtail?

LOL - I was thinking Netherlands due to the flat bit but figured it could be other countries as well.

I understand the reluctance to go with Rocky Mountain. Giant is a far bigger company and at far less risk of going under of not having support for the motor. If you're never going to ride black trails and are just going to stick to blue and green then the technical abilities of the Rocky are less important and given you are leaning towards Giant I would say go with them.

If you ever decide to ride Burnaby Mountain send me a note, I'd love to send my wife out on the trails with you. It might be a way to get her more comfortable riding trails and maybe one day she will ride with me and my son. As it is now, my son would complain endlessly about how boring trails with his mom would be. Anything she could ride he would whine incessantly that it's boring, not challenging, etc ….. So I can never go mountain biking with both of them. Either my son complains it's too easy or my wife gets mad that we take her on a trail that is far too advanced for her and she ends up walking.

Hi @smeer,

I can only advice you demo ride the Specialized Turbo Vado. One of the most torquey motors in the market, completely silent and the geometry of that e-bike is sporty :) The best fenders in the market and a quite good rack. You could probably ride your 18 km round trip in the Sport or maybe even Turbo mode, meaning minimal effort.

Moved from a flat country to Canada and I now live halfway up a mountain, everything here is quite steep.

OK, so let's get real. How much elevation are we talking? I live at the top of a 700' hill. I took my Rebel HT (400 wh battery) out for a ride the other day. On the way home I rode up "the hill". My battery went from 50% to 20%. Granted I was pooped from the ride earlier in the day but hills will suck battery if you are not putting in a bit of effort. If you have a long ride halfway up a mountain you may need every bit of a 700+ wh battery.

Thank you! Though that is one of the ugliest bikes I have seen haha! The eye wants something as well.

I agree, biktrix puts out some of the fugliest ebikes. But the suggestion was good to consider a bike with large battery to fit in your budget. Consider the Frey CC which is at the top of your budget.

I did ride it, but I wouldn't be able to take it on my local trail. Commuting would be 30% of use, playing on trails the other 70%, which is why I am leaning towards the HT.

good Looking bike .that yamaha .too bad it's limited in speed and has no throttle..

It is. While the YDX-Torq model with 27.5" wheels, 120mm fork, & Yamaha PW-X motor, is closer to the Giant Fathom E+ the OP has chosen, it's probably not worth the extra $700USD.

Also not available in Canada, where I am :)

Yeah, that's a pity, Yamaha e-bikes are lightweight with good motors and a great transferable warranty, not knocking Giant my favorite LBS is a Giant dealer and I appreciate their wider range of models.

to be fair that is an older model, the current bike looks like this

may not be prettiest because it doesnt need to be,theBiktrix along with the Frey CC are hill climbing Tigers compared to cute little kittens posted above!

Oh no doubt, not a little voice either. However, the cost be 2500$ more (for a $5000 FS + extra set of tires). That just isn't happening.
Once you get used to changing Tires . It goes really fast : Is there something difficult about Removing these stock tires : I've taken tires off Trek s
Yeah if I was a girl I would want that Liv Intrigue with that irridescent Mars Chameleon brown/purple finish...(-: View attachment 46700
You can make the change for a little more then what that Bike costs :)

Picked her up today and immediately took her on a ride from my mountain down to the ocean. It was so,so awesome! In general, I used level 1 or 2, but for the climbs 3 and some really steep ones on the way home 4 or 5 (there are some very, very steep hills). I've been to places today that I would maybe have never gone otherwise, and I did take it into the forrest right away as well.

I did 20km and it went down one bar right after my uphill ride home, so I am pretty happy about that. When I get in better shape I think I will be able to climb the steep hills in 3-4 max as well and thus extend the reach.

Also, in relation to the amount of calories burned; I burn the same on my e-bike and still working on those steep hills as I did when living in the Netherlands on simple single track. Jeesz now the days go longer I'll probably will go everyday!

This is the perfect solution to be able to still get out when you live in the mountains.

Also really, really enjoyed my experience at the Giant dealer. It was really the best server I ever had at a store.

We picked up our new Amiti last night. I added a few things and we did a 20 mile ride to the store and a brewery today. She really likes the way it rides, and keeps up well. It's very easy to ride. Needs a stem riser though, too much wrist and neck pain. The bike is great though, goes right up the hills.

Earlier today I did a 19 mile dirt loop on the mountain bike, so about 40 miles for me today. I'm tired. 😇

This is Los Angeles, in the distance, 45 miles away. Yes, every once in awhile we get clear air. We've lived here thirty years and I didn't know this trail up the hill was even here.

Congrats on the bike for your wife, that is great. I added a couple things as well but they weren't in yet and I didn't want to wait haha so I got the bare-bones bike, added pedals and grips and rack/fenders/ wheels for when I need it as a roadbike will come in the next week or so.

My shop was saying how because of the coronavirus, there is an 18 week delay coming up in the shipping of bikes.

Can't believe I can zip over to the ocean for fun now :)
