Hitch Mount Bike Rack

I have the Thule Easyfold and it works with two 60 # bikes. It is quite light and fits nicely into the car’s trunk. The only disadvantage is when the bikes are not in the rack it does not fold flush to the car. Without bikes attached it looks like an attached wheelchair.

I went with an aluminum Black Widow motor cycle rack for my fat tire. It only weighs 34 pounds and has a 400 lb capacity. I bought four six foot cam straps from Harbor Freight for ten bucks. My bike weighs 63 lbs and the ramp is long enough that loading is a breeze. It takes me less than five minutes to load the bike and strap it down and less than two minutes to unload. The ramp attaches to the rack for storage, but I usually just put it in the back of my SUV when I have room. I just returned from a 1000 mile trip and the bike stayed rock solid from start to finish. It may not be pretty, but I am all in for $160.00.

I have a Saris Superclamp EX 2 and I really like it. Easy to load & Unload and it work with bikes with fenders!
Bonus - Saris has amazing customer service.

With the rack (no bikes) completely folded up I can still access the hatch on my Honda Pilot. With bikes, it tilts down and I can still access my hatch. Gone are the days of having to move my bike rack out of the way to open my hatch.

I'm sorry but I don't see how that will work with the plastic fenders on the Aurora... Am I missing something?

Thanks, Joe

That is what I though when I was starting to look for racks too.

The front fender doesn't come out far enough so you can clamp the arm straight on the tire. The rear one will contact the fender so you have two options: 1- use the rear tire strap only with out the arm. You don't have to use the tire clamp. I've done this with my Quick-E and the bike holds just as stable with one arm on the front tire as it does with two. 2- you can use the rear clamp just don't push it down tight against the fender. I have a piece of firm foam that the LBS gave me to put between the fender and the tire and it works great. I find that it eases any worry about the back end shifting when it is cradled in the crook of the arm even without downward pressure.
I always use the front and rear tire straps regardless of the arm configuration on the bike.

I never thought about using one of the bar adapters for a step through. I've used them for hanging racks but I guess they would bridge that gap from the step through. I would use some type of filler for the gap around the jaw and the bike to prevent rubbing from movement & vibration. I think that the downward pressure on the bar with the tire clamps would hold it steady.

One of the guys from Evelo recommended using that bar with the Hollywood rack.. I like the idea.. I just like the wheel saddles on the Swagman better than the ones on the Hollywood..

We have been using the EasyFold for 4+ years now on our delivery trucks and they have held up the best.

Most ebike designed rack will do the job nicely but we have found that the Thule offers a lot of features that the other brands don't and are really the best quality, well-designed racks that work with pretty much any electric bicycle design. The small footprint when folded, ability to handle 1 1/4" & 2" receivers, easy transport wheels, ramp and more make this a nice option.

I purchased a Kuat rack in the past and the issue I had was it didn't work well for my urban bikes with fenders and not being easily swappable between vehicles due to different hitch sizes. Great rack but a little more limited.

We just find that the wheel lockdown design limits many bikes with fenders. If you ride MTN bikes then your options open up and then the brands listed above are great options.

hope this helps,

Will

Hi Will..

The only thing I don't like about the Easy Fold is that it doesn't fold up tight to the vehicle when not in use.. I guess everything is a compromise..

Thanks, Joe

Joe,

That's true but like anything, there is always a compromise. We haven't seen this as an issue but some may. Just need to be more aware when packing up or take the rack off and stow it in any trunk etc.... I guess.

Hello All,

I just ordered a Evelo Aurora and need help/suggestions on a bike rack.

So far I've looked at this Hollywood, this Overdrive, this Swagman, and this Thule.

Does anyone have any input on these racks?

Thanks, Joe

Joe, I have the prior version of this Saris Super Clamp 2and love it. It is rated for two eBikes. The only difference between the lastest
and the prior rack is the new tilts out....Great rack, great customer support and made in USA, Wisconsin
